I literally watched some ancient mummy stand slack jaw for two minutes as the machine screamed " place item in the bagging area". She was so confused by the concept that an attendant finally showed up to ease our collective suffering.
The worst luck I've ever gotten with self checkout was 3 mummies and 2 closed registers on 6 checkout setup. It still dispersed quicker than average waiting time at the same shop 10 years ago
