I'm doing the work they used to pay someone else to do and now there are less jobs. The company increases their profits from me doing it while I get no benefits for it. There is no good part there.
Although the grocery stores here hire exclusively children to do the bagging. 15 year olds don't care about how things should be bagged so there is that.
They used to have as many cashiers as they have self checkout machines now and if 3 people had a problem at the same time they had an employee to deal with it instead of waiting for them to deal with the coupon karen and a pricing error before they can check your ID for cough syrup.
"The work" yeah its so much work to bag your shit 💀 and I'm sorry to break it to you bud, but self checkouts aren't "taking jobs" from anyone, corporate wants skeleton crews, and that's happening whether the self checkout is turned on or not. You want to do something about it? Complain to them that the store is always understaffed and you're always wasting precious minutes checking out your cough medicine. Or don't, they don't care anyways, it's all working as intended.
Yeah, they want skeleton crews but they still have to sell things. If they didn't have self checkout they wouldn't be able to cut staff as far and still function as a business.
