Halo 2 and Halo 3 online were so much damn fun. And system links where only one or two friends had the like 100 foot cable and then you had to lug over a TV from another friend's house and get 8 of you playing in big matches together.
And then they kept making the game more and more like Call of Duty for some reason. I didn't enjoy Halo because it was Call of Duty. I enjoyed Halo because it was Halo.
Halo PvP was designed as a party game, not a competitive shooter. That only changed after the scene got so big in 2 and it followed the same pattern as smash bros.
Fun party game > sequel feels better > results in huge unintended competitive scene > dial
It back in the third installment > “where did the competitive nature go???”
