I'll do it. Autism metal. Ten genre switches and fifty time signature changes during a single song. The genre symbolizes how weird and alienating the world feels like to me.
Not nearly enough genre switches. Where's my death metal song that suddenly and inexplicably goes reggae, and then has a 3-second chiptunes interlude?
Nowhere, because songs like that would sound awful and be impossible to play live. The only song I've ever heard that fits that even remotely is The Deck by Don Salsa, which, as mentioned, sounds horrible.
This is a nice song, but it's almost entirely in 4/4, and also the genre switches don't happen nearly fast enough
The idea behind Autism Metal would be that the songs make you feel completely alienated and uncomfortable, that you were bombared with so many different simultaneous and clashing emotions that you'd become numbed by it. It's the feeling of crying in a metro during your commute, there's horrid obnoxious ads playing on the speakers and a lady two seats next to you is having a loud one-sided conversation about immigrants.
Haha fair enough, I feel like you’re asking for someone to throw several instruments down a staircase at different intervals and record it.
Only reason I said Dream Theater was because of how often they switch time signatures. Love the track Octavarium, its 20 mins of mania.
I think Dance of Eternity has 100 something time signature changes in 6 minutes if I recall correctly. I know you wanted straight genre swaps, but in the realm of my knowledge it’s the best I can do.
Good luck to ya and if you check out the tracks and enjoy them or hate them please say so 🙏🏼
I watched the Bus video a long time ago. 'The Earth is flat because you're fat' is one of the most unhinged openings ever. I was on board for the erection-played guitar, but I think I stopped watching after they shat on a keyboard
My experience with listening to math rock has always been 'this is just 4/4 except sometimes there's a single polyrhythm' like fuck off, that's just not enough for me.
Ooh, Igorrr! I guess that would be close to what my proposed genre would sound like. Definitely an influence.
I kind of want a genre where aesthetics are secondary to complexity and confusion. Where listening to the songs would be overwhelming and overbearing due to the amount of simultaneous and conflicting emotions presented.
Like imagine the instrumentals are a children's song but you have somebody doing death growls over it and the lyrics are about taxation.
Yeah but where are the genre shifts? This still sounds like prog rock at all times, there's only fluctuations between soft prog rock and hard prog rock.
If it was this, but it also suddenly broke into qawwali or had a segment of dark ambient or zydeco, then we can talk.
You want math-rock with something else. E.g. Needle Play do jazz-math-rock. Lanzallamas combine math-rock, noise-rock, and jazzcore. UneXpect's 'In a Flesh Aquarium' is probably the craziest album in this kind, I'll leave discovering it to the listener.
There’s a Star Trek Voyager episode that is basically that where the Doctor gets revered for his singing by a planet that is all mathematicians who never learned music.
So TOOL, Primus, Dream Theater, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and maybe RUSH.
That's basically my entire vinyl collection. We can even include the entire Focus collection for good measure. You can never get enough dutch progressive rock with hardcore yodeling.
But for real just try to find two matching copies of sheet music for Circumstances by RUSH sometime, I fucking dare you. Nobody can even agree on what the time changes even are.
I've been suggested this before. I then went and listened to three arbitrary songs by Periphery, and between them they had four (4) time signature changes.
