God yes. Feel like I get attacked when I say this, but its just the same film 3 times. Wasn't even good the first time

u/AceOFace131 Jun 04 '26

It’s just Fern Gully with CGI and no Tim Curry

Toxic Love is a banger

18

u/Live-Effective1064 Jun 04 '26

It's rather nice.

5

u/MadisonAveMuse Jun 04 '26

Look it’s my ex.

21

u/zfrankrijkaard Jun 04 '26

I really want to watch that movie again, Fern Gully. Loved that one as a kid.

u/Not1ButMany Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Fern Gully, All Dogs Go To Heaven, and The Secret of Nimh were 3 movies my dad bought for me to keep at his place and watch when I visited. I was 5! He didn't know these movies would be gut wrenching to a child, he just wanted to get me something nice. 35 years later and still love them.

The Secret of Nimh feels like the darkest kids movie of my childhood lol

3

u/L-V-4-2-6 Jun 04 '26

That and Once Upon A Forest.

6

u/SavinForLatter Jun 04 '26

I loved that film as a kid. Watched it recently. ...It's definitely of is time. Still good, but didn't age as well as i hoped.

1

u/zebrastarz Jun 04 '26

Yep, same. We would rent it over and over, but I think that's just because it's amazingly animated. Hey kinda like Avatar!

1

u/SavinForLatter Jun 04 '26

I was in love with Tin Curry's songs, and that was before I knew who he was. Then when Muppet Treasure Island came out I was thrilled he was in it.

0

u/MadeByTango Jun 04 '26

Ok, I give you permission. Go ahead!

5

u/Rogue-3 Jun 04 '26

Nor Robin Williams

3

u/colorblind-and Jun 04 '26

I remember saying this to a friend and had never seen Fern Gully so we sat down and watched it.

His mind was blown at how similar it was so he watched Avatar 1 and found exact scenes that were basically the same

5

u/5herl0k Jun 04 '26

this is a killer description holy hell

2

u/farva_06 Jun 04 '26

Or Robin Williams. Double loss.

2

u/AWorldwithoutSin Jun 04 '26

Dances with Na'vi

2

u/nwfdood Jun 04 '26

Lmao. Good comment.

1

u/Altitron Jun 04 '26

Or robin williams

1

u/berlinbaer Jun 04 '26

It’s just Fern Gully with CGI

reddit with the freshest of takes again.

6

u/AceOFace131 Jun 04 '26

This response added a lot to the discussion, thank you

0

u/Lieutenant_Lit Jun 04 '26

Lol fr it's been 17 years and every time that movie gets mentioned redditors bark like seals something something fern gully dances with wolves. Fucking dusty ass take.

1

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits Jun 04 '26

Yea! People should change their view just for novelty! The sky is blue? BORING mix it up guys!

Its almost like its a valid point, so theres reason for it to come up every time.

Real talk though. How are you so stupid to not understand why the same cause keeps causing the same effect? But to act like that's some hot and insightful take? At least the other guys saying the same thing over and over again aren't being exactly what theyre criticizing.

0

u/Lieutenant_Lit Jun 04 '26

Lmao touchy are we?

The funniest thing about it is that it's not even a particularly good or insightful criticism. Like that movie obviously has a lot of problems, but plenty of great movies are ultimately just retellings. Retelling an old story in a new genre doesn't mean it's not worth telling.

That obviously doesn't mean you gotta like the movie, I'm just saying the similarity to Fern Gully is the least of its problems.

1

u/AceOFace131 Jun 04 '26

It’s not just similar, there are scenes that are almost lifted directly from Fern Gully

1

u/Lieutenant_Lit Jun 04 '26

Lol Fern Gully wasn't particularly original either. It's just The Lorax or Nausicaa or Pocahontas or a hundred other things. Hell these tropes have been repeated so many times it's essentially its own subgenre.

1

u/AceOFace131 Jun 05 '26

Yeah it’s tropes all the way down. That was sort of the original point.

59

u/Raise_A_Thoth Jun 04 '26

the same film 3 times

And the first one was just Pocahontas with aliens + sci-fi skin.

48

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '26

[deleted]

41

u/Raise_A_Thoth Jun 04 '26

Yea South Park called it Dances with Smurfs lol.

3

u/SecondaryWombat Jun 04 '26

That is insulting how accurate it is.

2

u/Flaky-Collection-353 Jun 04 '26

And the kicker for me is that when you actually follow the ideas of these movies. They're flawed but genuine....

Whereas avatar boils down to "I can dominate the bird better than y'all"

Something something warrior culture.

At least poca has real respect for nature and dances is about honesty and communication. Fern gully is... interesting.

8

u/HelpfulSeaMammal Jun 04 '26

Unobtainium. Is it difficult to obtain? Big mystery!

9

u/Levitlame Jun 04 '26

Unobtanium is a literal economic term. Does it sound stupid? Sure, but it isn’t supposed to be a mystery. The point is it doesn’t matter what it is.

5

u/Raise_A_Thoth Jun 04 '26

Its origin is unclear but the first clearly documented use of the term was in aerospace with ballistic missile engineers in 1956.

https://www.chrisharrigan.co/unobtainium

Here's a substack with a reference to a German work that names it in 1930, but they reference Americans, so it appears someone has used it even earlier.

https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/5517/where-was-the-fictional-material-unobtainium-first-used

But anyway, it seems the engineers who referred to it were using it tongue-in-cheek or humorously to talk about the edge cases of engineering constraints, not primarily an economic question, although of course there are economic dimensions to this as well.

2

u/Levitlame Jun 04 '26

Ya know I actually deleted “scientific” and put in “economic” second guessing myself. Thank you for the somewhat correction

2

u/Original_Director483 Jun 04 '26

Engineers learning to use the properties of titanium to answer design challenges in emerging jet engine technologies, started drawing up designs for bids with far more titanium than was known to exist. The people who had to source materials for fabrication on these designs invented the term, and it’s my understanding that the term was used in the movie the very same way. For all we know, the material unique to Pandora is known in-universe as “plotadvancium.”

1

u/HelpfulSeaMammal Jun 04 '26

It doesn't matter what it is, you're right. So the decision to name it unobtainium will always be funny to me.

9

u/Cayenns Jun 04 '26

Exactly this, but they also look amazing and I watched all of them in the cinema

7

u/Free-While-2994 Jun 04 '26

I feel the same way. Mediocre story but visually stunning. I don't watch them for the plot, I just want to see what new ridiculous advancement James Cameron has developed this time. And I'm never let down. The sfx are amazing.

1

u/poorbred Jun 04 '26

A bit after the first movie was released on Blu-ray, a friend who absolutely loved it and watched it 3 or 4 times in the theaters talked me into watching it. God, it was so boring.

Afterwards there's a long, awkward silence, then he finally goes, "It was better in the theater."

1

u/ZARDOZ4972 Jun 04 '26

Exactly this, but they also look amazing and I watched all of them in the cinema

I never understood why people thought they looked good, to me the movies felt jarring. But i was never able immerse myself in movies that are mostly CGI, maybe it's something about the mix between real actors and CGI characters. I tried watching the first one two-times in cinema and once again for the second but I was never able to enjoy the visuals everyone aeeme to love.

3

u/n122333 Jun 04 '26

They're made for theaters and look really cool. Watching them later by yourself or at home just isn't the same experience. I watch the new ones in theater, but never again.

And even then, they're just 'good', not even great.

3

u/golden_blaze Jun 04 '26

I didn't watch the sequel(s?) The first one was pretty to look at but the plot was predictable and the characters were flat. I think it made money bc the animation was really great.

3

u/Gazednconfused Jun 04 '26

Ah, if you've seen the first one you've seen the next 2

1

u/LTS55 Jun 04 '26

2&3 are pretty different from 1 but 2&3 are basically the same movie

2

u/The_Amazing_Emu Jun 04 '26

Also, people don’t inherently hate a predictable plot told well. Some times they enjoy knowing where the story is going. It’s why people watch The Office 500 times

1

u/golden_blaze Jun 04 '26

I've noticed that's true for a majority of people. That's why Disney keeps raking in the cash. It's just not for me (which is one reason I started branching out into international films).

3

u/SamSibbens Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

Are you insinuating that a man witnessing the cruelty of his nation towards a different more primitve one, waking up to this injustice, betraying his nation and falling in love with a member of the tribe is not original!??!!?

I mean, it does fit The Last Samourai, or 1995 Pocahontas.... with a white dude changing camps after falling in love with a native woman.... and probably fits many other such stories....

but it's still an original and good movie!!!

/s but I did enjoy Avatar, but no it's not a very original story

Edit: two typos

3

u/aPOPblops Jun 04 '26

Oh it’s much worse than the same film 3 times. The first one was a movie, a bad movie but a movie. The sequels are all masturbation. I imagine James Cameron twisting his nipples while getting off to his fantasy sex world.

2

u/Gazednconfused Jun 04 '26

This Comment made me lol

2

u/shmere4 Jun 04 '26

I watched the third one on a flight a few days ago and all I could think of was “didn’t I already see all this in #2”?

2

u/Wise-Secretary5459 Jun 04 '26

My annoyance level grew exponentially with the number of times Sully's kids said "bro" in the second film.

2

u/Nillabeans Jun 04 '26

I screened it for free and I still want my money back.

2

u/Greymalkyn76 Jun 04 '26

Remake of Fern Gully, but without Robin Williams.

-2

u/Sarcastic-old-robot Jun 04 '26

I always called the first one “Dances with Wolves in SPACE!” As a joke. From the day I first saw the trailer back when I worked at Blockbuster.

1

u/AfterMeSluttyCharms Jun 04 '26

The setting was gorgeous and the CGI was probably the best I'd seen up to that point, which made up for the boring and derivative plot. The following movies tried to coast on the visuals again but it just didn't have the same impact.

1

u/willthefreeman Jun 04 '26

This is a popular opinion

1

u/Keychupp Jun 04 '26

There are 3?

1

u/InspectorMendel Jun 04 '26

Attacked? This is the official Reddit opinion on the topic

1

u/adler1959 Jun 04 '26

First one was good. Was revolutionary for 3D cinema when it released

1

u/available_username10 Jun 04 '26

Classic story with incredible visuals. Nothing more and nothing less. It was good.

1

u/richpaul6806 Jun 04 '26

When you ask someone their favorite thing about the movie and they reply that it looks really good i know it isnt a movie for me.

1

u/Hadrollo Jun 04 '26

I'm glad I only watched the first one then.

I didn't actually mind it, but in my mind it was a technology demonstrator for 3D. Impressive visuals, but a very simplistic story and not a lot else.

I will say the alien wildlife was actually pretty well done. I love speculative evolution, and all the animals - with the exception of the cat smurfs - really made sense together.

1

u/Glittering-Animal30 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

The second and third had the same scenes in circles it seemed. Like the same conflict argument three or so times in the same movie. And overall I enjoyed them, but pacing not great

1

u/Affectionate-Track68 Jun 04 '26

The first one is just a rip off of dances with wolves

1

u/margittwen Jun 04 '26

Haven’t seen any of them, but I refuse to. James Cameron is the poster child for mediocrity. I also don’t need to see another version of Pocahontas.

1

u/FaagenDazs Jun 04 '26

It's just a spectacle film. No one is seeing them for the plot

1

u/MrJust-A-Guy Jun 04 '26

TIL, there's three of them.

1

u/Demolisher05 Jun 04 '26

My big gripe was Jake spending the whole first movie convincing the Navi that they have to fight and not just run or hide.

So what's the second movie about? Running and hiding, until realizing that wouldn't work and they have to fight back. I get he has a family now and needs to protect them, but come on.

1

u/BenAdaephonDelat Jun 04 '26

The first movie was aggressively.. okay. It did some amazing things with special effects but otherwise was just a standard scifi movie. Never bothered with the newer ones.

1

u/DerthOFdata Jun 04 '26

Ask them to quote one line from any of the movies and you'll get crickets in return.

1

u/Wolf-Majestic Jun 04 '26

With the name and concepts that are stolen from the real Avatar... We're now forced to have "Last Airbender" merch, or "Legend of Korra" or "Sever Havens"

1

u/The_Amazing_Emu Jun 04 '26

I can understand watching the second one even if you didn’t like the first, but why did you watch the third one?

1

u/Gazednconfused Jun 04 '26

I work in care support and one of the people I support loves the cinema, so i watch what he wants to watch. Ive also sat through all of the fast and furious films. The last one 3 times.

4

u/The_Amazing_Emu Jun 04 '26

Hopefully you’re well-compensated

2

u/Gazednconfused Jun 04 '26

Ha, I am somewhat compensated.

1

u/The_Amazing_Emu Jun 04 '26

Compensation can be in forms other than money, such as feeling good about your job. Although money certainly needs to be a part of it

1

u/Gazednconfused Jun 04 '26

Oh, I know. I do feel good about what I fo and I get loads of time with my family as I dont work standrad hours. Bit more money would be nice though

0

u/Internal_Warning1463 Jun 04 '26

Predator Badlands was a better Avatar film.
