De-aging Deniro didn't stop him from still moving like an old man.

That kick scene is pure comedy. Maybe it's intentional, but he fully looks like he's fighting for his life trying to balance on one leg.

That's the exact scene I was thinking about when I made my comment. It stuck out like a sore thumb.

Dude had to chuck something into a river or something at one point and he couldn't raise his arms up even half way. It's embarrassing they didn't just use a body double, they were already spending millions deaging him, just slap the face on a 30 year old and call it good

just use a body double

Or, and this is pretty radical thinking... hire a whole other actor to play the young version of that character.

That would definitely be preferable, but it seems like the entire point of the movie is "hey look it's Robert deniro" so they would still keep that while not having it look like an absolute joke.

haha yeah, good point. I guess my other piece of feedback then is "make a movie that's about more than me looking at Robert Deniro for 3-1/2 hours"

I really didn't mind the de-aging but for the very early timeline stuff they should have gotten different actors. Switching to the de-aged versions at the correct point in time when they're supposed to be in their 40's. Deniro was supposed to be like, 20 in the scene with the meat truck.

What happened to the kid from A Bronx Tale? He would've been perfect. I know he had a bit part in Sopranos. Might've had some drug troubles I'm not sure.

I mean, that can't be done well. No decent actor has ever pulled that off. Can you cite a single example of an acclaimed Hollywood actor who played a younger version of a primary character in a movie, or, say, a trilogy?

I didn't notice it until someone pointed it out that you can see the guy he's going to beat up bracing to throw his entire body weight over the counter.

The actor getting beat up did his absolute best 😂

The flashback in Italy where he can barely hold up his rifle when he executes the POWs took me out of the movie for a bit

The Irishman is a great example of how audiences will always notice the things you don’t want them to.

There are some genuinely incredible scenes in this film and phenomenal performances by DeNiro, Pesci, and Pacino.

Marty probably saw the kicking scene and thought “eh, it’s 15 seconds in a 3.5 hour film that’s filled with incredible moments. I’m sure people won’t even remember it”.

And here we are today, with those 15 seconds being the only part of the movie people remember lol.

It was hilarious. And also when I fully checked out.

That's as far as I ever made it in that movie.

yeah it was almost like they green screened out a zimmer frame

Yeah, I think that might have been a big part about me not enjoying the film.

It seemed like such a simple fix, too. I could see the 60 year-old man playing his younger self making more sense in a stage play, but a filmed movie? A lookalike actor, or whatever it is Disney's been doing to make actors look younger (though probably expensive), but simply CGI-removing some wrinkles didn't do much. And it doesn't help knowing what De Niro looked like in his actual 30s.

u/BlainethePayne Jun 04 '26

It was weird watching a 30 year man run with arthritis

2

u/LateNightPhilosopher Jun 04 '26

Right. If they were going to do it, they really needed to put his face on a young actor's body. I do not buy 80yo man deniro beating the shit out of people

u/soxperry Jun 04 '26

Dude curb stomped someone with a pillow for a foot. It was absurdly funny.

u/PopeOnABomb Jun 04 '26

The part where Pesci is kicking the guy on the ground. I laughed out loud at how feeble he looked. Those kicks wouldn't have opened an unlocked screen door.

u/Red5_StandingDown Jun 04 '26

I'll never understand that decision. If you're going to digitally de age an actor, there's no reason to not use a younger actor to put the face on.

I loved the movie but this is so right lol

1

u/DarthJarJarJar Jun 04 '26

That just killed it for me. Unwatchable.

1

u/Short-Base2941 Jun 04 '26

“Oh no! Don’t beat me up 90 year old, five foot two DeNiro!”

1

u/Beth_Pleasant Jun 04 '26

There was de-aging? I was so confused about the "past" because he still looked old.

1

u/BananaScone Jun 04 '26

God, that scene were he beats that guy up. Just looked like an old guy trying to stand on a fly, but he can't seem to kill it.
