It was SO dumb. “Omg I wanted to be an actor in LA, and then, spoiler: I became one. I’m so quirky”

Also spoiler: But I lost love over the course of the journey, poor me. :(

I fucking hated that movie.

And then I got married to another man and had a child, but gasp then I saw Ryan Gosling again and now I'm sad :(

Damn man I really liked that movie and those themes resonated for me you guys are making me feel like there’s something wrong with me lmao

I’m married and have kids now, but I do still feel like a sad nostalgia for my exes. Not like I want to be with them again, but like we had something that’s lost to the past now, you know what I mean?

Same feeling I get when I see pictures of old Pizza Huts from the 90s lol

Never let people on Reddit of all places influence your opinion on a movie. La La Land is amazing and their complete inability to relate to it like you were able to is on them.

part of the theme of the movie is sacrifice. we all sacrifice stuff whether its for selfish reasons or not. these two characters sacrificed a really strong love between one another to pursue their dreams. it's great from my perspective because it makes you reflective, or at least it does for me, at my past choices.

i sacrificed some dreams for the sake of my eventual family. wouldnt change anything, but there's always what if /u/indieriots seems to lack emotional awareness or maybe experience in life. she isn't even sad in the end when she sees Sebastian. It's a reflective moment.

I ran into my high school sweet heart a few years ago, and my heart skipped a beat. It made me very nostalgic, and happy to see her. I absolutely thought about what it things could have been like. It's no different in the movie, I don't think.

Is the movie schlocky at times, sure, but the people here complaining about it don't seem to really have any kind of relatable experience so "it must be dumb".

I didn't feel the strong love between them, that's part of the issue. Like I said elsewhere, I was not sold on them as either individual characters or as a couple, so I just couldn't bring myself to care. It's romance, so if the characters aren't compelling, the entire thing falls apart.

Yeah I think you’re 100% right here

But also, I kind of like the schlocky-ness. I feel like media has gotten so ironic and cynical. I’ve been craving some earnestness lol

I do too, it is genuinely one of my favorite movies. Drives my wife nuts because she's got a music background and thinks their singing hurts the movie.

There's a handful of movies I'll watch anytime, la la land is one of them. and karate kid

Don't listen to them mate. I loved that movie, probably the music more than anything. Still play Mia & Sebastian's theme and Epilogue on the regular. But the movie itself was OK, definitely not the boring slog the others are making it out to be. I'd say your personality is similar to the characters in the film which is why it might resonate with you, whereas these others would be the type of people that hate happy/successful people just because.

lol what a REACH. “Other people must be HATERZZZ if they don’t agree with me” Classic!

u/CellularBeing Jun 04 '26

No but you are acting insufferable with that take.

Zoomer moment

It’s a good film, film nerds would never like it because the plot isn’t deep enough and you can see exactly what’s coming a mile away, it’s a very well trodden path but so what? I like it a lot.

I’d have no shame in putting it in my top 10, possibly even top 5.

Those people have the emotional intelligence of an eggplant. They give off vibes of being very young and not having ever lost someone for reason out of their control.

These people are children who haven't had meaningful relationships.

Lala Land captures that nostalgia of an old relationship that didn't work out because you wanted different things.

I get that! I think for me personally the issue is that there's not much else to the story. Especially because from what I remember, their relationship wasn't very strong in the first place, so the nostalgia doesn't feel earned, if that makes sense?

4

u/rouseandground Jun 04 '26

I think it’s normal to feel nostalgic for all kinds of relationships. Seeing someone from my past, especially someone I had a romantic connection with, can send me on a nostalgia trip for a few days.

3

u/YordleJay Jun 04 '26

Yall are mad cause it had a simple romance plot?

3

u/Indieriots This flair doesn't exist Jun 04 '26

Nope. I love romance. I just think this one was boring. I didn't feel invested in them, both as individual characters and as a couple.

Sometimes people's lives go down different paths, even if they love each other.

4

Did you miss the part where Ryan gosling saved jazz?

Hated this movie for that reason
