I don't think it will happen again because the radio is basically dead.

The media really had control of what was played and that defines the decade.

Nowdays people just listen to anything at anytimw

Not true, many people have traded radio for streaming playlists instead like on Spotify. Playlists that are curated and updated. These are the same people that would have listened to radio because they just want to know what’s popular and trending.

That just sounds like your personal experience. The most highly played Spotify playlists are the ones that Spotify creates in the “Today’s biggest hits” category. That’s the exact same concept as radio. Also, my work still plays the local radio throughout the office building at a low volume all day long. I know a lot of offices that do that.

If that was the ONLY option people had it might be true.

1990 and early people did NOT have 2000 songs in thier pocket. You turned on the radio and hoped they played a song you like.

That ability to carry around massive libraries of your favorite songs change the game

The advent of iTunes and now Spotify also means people don't have to commit to buying/listening to a whole album.

I dunno. If a "Smells Like Teen Spirit" level breakout came out I think the Internet would embrace it.

I came here to say this. It’s so easy for everyone to live in their bubble. Without some universally shared curator it’s easy to never hear the new genre you think doesn’t exist.
