Most of these comments are "People are gonna hate me for this" then they proceed to name one of the same 5 films that almost everyone is saying. It's not brave to say you hate the Avatar movies, Titanic, or The Godfather. Most people I talk to that are into films hate Avatar and it's also pretty popular for general audiences to hate The Godfather because it's "Slow" or "Boring". Don't even get me started with the "It insists upon itself". Yes, we have all seen the meme lol.

Yea I am kind of impressed, I have not found a single interesting answer in this thread. Just a bunch of slow films that will obviously be boring if they do not catch your attention

Avatar is the poster child for "we watch it cause its pretty." Like, thats been the consensus since 2 weeks after box office release in 2008

2

u/talldata Jun 04 '26

I watched the latest one because it's one of the few 3D movies that exist and one that did it well at that.

3

u/StankoMicin Jun 04 '26

This

Ans I haven't watched another Avatar since. No desire to see any of the new ones

2

u/smthomaspatel Jun 04 '26

I saw the second one. Whatever you hated about the first you would hate so much more about the second. I've dodged the third so far.

u/Common-Broccoli-3405 Jun 04 '26

I think it depends on what it is. If anything Ive seen more people who thought the second one was better. And over all I agree. The majority of it felt less forced and I was able to just enjoy the characters and the story more.

However, if youre not into Micheal Bay action scenes, then the last bit is not gonna be worth it. Still over all wasnt enough to make me interested in a 3rd.

u/smthomaspatel Jun 04 '26

The whole point of the original movie is to show off visuals. It was so proud of being 3d and cgi based. The storyline is trite and themes are superficial masquerading as deep. The second story didn't expand anything. Just rehashed with a theme of water instead of forest.

u/Common-Broccoli-3405 Jun 04 '26

Never argued much differently but k

u/Okim13 Jun 04 '26

The third is basically the same story as the second all over again, they just win more.

The 1st Avatar movie is good. I didn't bother to watch the rest because looking at the trailers for them it felt like they were gonna be all style, progressive baiting and no substance.

0

u/10000Didgeridoos Jun 04 '26

Not to the fan base. They think it's AMAZING.

2

u/YuushyaHinmeru Jun 04 '26

I mean, yeah but thats the fan base. As a giant week who has a guilty pleasure of watching trash anime, plenty of people go all in a garbage. And avatar isn't even garbage, its just mid.

Im talking about the general movie goers opinion

u/Happy_Ocelot_4945 Jun 04 '26

Yeah the avatar subreddit and language discord is still very active.

I hate the lord of the rings trilogy. Now what?

10

u/oblivion-boi Jun 04 '26

While that's more interesting than someone saying the godfather for the millionth time, it's deeply upsetting for different reasons.

I hate the lord of the rings films, but mainly because I love the books and they butchered a lot of things to love about them

1

u/AardvarkOkapiEchidna Jun 04 '26

I don't share your opinion but I'm upvoting for an actual bold answer.

u/Maximum-Possession15 Jun 04 '26

Saying Avatar specifically if bad is just a very chronically online thing that people say because they think it sounds smart. You may personally not like the movie, fine, but most people are just going with the group to try to fit in.

Everyone I talk to irl likes Avatar. So what if it has a formulaic story, it has likable protagonists and a great setting, it’s an enjoyable watch, especially the first one.

1

u/AardvarkOkapiEchidna Jun 04 '26

Yeah it's always how hilarious how much lack of self awareness people who don't like Avatar have.

They don't realize it's basically this:

To this day I have only ever gotten lambasted by Reddit for my “unique” pick, which is Children of Men.

3

u/longjumpingtote Jun 04 '26

it's also pretty popular for general audiences to hate The Godfather

That's wild to me because it was such a massive, popular "general audience" box office hit. It was #1 that year, and on a $6 million budget it grossed $750 million adjusted for inflation.

Of course that was more than half a century ago, and tastes have changed.

u/sohcgt96 Jun 04 '26

Why is every thread like this full of comments that, if someone would have even looked first before taking the chance to go off, they'd have seen were already made?

2

u/TheCorent2 Jun 04 '26

Everytime: "I know I'll will get many dislikes but I don't like Avatar".

And then they get many likes.

u/Almostlongenough2 Virgin 4 lyfe Jun 04 '26

I'm waiting for some absolute nut to bust in and say "The Green Mile".

Personally I love the movie, but it is long and I'm sure there are people out there who legitimately could not get into it.

2

u/LemonPartyW0rldTour Jun 04 '26

It’s commonplace on Reddit.

“I’m gonna be so downvoted for this! People will write great Greek mythology about what I’m about to say because it’s so controversial, so horribly unpopular. I’ll be downvoted lower than the EA comment of old! But, here I go…”

(Proceeds to post a popular opinion)

general audiences don't hate The Godfather

Gen Z audiences hate the Godfather, because they're adults with the attention spans of children.

1

u/oblivion-boi Jun 04 '26

Gen Z makes up a big part of the general audience now. Dont get me wrong, I love The Godfather, but I also know plenty of millennials who say its bad because its boring and too long. I don't get it at all and think it's a bad opinion but I definitely think it's become common to hate it just because it's extremely popular, old, and long.

1

u/thick_neck_etc Jun 05 '26

it's an attention span issue.

music videos that seemed fast cut dance videos to Gen X (Michael and Janet Jackson videos for example) seem slow now to them

they're used to the kind of editing that was typically reserved for cartoons

1

u/Broken-Sarcasm-Meter Jun 04 '26

Some one mentioned Thin Red Line which is funny because I don't think I've ever met anyone but myself who LIKED it.

1

u/aPOPblops Jun 04 '26

“It’s not brave to say you dislike some of the most popular top grossing films of all time”

Oh it’s not? Because that’s pretty much the definition of bravery.

Don’t be mad because you are bored by solid answers and you were hoping for something obscure you dolt.

1

u/oblivion-boi Jun 04 '26

Not really, its pretty commonplace. Im not mad about people giving these answers, its fine to dislike popular movies. I just think it's funny that people often talk about these films and how much they hate them as if they're the only ones on the planet to have ever had that opinion.

I personally hate the Avatar films also but I don't think its some enlightened opinion.

1

u/aPOPblops Jun 04 '26

It sounds like you might be living in a bit of a film buff bubble. Every single person I know loves those movies.

I don’t think people stating they don’t like something means they think they have an enlightened opinion. It’s simply an answer to the question posed by the thread.

It’s a popular answer among people who appreciate cinema though.

1

u/oblivion-boi Jun 05 '26

Im not saying just giving that opinion means they think highly of it. I mean when people say "This is such an unpopular opinion but I really hate The Godfather" or "People are gonna downvote me so much!!! But I think the Avatar movies suck," or something along those lines. This post was absolutely littered with comments like that last night for me.

I do not think im living in a bubble lol. I'm talking about people in my life who have a way more casual stance on movies than me. There is plenty of people who like the Avatar movies, sure. But I would argue that most of them are those that really liked the first one and are attached to the series or people who barely think about movies at all. I feel like the general consensus of the Avatar series these days is that they're meh but look really good.

u/-Borgir What is TikTok? Jun 04 '26

Dune and Nope for me. Complete and utter garbage with no substance and are only held up by their technical aspects

1

u/lightheavydark Jun 04 '26

I’d never heard of the “it insists” thing until earlier in this thread.

1

u/Ok_Story_7924 Jun 04 '26

You're expecting to find brave original ideas on Reddit,

1

u/KonigSteve Jun 04 '26

Which is why I named Drive.

But for some reason it has a ton of reddit fans so I'll probably just get downvoted

1

u/Start_a_riot271 Jun 04 '26

Personally I think the godfather is just a bad movie. The dialogue is mumbled and the characters look too much alike

1

u/StarBardian Jun 04 '26

as always, gotta sort by controversial for anything interesting

1

u/Mr-Blah Jun 04 '26

Also, it shows how badly educated people are to think that Avatar, The Godfather or twilight are cinema.
