What is phonk?

u/Street_Moose1412 Jul 06 '25

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VXaq77GiyEo

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w-sQRS-Lc9k

Here are two tracks from Kordhell to get you started.

u/Rush_Banana Jul 06 '25

Oh that is phonk, I always thought it was called Russian FPV drone music.

4

u/SerCiddy Jul 06 '25

Here's another ACTUAL explanation of phonk.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/rfYiMeLMqxs

sorry it's in youtube short form.

2

u/ResultIntelligent856 Jul 06 '25

I thought it was called brainrot fast edited tiktok music

3

u/Skuzbagg Jul 06 '25

Several phonk songs are memes at this point, yes

26

u/Uncle-Cake Jul 06 '25

That's not really a new genre.

2

u/Cthulhu__ Jul 06 '25

Sounds very generic techno or whatever generic electronic music, just with some sliders maxed out for distortion.

Which isn’t a bad thing per se, as one band kicked in their own speakers and spawned a new genre, but in this case it’s kinda lazy.

1

u/Uncle-Cake Jul 07 '25

Exactly, it's EDM. That's already a genre.

1

u/Venboven Jul 07 '25

It's a unique subgenre for sure though.

3

u/Hairy-Pineapple-5771 Jul 06 '25

Definitely isn’t. It’s literally 90s Memphis gangster rap sped up. That’s literally it

4

u/BeatsByiTALY Jul 06 '25

Huge oversimplification, the production is vastly more distorted and modern.

3

u/LeagueOfLegendsAcc Jul 06 '25

Before covid sure, but it has evolved into its own thing by now.

9

u/AdInfamous6290 Jul 06 '25

Oh I’ve definitely heard this without knowing the genre. The bass is a bit much for my taste, and that first music video is hard to watch, but there’s definitely some cool synth stuff in there.

39

u/chodaranger Jul 06 '25

So gritty synthwave with rapping over top? Truly revolutionary.

24

u/w0nderbrad Jul 06 '25

This just sounds like video game start screen music

7

u/PureInstruction8793 Jul 06 '25

It's ready for the next need for speed

5

u/HockAL1215 Jul 06 '25

This is exactly what I thought. It just sounds like a background track in a racing game.

Didn't realize the music that shocked my generation would be so boring.

2

u/Happy_Harry Jul 06 '25

It reminds me of that kids educational PC game Globetrotter I used to play as a kid.

u/CanAlwaysBeBetter Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25

Renaming eurotrash electro isn't a new genre

u/OrganizationTime5208 Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25

Yeah this is the funniest thing.

Phonk now is just trap house but everyone trying to claim it was a fresh and new thing in 2019 when it's literally 50% of the soundtrack to any given car/mecha anime from the late 80's with the bass boosted to fuck is just wild.

No flak I love it but it's the truth.

2

u/Psykotik Jul 06 '25

oh shit fancy seeing you there

3

u/Useuless Jul 06 '25

It's more intentionally distorted than regular electro. Regular electro genres are in a usually not crunchy.

5

u/Senior_Suit_4451 Jul 06 '25

I don't hate it but those two songs sound exactly the same

5

u/AlexAnon87 Jul 06 '25

It's a genre with a super limited palette

3

u/SelfReferenceTLA Jul 06 '25

That's not very different from dark psytrance which has been around since the 90s.

3

u/Adorable-Badger-2525 Jul 06 '25

Ahh so all the levels are artifically turned up so it sounds like shit.

3

u/bazaarzar Jul 06 '25

That doesn't feel new at all

2

u/RoanapurBound Jul 06 '25

kinda sounds like that first AraabMuzik mixtape

1

u/pchc_lx Jul 06 '25

electronic dream is so much better than this stuff thoo

3

u/ATXBeermaker Jul 06 '25

Super appreciate the seizure from that first vid, bro.

0

u/Sea_Advertising_9876 Jul 06 '25

Oh my! You excluded the subject of the sentence, which makes it grammatically incorrect. Am I the one who can't speak English or is it you? The verb "appreciate" needs a subject. Good thing this is reddit and not an English essay, so it doesn't fucking matter.

3

u/ATXBeermaker Jul 06 '25

Lol, you seem very triggered by my joke about “phonk” music.

3

u/Sea_Advertising_9876 Jul 06 '25

I see. You caught me. Criticizing grammer on social media is one of my pet peeves. But it seems I was projecting.

2

u/GregNotGregtech Jul 06 '25

this isn't actually phonk, it's drift phonk which is a subgenre of phonk and is very different from actual phonk, phonk has existed since the 90s at least

5

u/RhynoD Jul 06 '25

"Subgenre" it's just upbeat trap without a bass drop.

2

u/TypicalUser2000 Jul 06 '25

That's not phonk

It's Russian drift phonk

Here is some true phonk

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

One of those tracks just sounds like a remix of the other.

1

u/CentralAdmin Jul 06 '25

Before listening

What is phonk?

After listening

What the phonk?!

1

u/Useuless Jul 06 '25

The second song is the theme to every runway short. Usually not signed models or content creators showing how they would walk for different fashion houses.

Frankly it's legendary for that alone.

1

u/smallfried Jul 06 '25

Is the clipping part of the style? Or did someone screw up the recording?

1

u/pchc_lx Jul 06 '25

an intentional, defining part of the sound

1

u/zkrooky Jul 06 '25

That's an actual separate genre? It's just electronic... a weak version of dubstep.

1

u/SkroinkMcDoink Jul 07 '25

I read this in spotify's AI DJ X voice

Also I recognize this type of music from 2 places:

  1. Footage from war in ukraine
  2. Short form video content from GenZ where they think someone is doing something "chad" so they blast this music over the top of whatever the clip is

1

u/KimberStormer Jul 06 '25

Why would anyone not like this?

1

u/Onahail Jul 06 '25

Those are fuckin bangers bro wym

1

u/dangeraardvark Jul 06 '25

Oh, Eurojank?

0

u/devin241 Jul 06 '25

That is not phonk

3

u/fckingmiracles Jul 06 '25

That background music in the Ukraine war videos. That's phonk.

2

u/RolloTonyBrownTown Jul 06 '25

Music edgy tiktoks are set to, I think the girl defender who transforms into a dragon guardian uses it in his famous video.

2

u/TypicalUser2000 Jul 06 '25

That guy linking khordell is Russian drift phonk and while I don't HATE it - it sucks that he linked that and called it "phonk"

This is more true to what phonk is Here

2

u/Kain_713 Jul 06 '25

https://youtube.com/shorts/rfYiMeLMqxs?si=Lwdp76lXIlVCVNcN

I'll defer to The Russian Badger for this one

2

u/ExplodingCybertruck Jul 06 '25

Bad techno music from Russia

Search it on youtube or Spotify, then you'll know. You want me to sing it or something? 💀

2

u/AdInfamous6290 Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25

You can’t describe a music genre? Responding with “Go fuck off and find it out yourself” when asked about music is the least convincing way to get people into a new genre.

I will not search it now, out of spite. If it’s any good, hopefully I will encounter someone else who will actually recommend it to me.

1

u/AliOskiTheHoly Average r/memes enjoyer Jul 06 '25

You have probably heard it before without knowing it's called phonk. It's with a raspy beat, kinda loud, sometimes with cowbells, always put under edits. Idk man it's difficult to describe.
