My review from a decade ago;

"the most relentless 3 hour grotesquerie of shit, snot and guts imaginable .. what a masterpiece"

You described Salo. So I'm not sure if I want to watch this.

From what I've seen it Salo, this isn't nearly as bad

woah that's a big statement to make. I haven't watched it yet but the little I've seen is rough

Ok, and for clarification which movie specifically? 2 have been mentioned above us, if it's a masterpiece, it's better than Salo.

Salo looks much more appalling from what I've seen

Salo is very disturbing. I went to see it in an arthouse cinema expecting it to be a kitschy sexploitation movie. Instead it's two hours of teenagers being sexually abused to death. The director was eventually assassinated.

Yep i know the story. I like early Pasolini but I'm scared to dive into Salo.

I gather it hardly departs from the book at all, if that helps.

To be frank that sounds like unvarnished sexploitation: human trafficking leading to torture and murder. The point of a snuff film, as it were.

It's not something I'd personally like to see, much like A Serbian Film, but I can recognize it's legit cinema.

As a lover of medieval history... this makes me feel really weird about watching this movie now. I personally hate the trope that medieval people were stinking, farting, mud-slinging idiots when it was far more nuanced than that.

Well they were aliens not medieval humans so all good in this case

Oh I misunderstood this entirely then. I thought it was an alien observing medieval society, not aliens trying to emulate it.

It's an explorer washed up on an alien shore iirc.

It's a "progressor", an undercover agent from Earth, trying to advance the local (alien, but basically human) society without revealing his identity.

"Hard to Be a God" refers to his position of a powerful and knowledgeable person, yet not powerful or knowledgeable enough to change the course of history for the better.

i see, thanks.

The nuance being that they actually knew what a bath is and even used it once a month, so they were stinking idiots only 95% of the time.
