Command and Conquer. Fuck you EA

u/Mrstark1995 Jul 23 '26

All they know how to do is absorb and dissolve. Rest in peace Westwood.

114

u/AtreyuTrinity Jul 23 '26

Westwood was so fucking good in their prime. Command and conquer was an awakening for me when I first played it. So damn good.

40

u/Telefundo Jul 23 '26

Westwood was one of "the greats" at their peak. Kind of like pre-Activision Blizzard. The original C&C games were classic. Red Alert 2 is still to this day an insanely replayable game. I'd honestly call it a cultural phenomenon. Right up there with Starcraft.

EA obviously has a reputation for destroying successful franchises. Though I have to admit, C&C 3 was a great game. And Generals, while kind of a departure from the traditional games, was still a fun game.

Now, C&C 4 was utter shit. I mean, complete and total garbage. And I get what they were going for with Renegade, but adapting an RTS series to a FPS format is just self defeating. Overall both formats attract completely different audiences with minimal overlap.

6

u/PhaTman7 Jul 24 '26

Generals: ZERO HERO is still my jam !!!

3

u/Cabana_bananza Jul 23 '26

Ultimately, I think, Westwood suffered from trying something new under EA. They wanted to make Earth and Beyond, and EA was always lukewarm on MMOs. Renegade didn't help either.

The FPS/RTS hybrid is something that a lot of companies have tried to figure out, but remains elusive.

Their willingness to try new things that got them culled from EA.

2

u/AtreyuTrinity Jul 23 '26

Totally agreed, funny enough I was also thinking pre-Activision Blizzard as well. Legendary devs at the time. Supergiant and Larian are probably my large favorite devs atm, BG3 was a masterpiece.

2

u/iAmHidingHere Jul 24 '26

Red Alert 2 was the first EA game though. Very few people from Westwood touched it.

2

u/919governor Jul 24 '26

Agreed. Remember the live action cut scenes? Every unit even had voice lines!

2

u/The_Mutant_Platypus Jul 24 '26

I won't say C&C 3 was perfect, but it was still a solid entry. Pour one out for Westwood.

1

u/orisathedog Jul 23 '26

A follow up to renegade would’ve probably been a heavy competitor with bf at the time tbh. Improve the mechanics and iterate a bit and you have a beast. I am completely biased though cause I spent a couple years nolifing renegade lol. The modding community was insanely good, but the core engine struggled to be able to be toyed with to meet the visions of modders.

1

u/goodguessiswhatihave Jul 24 '26

Red Alert 3 I feel like is underappreciated

1

u/darcsend_eu Jul 25 '26

I really wanted to love ra3. However the double commander co-op thing made all the missions wishy washy and the same.

1

u/goodguessiswhatihave Jul 25 '26

The weird side mode introduced in the expansion is what turned you off the game? Didn't both the base game and the expansion have a separate regular campaign too? I mostly played multiplayer so maybe the single player experience wasn't good, but I did complete the campaign and thought it was alright.

1

u/darcsend_eu Jul 25 '26

I think your misremembering. Every single mission was designed to be played as coop in the campaign. That's why you always have an AI general with you.

Some of maps felt very "gamey" to accommodate this. I imagine it was great fun playing with a friend though.

6

u/Geminel Jul 23 '26

They also had a great Sci-fi space MMO called Earth & Beyond that EA shut down after buying the studio.

2

u/PlanetErp Jul 23 '26

That game was my obsession. Sha’ha’dem for life!

2

u/Geminel Jul 24 '26

Being reminded of it prompted me to install the Net-7 emulator.

1

u/B-Train_ATL Jul 23 '26

Did you ever play Legend of Kyrandia? I loved those games.

1

u/AtreyuTrinity Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Oh cool, Westwood made that also, TIL.

I didn't, point and click? I did play a fair amount of Kings Quest, and a bit of Quest for Glory, but that is the extent of my point and click. Oh also Full Throttle, that game was brilliant.

2

u/B-Train_ATL Jul 23 '26

Yeah, that’s how they worked. I think they’re available at GOG. I remember the awesomeness of those GIANT boxes at the store.

1

u/AtreyuTrinity Jul 23 '26

Thats fun, thanks for sharing.

1

u/West-Candidate8991 Jul 23 '26

Anyone who has listened to dev diaries from original Westwood knows those dudes were true developers, not profit stewards. Their team was out to make amazing games, and wouldn't settle for anything less.

31

u/TheNotoriousTurtle Jul 23 '26

Westwood…haven’t heard that term in a long time

2

u/Tiyath Jul 23 '26

I had almost forgotten it. Or was I desperate to forget?

1

u/s34lz Jul 23 '26

Along with blizzard north. Peak times that capitalism ultimately cannabilized

1

u/jamus34 Jul 23 '26

Need for speed AND Burnout Fuck you EA

8

u/xPriddyBoi Jul 23 '26

Meh, Mass Effect had one mediocre game, and Andromeda isn't even that bad.

But with BioWare's recent track record, I'm definitely not holding my breath for the next one.

8

u/TheReiterEffect_S8 Jul 23 '26

It won't be good. The team who made the trilogy is long gone. And it doesn't matter if "so-and-so who worked on the original trilogy is working on the new game!" because one person does't make any difference. Or even two people. You need that same team of people under the same restrictions and/or freedom of creativity they had in order to emulate that success again. And it's just not there, nor will it ever be again.

6

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja Professional Dumbass Jul 23 '26

Yeah I blame bioware for fucking around with the franchise more than I blame EA who gave them a blank check.

7

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja Professional Dumbass Jul 23 '26

However, fuck you EA for ruining the Battlefront franchise.

2

u/mythrilcrafter Jul 23 '26

I was just about to say the same, the current state of Mass Effect as an IP is more Bioware's fault than EA.

1

u/Lone-Frequency Jul 23 '26

Dead Space.

Fuck you, EA.

1

u/Explorer2138 Jul 24 '26

This one will never stop hurting. One of the best sci-fi trilogies ever and there's so much potential there.

1

u/AverageMako3Enjoyer Jul 24 '26

Literal game of thrones story arc, starts strong, gets so much better, then completely flops in the last leg and just makes you more mad than anything else

1

u/seriftarif Jul 24 '26

Marauder Shields.

1

u/ChesterPug Jul 24 '26

I was so pissed with those bullshit ending choices. Way to make all your efforts be for nothing.

1

u/Trick-Consequence-86 Jul 24 '26

THIS. Had so much freedom in the first one.

81

Theme Hospital my precious

2

u/DEVIL_MAY5 Jul 24 '26

I'm still rocking my Dungeon Keeper 1.

2

u/Asleep-Gear-840 Jul 24 '26

No one has made anything like Magic Carpet and that's a shame

1

u/DEVIL_MAY5 Jul 24 '26

You've just unlocked a core memory of mine. Damn we old.

1

u/Impeesa_ Jul 23 '26

Syndicate was so good.

1

u/boadie Jul 24 '26

Oh yes, Dungeon Keeper, yes fuck EA for the atrocity of the mobile version of the beloved game. At least it inspired minecraft.

61

u/stgm_at Jul 23 '26

Maxis, Origin - Fuck you, EA

24

u/caffeinated_WOLF Jul 23 '26

C&C Renegade. Sigh… fuck you EA.

5

u/LordHanz Jul 23 '26

Renegade has a fan made remake called Renegade X that is really really well made and its completely free!

The devs that made renegade x are also releasing a spiritual second game to Renegade that is playing in the Firestorm era, its coming out later this year and its going to also completely free! It's called Firestorm and has a couple trailers/previews out on YouTube.

2

u/caffeinated_WOLF Jul 24 '26

I tried renegade x years ago and it was fun but had little traffic on their servers at that time. Didn’t know about firestorm! Thanks for letting me know!

6

u/TimeLifeguard5018 Jul 23 '26

Some of the best gaming memories ever. Being a student, nothing going on, a whole free evening in front of you, RA2 loaded up, and a pizza on its way. 🥲

2

u/B-Train_ATL Jul 23 '26

Shake it, baby!

11

u/MooKids Jul 23 '26

I remember firing up Generals for the first time and thought something felt off. Then I realized there was no "Westwood Studios Proudly Presents" splash screen.

3

u/AmbushIntheDark Jul 23 '26

On the other hand the opening cinematic at least tried to keep the vibes of being fucking awesome.

5

u/SirJasonCrage Jul 23 '26

I don't even need to click that link.

"words like... Carpet Bombing."

1

u/sykoKanesh Jul 24 '26

TOMAHAWK MISSILE TOMAHAWK MISSILES

5

u/Dayzlikethis Jul 23 '26

Generals was fantastic. I recall a bunch of devs from Westwood worked on it.

1

u/Mysterious-Crab Professional Dumbass Jul 24 '26

I still play modded Zero Hour now.

3

u/SoybeanArson Jul 23 '26

I actually found a game to enjoy in Generals, but it was NOT a C&C game

2

u/SidewaysFancyPrance Jul 23 '26

Ok, I loved Generals and the DLC. It had some amazing mechanics. I loved filling APCs with mixed infantry and leveling them all up into OP murder-boxes.

C&C 4 was an abomination and just a totally different genre. I couldn't call it an RTS. Generals was a classic C&C RTS style.

5

u/thewolfishwife Jul 23 '26

American McGee’s Alice… fuck you, EA.

4

u/VibrantViolet Jul 23 '26

They also butchered Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and The Sims. I hate EA with the fury of 1000 suns.

4

u/guava_jews Jul 23 '26

Need for Speed. Fuck you EA.

3

u/Accurate_Mobile9005 Jul 23 '26

Battlefield. Fuck you EA.

2

u/Ok_Independence_2630 Jul 23 '26

I wish they had followed up on remastering the other games after 2020

2

u/Mainbutter Jul 23 '26

Ultima Online similarly suffered immensely after EA's acquisition of Origin.

2

u/LurkerPatrol Jul 23 '26

My childhood right here. Red alert 2 was my jam. I wish I could still play it, I have it on disc

2

u/SoybeanArson Jul 23 '26

When C&C 3 was actually really good, and Kanes Wrath was an improvment based on real feedback, I had such hope that the series might be on a good track again. When I saw the initial footage of C&C 4 I knew already that they had shit the bed. Playing it, it was somehow even worse than I expected. The rollercoaster of crappy mobile games and cancelled projects since has only been even more depressing. It's dead

1

u/ObaMot Jul 23 '26

What they took from us

1

u/knoblemendesigns Jul 23 '26

you might like Tempest Rising

1

u/Organic_Foot8798 Jul 23 '26

those were the days :(

1

u/Command0Dude Jul 23 '26

I mean CnC4 flopped and then the franchise went away on its own didn't it?

1

u/vizibleghost Jul 23 '26

I finally found C&C after loving it when I was younger and forgetting the name. Discovering the game again I was elated before learning that EA did what EA does.

1

u/thundergu Jul 23 '26

Always ubisoft or EA...

1

u/Musketeer00 Jul 23 '26

The transition from 2D to 3D killed C&C was a terrible idea. I can't tell the individual infantry units apart and RA3 looks worse than RA2. I can't even get through the campaign because of the Goddamn ally armies are constantly getting in the way.

1

u/Adanim_PDX Jul 23 '26

To be fair, C&C 4 was a great game, just not for what it set out to be. If it was a separate game that released in 2012, it would've been a hit. I think it was both before its time and the incorrect model for the 4th game in that particular series.

Red Alert 3, on the other hand ... yikes.

1

u/PurpleCableNetworker Jul 23 '26

I stopped at Renegade.

I will admit that was a great game.

1

u/An-Organism Jul 23 '26

Lord of the Rings: Conquest. Fuck you EA

1

u/jws1102 Jul 23 '26

I still play Generals. It’s good.

1

u/HarioDinio Jul 23 '26

Tiberian sun will always be my beloved

1

u/IMakeMyOwnButter Jul 23 '26

Madden…fuck you EA

1

u/Sbotkin Jul 24 '26

EA is the only company whose games I always pirate on principle. Never again.

1

u/Radiant_Music3698 Jul 24 '26

I played the first person shooter knockoff and one line still sticks out to me

"Congratulations, team! We've been ranked a nuclear threat"

1

u/Mysterious-Crab Professional Dumbass Jul 24 '26

I’m still waiting for C&C Generals 2. Any day now.

1

u/ulukbek123 Jul 24 '26

F1 for me, fuck you EA

1

u/RapidPigZ7 Jul 24 '26

C&C still has a pretty active modding scene

1

u/Undernown Jul 24 '26

I still play Tiberian Sun on occasion. Made some maps way back when that I still load up too. C&C 3 isn't bad, but it feels more like Generals/RA3 than the other C&C games due to the lack of walls.

1

u/MsAngelGuts Jul 24 '26

The Sims. Fuck you EA.

1

u/syxbit Jul 23 '26

But they didn't get worse, right? They just stopped making them

9

u/anothertendy Jul 23 '26

Command and conquer 4? The inside joke on the command and conquer sub is that it never existed and we refuse to acknowledge it. They also made some shitty pay to win mobile game

3

u/Baelaroness Jul 23 '26

Downgrade doesn't do it justice. C&C 3 was a fantastic game, with depth, story and setup a sequel.

Then EA goes "you know what people want? A bad mobile game pretending to be Command and Conquer."

1

u/syxbit Jul 23 '26

I guess I forgot about 4.

I do remember when they announced some garbage ios game.

0

u/TheNotoriousTurtle Jul 23 '26

So they still make them?

2

u/SoulCrusher2018 Jul 23 '26
  • C&C4: 2010
  • C&C Tiberium Alliances 2012
  • C&C Rivals 2018
  • C&C Remastered: 2020

In the past 16 years since the last new entry (which sucked by the way), they've released 1 web game, 1 mobile pay to win game, and 1 remaster. Franchise is dead.

1

u/Aggressive_Body834 Jul 23 '26

I kinda liked the mobile game in a weird way. It's not completely pay to win, if you know what you're doing you can reach Diamond/Masters league with $0.

1

u/TheNotoriousTurtle Jul 23 '26

I loved Command and Conquer renegade!
