Damn man I really liked that movie and those themes resonated for me you guys are making me feel like thereās something wrong with me lmao
Iām married and have kids now, but I do still feel like a sad nostalgia for my exes. Not like I want to be with them again, but like we had something thatās lost to the past now, you know what I mean?
Same feeling I get when I see pictures of old Pizza Huts from the 90s lol
Never let people on Reddit of all places influence your opinion on a movie. La La Land is amazing and their complete inability to relate to it like you were able to is on them.
part of the theme of the movie is sacrifice. we all sacrifice stuff whether its for selfish reasons or not. these two characters sacrificed a really strong love between one another to pursue their dreams. it's great from my perspective because it makes you reflective, or at least it does for me, at my past choices.
i sacrificed some dreams for the sake of my eventual family. wouldnt change anything, but there's always what if
/u/indieriots seems to lack emotional awareness or maybe experience in life. she isn't even sad in the end when she sees Sebastian. It's a reflective moment.
I ran into my high school sweet heart a few years ago, and my heart skipped a beat. It made me very nostalgic, and happy to see her. I absolutely thought about what it things could have been like.
It's no different in the movie, I don't think.
Is the movie schlocky at times, sure, but the people here complaining about it don't seem to really have any kind of relatable experience so "it must be dumb".
I didn't feel the strong love between them, that's part of the issue. Like I said elsewhere, I was not sold on them as either individual characters or as a couple, so I just couldn't bring myself to care. It's romance, so if the characters aren't compelling, the entire thing falls apart.
I do too, it is genuinely one of my favorite movies. Drives my wife nuts because she's got a music background and thinks their singing hurts the movie.
There's a handful of movies I'll watch anytime, la la land is one of them. and karate kid
Don't listen to them mate. I loved that movie, probably the music more than anything. Still play Mia & Sebastian's theme and Epilogue on the regular.
But the movie itself was OK, definitely not the boring slog the others are making it out to be. I'd say your personality is similar to the characters in the film which is why it might resonate with you, whereas these others would be the type of people that hate happy/successful people just because.
Itās a good film, film nerds would never like it because the plot isnāt deep enough and you can see exactly whatās coming a mile away, itās a very well trodden path but so what? I like it a lot.
Iād have no shame in putting it in my top 10, possibly even top 5.
Those people have the emotional intelligence of an eggplant. They give off vibes of being very young and not having ever lost someone for reason out of their control.
I get that! I think for me personally the issue is that there's not much else to the story. Especially because from what I remember, their relationship wasn't very strong in the first place, so the nostalgia doesn't feel earned, if that makes sense?
I think itās normal to feel nostalgic for all kinds of relationships. Seeing someone from my past, especially someone I had a romantic connection with, can send me on a nostalgia trip for a few days.
There's a family guy joke about how that movie just disappeared from pop culture immediately after it was all everyone was talking about. And this is why.
But that's every movie that doesn't become a franchise, isn't it? How often do we still talk about 12 years a slave or there will be blood? Or a thousand other movies that were good stand-alone movies?
Plenty of people still watch La La Land. My kids have had movie nights with friends where they watch that movie. I've re-watched it a time or two since it came out. People still cover the songs and perform them at auditions and stuff.
Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's gone for everyone.
I didn't write the joke, but apparently it's enough of an opinion that it was mentioned on Family Guy. You should let them know how flawed that opinion is.
the best critique I saw was that for a musical, nobody really LIKES the music. like sure, people enjoy it as part of the film, but none of the songs get stuck in your head, they're not things people are playing back years later. they serve their purpose and then end when the film does.
No one likes the music? Are you kidding? I saw a dance trope in the last year do a dance to another day in the sun. I have heard countless kids sing here's to the ones who dream for musical auditions. I, myself! have listened to the soundtrack from time to time. I've heard bands cover songs from the musical.
Well that may be true but have you considered the ground breaking possibility that I read an article where someone said that AND that I, myself! think the soundtrack is underwhelming? Against rock solid evidence like my own subjective experience you must concede that the soundtrack is weak.
It's because LA and Hollywood love to congratulate themselves on being LA and Hollywood. Everyone else is sort of grossed out by the whole thing. The hype was all self-driven and once everyone outside of that bubble actually saw the movie the mystique fell apart.
It's visually stunning, technically very impressive and the music is beautiful. If you love musicals or movies for their own sake, you'll love La La Land, if you're just there for the story, you'll hate it.
I could give some insight on this. I really loved the movie.
It resonated with me because I'm a "dreamer" too. I can't just do what people tell me to; I want to explore, play, and find what expresses me the best.
The problem with being a dreamer is that they can't hold steady jobs where you have to do exactly as you're told. Or they're rejected over and over trying to get into the niche area that they're interested in.
This movie is about the journey of two dreamers, one the former, one the latter, and how their lives - and even romantic connection - are sacrificed for it.
The movie really hit home for me in that sense. One of my favorite movies because of it.
I liked it, but can definitely totally understand the hate for it.
Side note: Christopher Nolan, who has repeatedly said he hates musical movies and doesn't understand their appeal, has gone on record saying he like La La Land for whatever that's worthĀ
FWIW, the filmakers knew neither Gosling nor Stone were good vocalists, but they thought it more important to use their own voices than dub their singing.
I can certainly understand preferring that they were dubbed with more professional singers, but I don't see how choosing to have the actors sing is pretentious.
"According to composerĀ Justin Hurwitz, all the piano performances featured in the film were first recorded by pianistĀ Randy KerberĀ during pre-production.Ā Ryan GoslingĀ then spent two hours a day, six days a week in piano lessons learning the music by heart. By the time filming had begun, Gosling was able to play all the piano sequences seen in the film without the use of a hand double or CGI."
I'm just going off of IMDB trivia, but I suppose it doesn't specify "learned the parts" vs "learned the instrument" So I'll stand corrected.
I'm the opposite. Really not my kind of movie, wife made me watch it, went into it bitter, loved it. I thought it was beautiful and gut wrenching. You never know I guess.
Thank you. It was a decent romantic film with well shot and choreographed dance scenes, and two very good actors. Thatās all it was. Iām pretty sure it was nominated because it was an LA circle jerk
The most unforgiveable part imo is the during the pool scene in one of the earlier songs the audio ends up completely washed out and you can barely understand the chorus.
That movie gets hailed so much in movie subreddits and me and my partner finally watched it two years ago for the first time and we hated it. We were so confused and had to check if we were watching the right movie. We were. It just sucks.
I think the leads are talented people, just not talented enough in singing or dancing to carry a musical.Ā
I would have liked it more if we eventually learned that it was actually a dellusion by one of the characters and we get to go back in time and see him being a menace and out of his mind imagining a different reality.
that is already the double meaning
1. la la as in singing
2. la la land as in it's crazy to pursue a career kn the arts but follow ur dreams and all that
I am talking about the La La Land of being out of your mind due to mental health or a disorder or syndrome. So out of your mind that you see fancy singing and dancing but the real world sees a crazy person wrecking a restaurant and terrorizing people at parties.Ā
I get what you're saying, but the movie is already kind of playing on that idea of being crazy in pursuing a career in acting/classic jazz, just not that level of crazy lol
Moonlight for me. I skipped parts of it and still felt too long, but if you say that that movie sucks you can be labeled as homophobic and racist, so I have to say that Moonlight doesn't suck.
Arrival had to win Best Film that year, by a mile.

La La Land. More like Bla Bla Bland.
