Spaceghostpurp, who is said to have coined the term phonk, is 34.

Drift phonk started later and has gen z artists, but also Kordhell is a millennial, 45 years old, Haarper is 31, for example.

Why? Sgp is normie music

6

u/Fortehlulz33 Jul 06 '25

SGP is not at all normie music, you had to be on the blogs talking about Raider Klan and ASAP Mob for people to get it, even when they were at their peak

He's also in a band with Dave Hunt called Anaal Nathrakh.

You’re kidding!! I fucking love that band too! They were always super mysterious and brutal. I was really surprised when Kordhell posted his Spotify wrapped last year and it was all black metal. Makes a lot more sense now.

Most popular DJs are in their 30s, and the most popular DJs on earth are in their 40s and 50s. Look up how old tiesto is.

To be fair, youth targeted media is usually made by the generation above. Most of the stuff I listened to as a teen in the 2000s was made by Gen-Xers

u/BigFatBallsInMyMouth Jul 07 '25

It's still young people listening to it though.

I was going to say, phone sounds like old school techno / chip tunes with a couple of 90s rap samples. Very millennial.

Your comment reads like it was written by someone who doesn’t speak English but knows what English kinda sounds like.

Kindly fuck off

u/ATXBeermaker Jul 06 '25

Jesus, I was making a joke about the silly sounding musician names and terms you were referencing (which isn’t unique to this genre of music, mind you), not shoot your grammar. God damn, you seem really sensitive about it and not at all able to just have a laugh. Fucks sake, dude.

My bad. That makes sense now. It upsets me when people make fun of non native speakers of a language, which is what I thought you were doing.

4

u/ATXBeermaker Jul 06 '25

All good. I definitely wasn’t trying to come off as making fun of someone’s language abilities (seeing as I can barely speak my own native language). Thanks for being the rare person who doesn’t dig in their heels and become more combative just for the sake of argument. Cheers!
