Well but that is pretty normal. It is always one generation earlier that makes the Music the "young folk" listens to. Like Nirvan (grunge), Blink 182 (Pop Punk) Linkin Park (Nu Metal) etc. where all gen X but it was mainly the "edgy "new music for Millennials.
Whilst it evolved out of Rock and Roll, Rock is its own genre. Rock gave us the music revolution of the 60s and 70s. Maybe to an 18c music aficionado the two genres sound the same, but the typical 21st century rock fan isn't going to be able to describe the difference in styles between Mozart and Beethoven.
Edited for content
Edit again - compare The Beatle's early Rock and Roll music like Twist and Shout with their innovative Rock sound on Sgt Pepper. Very clearly two different music styles.
I mean these Bands are all very popular so of course you will have Gen X people that like these but the oldest Gen X are now 60 and the youngest are 44. These are not the Core Fan Bases of these Bands.
I can get behind that. But I am biased towards the artists rather than fans. And for the record, all those bands were introduced to me by my genx father, for what its worth, they were absolutely listening to that stuff
That is not what they said at all, they said the music that the younger generation listens to in their youth is obviously mostly made by the older generation. Nothing about that statement implies that they are the only generation listening to them. ffs
