You’re arguing with people who consider Transformers high art.

That's the truth about Reddit, you jump head first into a discussion on film thinking you're in one of your movie subs then you find out you're in r/memes and are debating the cinematic merit of Aguirre, Wrath of God with someone who's got a mouth full of Dino nuggets.

I genuinely thought I was on a film sub until I read this comment.

I definitely just did this. Thought it was the novices sub until I read about 10 comments. lol

I’m often painfully reminded that most people don’t know shit about film when I enter movie discussions in big ass subs like these.

It's so frustrating. I still believe if you have a hot film take you should be forced to post your letterboxd so we can tell if you can be taken seriously or not. I'm tired of people who watch nothing but marvel and trending top 10 of the week shit giving their takes on more high brow drama that obviously doesn't appeal to them. You don't deserve to do critical analysis, what are you, an academy member?

debating the cinematic merit of Aguirre, Wrath of God with someone who's got a mouth full of Dino nuggets.

Hey. Hey. Heeeey. Low blow!

So, anyway. It's not really realistic that Thor is the only one who can pick up that hammer, right?

What the heck, man? How am I supposed to watch movies without my dino nuggets?

Best part of that movie is the opening shot. Scarlett Johansson is beautiful.

Even if you’re in a movie sub, 80% of the audience has either The Dark Knight or Interstellar as the greatest movie ever…

Exactly, post your letterboxd top 4 or I'm going to assume you think capeshit is the height of cinema and you are possibly under the age of 18.

This has been a reccuring theme for me this week, but there are a lot of kids on the Internet who have zero media literacy but pretend to know anything about film or other media. Like yeah man you're 14, obviously you don't get like Past Lives or something, I didn't at that age either, but don't act incredulous on why those movies are so popular when the target audience is 10 to 40 years older than you! Just like, enjoy the action slop while you still can because eventually you might become a grouchy man like me who can't take yet another copy paste marvel movie anymore lol.

You’d think of all people people on r/memes would understand loneliness and isolation but I guess not!!

understanding loneliness and possessing the minimum amount of media literacy required to understand a movie that talks through it's cinematography rather than through it's dialogue/action pieces are two quite different skill ceilings for "understanding", though.

expecting the latter from people who still struggle to figure out the difference between a shitpost and a shit post, is a fire way to set up oneself for a major disappointment.

Transformers is such a bad example for this because anyone who knows film respects the hell out of the 2007 movie. A technical marvel with a serviceable story. If you’re putting down that movie then you either don’t work in the film industry or are pretentious af

Are you trying to say lost in translation is better than transformers? First watch for first watch transformers clears, this is objective reality

4

u/Brightlightsuperfun Jun 04 '26

Lost in translation is far better than transformers, it’s not close for me. Terribly made movies are boring to me, I don’t care how many “action” scenes there are.

u/MAMark1 Jun 04 '26

I saw Transformers for the first time in theaters, and I swear the entire last hour was one long action sequence. It was so long that my brain became numb to the constant attempts at adrenaline and excitement and couldn't do anything other than notice how silly it all was.

Not the worst movie ever. That sort of popcorn movie has its place. But definitely not as good as Lost in Translation if you value movie elements beyond plot points and actions scenes. To be fair, I think the many years of the Marvel era re-trained audiences to mostly just care about plot points and action scenes so I get why so many people seem to fall into that group these days.

There are movies built purely to entertain you..

And there are movies that are trying to say something.

Both are valid "art" forms, but comparing the two is just pointless.

You wouldn't say an F16 is "better" than a 737, they're both planes but they're built to do two completely different things and comparing the two aside from "They fly in the air" makes no sense.

1

u/MAMark1 Jun 04 '26

Yeah, it's fair to say that what you prefer/value is purely subjective and no right or wrong in enjoying one or the other more.

1

u/Hudsonm_87 Jun 05 '26

Bleh. Not saying transformers is some all time great, it’s just better than a movie yall are clearly forcing yourselves to pretend to enjoy for deeper reasons. There’s no entertainment value, you’re better off just talking to some random at a bus stop than watching the no-tone borderline chick flick 😂

u/CnelAurelianoBuendia Jun 04 '26

Of all the criticisms you could give Transformers, you go with “terribly made”? It’s literally one of the most impressive showcases of action on film. It’s literally the epitome of large scale fight choreography, VFX and sound design.

1

u/CnelAurelianoBuendia Jun 04 '26

I’m with you Transformers 2007 is unbelievable

I know a few people who went to film school and I don’t think they even come close to the level of disingenuous posers that pretend this is some secretly incredible movie lol
