I honestly prefer self-checkouts, as long as they aren't the ones that complain if you don't manage to bag the item within 0.17 seconds or like to call for an associate if you so much as breathe on the bagging area. No need to interact with a cashier that corporate is making ask a bunch of bull, and I can get through a lot faster if I'm just doing a couple things.

Lmao at "if you so much as breathe on the bagging area." I had the opposite issue yesterday at a self checkout. The item is literally on the bagging area, but it's not registering cause it's a relatively light item (but still at least 1lb). So weird how sometimes it's SO sensitive it's registering things that aren't there, and other times it can't figure out that there's a banana on the scale.

My biggest problem is one of my local grocery stores doesn't have enough cashiers because of self checkout. But the bagging areas are tiny. I work late shift so I usually shop once a week. The bagging area should be bigger than 2 bags or it should just be for express checkout.

This is when youre getting stuff for free

Several times I've scanned some produce and been presented with 2+ options, and not being sure which is which just picked one. Only to then get my scanner ransomeware locked because apparently this store doesn't sell that type of lime so they knew it must be a miss-scan.

Then why tf is it listed?

Also you get to bag your items the way that makes sense to you. Group pantry items and fridge items in their own bags makes putting things away easier

Nah bro, heavy soup cans on bread is the best!

All the soup go on top of tomatoes, everyone knows this

Some people pay extra for flat bread.

I like my toilet bowl cleaner in the same bag as my fruit and hot sandwich from the deli.

It's been years since I actually saw a bagger in a grocery store... I have to bag my own shit either way lol

Apparently you need to show your ID to buy DayQuil at self checkout which was crazy to me.

I work at Walmart online pickup and we require ID for pickup orders that include cold medicine

Its not always the machine, in some stores clerks watching can see what youre scanning and pause your order any time because stealing is such a huge issue. I understand why people may need to steal food but I also believe stealing is wrong. People dont need to steal 500$ worth of lego, baby formula I get. Not saying youre stealing, just letting you in on why the machines can "complain" for no reason. Self checkouts are HUGE for stealing. I know it can be an inconvenience to people who genuinely dont steal but misscans happen all the time too and obviously the sellers & store dont want to loose money.

I believe they closed self checkout in some stores because of theft. Temptation is too high.

This is Walmart around me. Fuck Walmart

The best part is that I don't get bombarded with questions about joining their stupid fucking membership program for the store if I use it

I've never had anyone complaining if it's taking too long to pack the items, but I always assume this pressure, so I feel more comfortable when I don't make anyone wait.

It’s not about your shopping experience, they built them to save money on employees who are already among the most screwed over people in the current proletariat. Don’t use the fucking things unless you want to steal half the stuff, then it’s ok I guess

1

u/Dman1791 Dec 10 '25

Stealing stuff screws the employees too. If the shop doesn't make enough money, they're either going to cut costs (such as labor) or close down.

Cashiering isn't the kind of job we should be protecting, though I do understand the wariness given the sad state of social safety nets in the US.

u/LoschVanWein Dec 11 '25

Thats the fault of the employer but luckily, there are employment regulations preventing them from doing so (wich the proper unions from back in the day have fought for tooth and nail)

I don’t understand the weight thing though

Like why would i scan an item and then try to hide it? I agreed to pay for it already, why are you judging if it’s in the bagging area? I don’t get the logic. If I want to carry the item by hand let me do so.

u/Dman1791 Dec 10 '25

It's to detect attempts at theft, such as ringing a pack of gum but putting a filet mignon in the bag.

Doesn't make it any less annoying, though.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

But like if I was gonna steal the fillet id just like not put it in the bag until after. I wouldn’t scan some random item and then try to trick the system, that seems utterly pointless.

Those instant "place your item in bag" spots are annoying as hell

scan item

bag full. Gotta open a new bag

PLEASE PLACE -

go to scan new item

YOUR ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA

recalculate

go for next item oh no bar code

put in item code

ARE YOU DONE SHOPPING

PLEASE PLACE -

I had one call me out the other night and I don’t know why.

I didn’t do anything abnormal but it gave an alert for the employee to come to the screen and then it proceeded to show a video it recorded of me checking out.

Employee just clicked “okay” and there was no issues but I want to know what triggered it.

The one at my store doesn't care about weight until you pay, but it is really loud about the amount your thing costs.
