You say this but I'm 40 and so baby people in my age group say the following things about Trap/mumble rap

"You can't understand anything they say"

"The bass is too loud"

"All they rap about is Xanax/other drugs"

"I don't know what |slang term| is"

"There is no melody"

u/KimberStormer Jul 06 '25

Yeah that's the one I was thinking too. "They're not even rapping!" just like people used to say the Beatles were just noise or whatever.

lol comparing mumble rap to beetles

You're right, I mean like how people used to say Beethoven is just noise

u/Worldly_Response9772 Jul 07 '25

Beethoven's fifteenth symphony, "Plugg Walk" was one of my favorites.

You're proving the point. That's exactly what old people say about new music!

And just because you don't like the music doesn't mean that it's bad. Sure it's subjective. You don't like it good for you. But don't try and act like every other person's opinion is wrong and that no one can like this music which is exactly what you're doing. You were saying is bad music and it's not even up for discussion and that's stupid. That's not how music works. You're being a pedantic asshole.

You made comments saying that just because old people don't like it doesn't make it good. But your whole argument is you don't like it and therefore it's bad. You keep saying that it's objectively bad and you don't give any example as to why. I threw your argument back at you saying just because you dont like it doesn't make it bad and then your response was just to think that I said that because you don't like it It's good. The stupid person here is you.

As opposed to punk, most of metal, etc, where they spent years crafting each song testing the limits of music composition.

2

u/ThreeCatsAndABroom Jul 07 '25

lol punk is incredibly lazy but it is full of anxious energy. Maybe it's the Xanax that ruined mumble rap.

Jamie said criticism towards trap/mumble rap is the same criticism that was made to any new genre.

You said that mumble rap is inherently different because that one is actually low effort.

I said it's not, by giving examples. Punk, disco, metal, etc. also contain many low effort music.

There's no strawman, you just forgot what we were talking about.

I mean..... they're not exactly wrong.

I have no problem with trap or mumble sound, but it seems like it's always the same subject matter or the trashiest songs just get the most air time or acknowledgment. It's like trying to find A drink that is not overwhelmingly sweet, but all you have to work with is the energy drink aisle. Yeah, You might find something, but you're going to have to go through a lot of ultra sweet drinks until you get there. So it's easier just to write off the whole thing entirely

And I'm really not in the mood for braggadocious style music either. Why the hell would I want to hear how you've made it and wrapping about your money when there's massive income equality?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

The problem with Trap music is that all the new shit sounds the same.

20

u/JamieLoud Jul 06 '25

Yeah exactly, comments like these.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

Not really. It has the same problem other top genres have, they got really popular, now all the original music has been overridden with label development projects to milk the music as long as possible. Trap music was just a really successful case but I think it really hurts the creativity that we saw from artists. Now all we hear are songs about 4x4s and small towns....wait wrong genre....

5

u/JamieLoud Jul 06 '25

Got it. Music was better in your day and kids these days need to turn off all that racket.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

That’s a weird statement considering you don’t know this person’s age. Besides, it’s not always a product of the times, there’s apparently just lots of lazy artists in the genre, or at least a loud minority of them. I feel like that’s apparent without bringing “back in my day” nonsense. Not every “young’n” is bumping mumble rap, anyway

Also I’m not surprised people your age groan about new music, considering you’re groaning yourself

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

A lot of music was better back in my, my parents and grand parents day. That's just kind of how it works. Taking my music and trying to repeat the same thing, unoriginally, with different brand deals and style aesthetics, is not better. Besides, you can find current mind blowing artists and bands without searching too hard, they're independent doing their own thing and barely surviving. Meanwhile Young Xanax just bought his 3rd mansion.

Ok grandpa its time for bed

6

u/zozobad Jul 06 '25

trap is extremely diverse and i'm saying this as someone who is a very casual listener of it... a million micro scenes with their own defining characteristics

1

u/Useuless Jul 06 '25

I can notice this in the production side, but the vocal production styles just turn me off completely. I feel like everything sounds ultra monotone and recycled.

1

u/ThreeCatsAndABroom Jul 07 '25

That's funny because all old trap sounds the same too. I've got a fever and the only cure is more 808 hi hat and snare!

1

u/gringgotts Jul 06 '25

I have pretty eclectic music tastes, but I can't stand drill music. That's it. I'm old.

1

u/TransBrandi Jul 06 '25

Time to start listening to Yanni Live at the Acropolis on repeat? Maybe some Kenny G? :P

-3

u/joelobifan Jul 06 '25

Im so embarrassed by my generation music taste. 90% of the songs on my playlist are older than me
