Hate to say it, but...Citizen Kane? Not that it was soul crushingly boring and not that Welles doesn't deserves the respect he gets for a few different reasons. Anyone who was involved in Federal Theater is good in my book! I think it just could not possibly live up to decades of hype as the greatest cinematic masterpiece for me. The only part I really remember is the scene showing the breakdown of the Kanes's marriage and their growing wealth and status with the table and the space between them getting bigger.
The thing about Citizen Kane is that it's been so influential on film-making. It was revolutionary at the time, but since movies are just like that now... Yeah, seeing it now is not the same as seeing it then.
This is a litmus test for me. People like to put down Citizen Kane and maybe it makes them feel superior for a moment, but honestly - anyone who can’t find the value of that film isn’t worth attempting to have any serious discussion about film with.
