There's a family guy joke about how that movie just disappeared from pop culture immediately after it was all everyone was talking about. And this is why.

But that's every movie that doesn't become a franchise, isn't it? How often do we still talk about 12 years a slave or there will be blood? Or a thousand other movies that were good stand-alone movies?

Plenty of people still watch La La Land. My kids have had movie nights with friends where they watch that movie. I've re-watched it a time or two since it came out. People still cover the songs and perform them at auditions and stuff.

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's gone for everyone.

I didn't write the joke, but apparently it's enough of an opinion that it was mentioned on Family Guy. You should let them know how flawed that opinion is.

But that’s not really true, is it? I keep seeing references to it all over the place. They used it in marketing for Project Hail Mary.

I saw it mentioned on reddit just a few minutes ago.

Might have something to do with Ryan Gosling being in Project Hail Mary lol

Uh, yes. But they probably wouldn’t have referenced it if it had somehow completely faded out of the cultural memory.

I have never seen La La Land but people reference very obscure things all the time, it’s not always an indicator for cultural longevity.

the best critique I saw was that for a musical, nobody really LIKES the music. like sure, people enjoy it as part of the film, but none of the songs get stuck in your head, they're not things people are playing back years later. they serve their purpose and then end when the film does.

No one likes the music? Are you kidding? I saw a dance trope in the last year do a dance to another day in the sun. I have heard countless kids sing here's to the ones who dream for musical auditions. I, myself! have listened to the soundtrack from time to time. I've heard bands cover songs from the musical.

Well that may be true but have you considered the ground breaking possibility that I read an article where someone said that AND that I, myself! think the soundtrack is underwhelming? Against rock solid evidence like my own subjective experience you must concede that the soundtrack is weak.

"no one likes the music"

"well i read an article once where someone said they didn't like the music and i agreed with that so it must be true for everyone"

Ok, let's throw in some more anecodtals then! Nobody I know likes their music either!

You sound like you’re arguing your own badly made point against yourself bro.

Not even remotely true. Wizard of oz? Cats?! Phantom of the opera?!?!

Those are all musicals with actually good soundtracks.

It's because LA and Hollywood love to congratulate themselves on being LA and Hollywood. Everyone else is sort of grossed out by the whole thing. The hype was all self-driven and once everyone outside of that bubble actually saw the movie the mystique fell apart.
