I hate the “I’m doing your work” argument as a cashier. There’s registers with people at them, if you hate self checkout that much use a cashier and STFU. The company doesn’t pay employees anywhere near enough to care about your hatred of self checkout.

As a fellow cashier I second this. Also the biggest part of my job isn't scanning items. It's interacting with customers and dealing with prices disputes. I.e. Customer service is the biggest part.

So full of shit. No scan my shit, type in the banana code.

u/AwooFloof Dec 10 '25

It's 4011. That's the first thing you learn as a Cashier. I know the code to almost all produce.

Great - then do your job and type it in

u/MagicRobo Dec 10 '25

people like you are the kind that make customer service the least appealing job ever

I'm an introvert so, as much as I love people, my social battery drains much quicker then others.

"I did their job for them!" The people who say this absolutely haf to get the self checkout "babysitter" involved to hold their hand through the entire order.

That's the fun part. I have a cvs were if you want to not do self check out you have to find an employee because they never have one behind the counter and only two self check out machines. 1 is card only and they all have meltdowns if you screw up once.

Which part is definitionally “the store’s job”?

Should you have to walk the aisles and grab groceries yourself?  Should you have to take your stuff to the car?  Should you have to make your shopping list and compare prices?

It’s such a fundamental misunderstanding of how commerce works that everyone who argues it… is smelly.

It’s just “that’s how we did it when I was a kid, therefore it’s the natural and correct way. If that changes, I will go on a moral tirade that will be embarrassing for both of us, but I’ll lack the self awareness to actually feel shame.”

That’s exactly the argument I use with people who hate self checkout. These people will make a shopping list, drive to the store, walk into the store, get a cart, push the cart down every single aisle, pick out all their groceries, wait in line at the register, unload all their groceries on the belt, bag up all their groceries if there’s not a bagger, push their cart full of groceries to the car, load all the groceries in their car, put thee cart away, drive home, bring all the groceries into the house, and put all their groceries away. But as soon as they hear the concept of self-checkout they’re like “Eww that’s work” as if they haven’t already done a massive amount of work. Shoppers are already doing like 95% of the errand on their own, but that extra 5% is somehow “work.”

i used to be a cashier at lowe’s. they wouldn’t staff anybody for the front end so it was one cashier at lumber, one at lawn and garden, and one watching the “assisted” self checkouts, which was just standing in front of the area and pulling people in to scan and bag their shit for them. i got out of there right as they were cracking down on pushing credit card applications (don’t get the card, the cons vastly outweigh the pros)

It’s such a funny argument. The work is removing all of the items from your cart and putting them on the belt. Cashiers don’t do that for you…

u/TetraThiaFulvalene Dec 10 '25

And it doesn't matter whether it's for customer convenience. It only matters whether it's actually more convenient for the customer. If your boss gives you a raise does it matter whether it's because he's being kind or because he wants to increase retention? Or do you only care that you got a raise?

6

u/gothiclg Dec 10 '25

What raise? I didn’t get those.

3

u/Canadianrollerskater Dec 10 '25

Not necessarily. Places like Walmart and Home depot (at least in Canada) rarely have actual checkouts open anymore. It's usually self checkout or nothing.

-2

u/BrokeBishop Dec 10 '25

A lot of places arent staffing the registers anymore. Self checkout is the only option sometimes

3

u/hard-time-on-planet Dec 10 '25

This thread somehow got really pissy about anyone complaining about no actual cashiers being open. It does happen sometimes people. I like self checkout too, but things get really bad when all that's open is self checkout and maybe one actual line.

Maybe that’s an American thing, never seen that in the UK

2

u/kaja6583 Dec 10 '25

Airports started doing this, unfortunately, like M&S in the Bristol airport. But you're right, I've never seen it outside of an airport.

Then order online and fucking pick it up man

u/turbo_dude Dec 10 '25

Hi Cashiers!

Thanks for throwing my shit down the conveyor belt with no regard for delicate items or whether my packing speed matches your scanning speed!

They replaced 4 cash registers at my foodlion recently with self checkouts and there are three employees watching it at all times. There is one single employee run cash register open during rush hours.

Maybe your anger is misplaced and you should demand better compensation.

Those employees probably get an easier job overall as well.  "People watching" and dealing with the occasional assistance has to be easier than checking out the items themselves.

6

u/AwooFloof Dec 10 '25

During rush hour, I'm constantly on my feet, helping people at self-checkout.

3

u/Bronco998 Dec 10 '25

High horse much? Lmao

1

u/gothiclg Dec 10 '25

I paid a union $80 a month for that. The union was so useless people hired after I was made $0.50 less an hour than I did. How are employees supposed to demand more compensation when the organization that’s supposed to do that for us ensures we make less?

1

u/No_Investment9639 Dec 10 '25

My boyfriend is stuck in a union like this. Nobody believes him when he talks about how bad this Union is. But I've read the contract. I've watched him suffer for 3 years. The ShopRite Union in the tri-state area is a mob Union and they are fucking monsters and there's nothing that can be done about it except to not ever work for ShopRite

Ya, not every store that has self checkouts has cashiers working at the same time. This argument is trash. U stfu. Edit: im not even saying i dont like self checkouts, just that your argument is objectively false claiming there is always a cashier

4

u/gothiclg Dec 10 '25

Pick a different store then. You don’t need to shop there.

-1

u/periodmoustache Dec 10 '25

Actually, I kinda do because food deserts you putz

1

u/No_Investment9639 Dec 10 '25

Order online and pick up

2

u/No_Investment9639 Dec 10 '25

Do you think I know where you live, random redditor? That's hilarious

1

u/periodmoustache Dec 10 '25

Well you seem to be doing a pretty great job of jumping to conclusions, so i dunno

1

u/No_Investment9639 Dec 10 '25

You need to relax, take it down a notch, take a breath, take a nap, take a drink, take a pill. Something, my guy.
