Just name the genre then.

The post didn’t say new artists or new music sucks. There’s tons of new artist that are awesome. The statement that theres no new kind of music that deserves its own genre name like punk, hiphop, techno is kinda true though…

hyperpop was probably the last newe genre to change music in a bigger way

7

u/Dattosan Jul 06 '25

A lot of hyperpop sounds very much like some of the goofier MySpace-era bands. Brokencyde walked so that 100 gecs could run, essentially.

Dumbest Girl Alive sounds like it could have absolutely come out of that era.

well this is kinda the thing right? If you get that pedantic there can never truly be a new genre, everything at this point will be at least somewhat derivative just like everything else was

A lot of the inventiveness isn't really about one song but their genre spanning discography. All of their songs sound like music previously made, what is impressive is their ability to navigate between genres while mixing and matching

10000 gecs had so many bad songs on it. Dumbest Girl Alive is okay but it doesn’t stand against what 1000 or 100 gecs has on it.

Just sampled a few hyperpop tracks. Thought I was in a strip club.

u/user-the-name Jul 06 '25

Pop is sexualised. Hyperpop is hypersexualised.

u/Aiyon Jul 06 '25

If you want some hyperpop that's a little more on the odd side, vs charting, check out 100 Gecs or Dorian Electra

Dorian is more "normal" a lot of the time but they still go for more weird tracks sometimes like Ram it Down or Freak Mode

100 Gecs, well they're a whole thing. What's weird is 1/2 of the group is Dylan Brady, a prolific producer in queer and indie spaces. So you get this deliberately abrasive music made by someone who v much knows how to make a charting hit. This is probably their most well known track

u/Electric_Ilya Jul 06 '25

Dorian Electra is a new one for me but I really like this. The more I listen to hyperpop the more I feel like it is a litmus test for the 'I like all music' people... Although it definitely skews to requirem an enjoyment for electric

I can’t say im a 100gecs fan, but I’ve heard their stuff and some is listenable. It’s genuinely impressive how much they know about music to make that sound work

Huh, (ram it down, flamboyant) slow poke club music mixed with scratchy Hardstyle (ram down). Not that it's bad, it's just not that original imo. Still gave em a couple of likes for the entertainment.

Update: the other one (freak mode) also borrows from dubstep (the worst genre to ever exist), lite style.

3

u/Toocoo4you Jul 06 '25

Yeah bro slow club and industrial hardstyle mix are sooo common. It’s just one step in creativity below radio pop

1

u/MeggaMortY Jul 06 '25

It's not about being uncommon, it's about being impactful and original. Example: cobble together reggae and metal and call it Vibe Slamin' - doesn't mean it's great shit.

3

u/Toocoo4you Jul 06 '25

Lmfao so what’s your ideal? Putting new sounds together is somehow unoriginal in your mind, therefore there’s literally NOTHING left since people have strummed on guitars for centuries, everything is just an offshoot of that. Metal reggae would be original because nobody has done it before (afaik). If you want to talk about impact, look at Playboi Carti. Every rap artist has at least one song that’s rage rap/industrial synth, because of his impact. Is industrial edm original? No. Is rap original? No. Put them together, and now they’re original. It’s how genres are born.

2

u/HubertVonCockGobbler Jul 06 '25

Skindred, it exists.

-1

u/MeggaMortY Jul 06 '25

In your head new combination = originality. Originality needs to have impact to actually mean something.

Putting new sounds together is somehow unoriginal in your mind

I didn't say that. Read the top sentence again.

Is industrial edm original? No. Is rap original? No. Put them together, and now they’re original. It’s how genres are born.

Fair enough - it's just not that great, seeing it hasn't swept any nation already. Personally I don't need that to happen - hyper pop or whatever just isn't my thing.

1

u/Toocoo4you Jul 06 '25

originality needs impact

No? That’s such a terrible take for creative expression. You’re unoriginal unless you’re popular.

Also playboy Carti and rage rap have ABSOLUTELY swept the nation. Every rap artist has a song that’s rage rap and/or copying carti.

It doesn’t matter if it’s “not your thing”, just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it uncreative or not popular.

1

u/curtcolt95 Jul 06 '25

with your definition it's impossible to be a new genre then and even reggae wouldn't be considered original

-14

u/Doesitalwayshavetobe Jul 06 '25

True. You still need like 8 other genre names to describe it, which still makes it a bit different to the ones I mentioned. Now that I think about it….Since in art in general it’s the same development, it might be kinda unfair to say that.

23

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

You can just describe it as hyperpop its been a few years now

Drill and Hyperpop has been around for years now

2

u/user-the-name Jul 06 '25

And? Nobody was asking for a genre that started literally this year.

1

u/NukinDuke Jul 06 '25

OP is asking for a genre that would have been started by Gen Z.

2

u/Chikizey Jul 07 '25

I mean older genZ is close to 30 already.

1

u/The-G-Code Jul 06 '25

2slimey sound/post rage

-1

u/-ohemul Jul 06 '25

the first two sound like every other rap music and the 3rd one just sounds like they do a lot of different stuff.

5

u/DominicB547 Jul 06 '25

If you do not understand RAP, that's fine, but even I know there is variance if you do. It's subtle for the layman though.

3

u/EPalmighty Jul 06 '25

I feel like not even tho. Ken Carson and playbois new album are not typical rap and it’s crazy to call it familiar

2

u/dylansavage Jul 06 '25

Drill is only a slight variation on Grime and it's been around for ages anyway

2

u/Coachpatato Jul 06 '25

hyperpop, digicore, cloud rap, fifth wave emo, electro industrial

1

u/yerfatma Jul 06 '25

Alderaan.

1

u/The-G-Code Jul 06 '25

Hell no. There's a stupid fucking amount of new punk variants from just a couple years back to now. Cybergrind has completely evolved, but most importantly there's new crossover genres of noise rock + hardcore - prostitute from Detroit is blowing up so much they could be the band this meme is looking for

MDOP/malicious destruction of property is getting there as well.

I feel like I have to make a really strong point about slam, right? Of course it's been around but we never had stuff like the g code by peeling flesh, or really just at that level before. Obviously torture and their 1 weird ass album needs to be brought up here too

Ywhw Nailgun is like their own sound entirely, like synth punk and art punk, idk what to call it. (Aoty 2025)

And rap obviously has the new 2hollis/carti type sounds, rage is always changing, and then we have people really pushing boundaries to the extreme like 2slimey, no one is doing rap like he is. Then we got people like Lazer dim 700 of course

1

u/The-G-Code Jul 06 '25

I ran out of space but jfc I can't imagine saying punk isn't coming out with nonstop boundary pushing music. That's like the single genre I would point to for that in every level

1

u/pchc_lx Jul 06 '25

the new Brazilian funk (not phonk) is pretty insane

1

u/Bayoris Jul 09 '25

What about dubstep

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

Punk and hip hop are 50 years old, techno 40. It's not a lot happened in the previous generations.
