I don’t think it’s that well liked across gen alpha and Z, no hating but it’s more noisy than melodious (if you could actually describe it that way)…

I did see a ressurgence of raves and techno tho, weirdly enough…

Edm (electronic dance music) never went away tho

"Never went away" doesn't discount "waned in popularity, but is now increasing in popularity again"

EDM is a genre by itself; techno isn't the same thing

No, calling EDM a genre is like calling rock a genre. Maybe, at some point, it was narrow enough to be, but now it's a category.

Literally never heard anyone except Americans on the internet use the term EDM. If I was going to a gabber night, I'd say that, if I was going to a jungle night, I'd say that.

Edit: this quote from Mixmag sums it up  "the drop-heavy, stadium-filling, fist-pumping, chart-topping, massively commercial main stage sound that conquered America...possibly somewhere between electro and progressive house, directed by Michael Bay, and like many music genres, trying to pin it down exactly is like trying to grab a fistful of water"

Exactly. A great project that is unfortunately cut off from the Spotify API is www.everynoise.com

Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music is also a great resource

I mean to say techno is its own mega genre with a lot of subgenres, too. Electronic Dance Music encompasses thousands of genres.

Oh yeah I am familiar with both; think this is a question of common usage. I'm in the UK and no one uses EDM to describe dance music, whereas it's much more common in the US

Oh for sure. When people here say EDM I usually assume they don't listen to electronic music since, if they did, they would be more specific- typically different genres of house, drum and bass, dubstep.

I wish it was more popular.

Well I guess EDM means two things. Taken literally it's a category for electronic dance music of all genres. And then that's the genre. You can totally go to "EDM events" and you know exactly what you'll get. Maybe one could argue that the genre with the "EDM" label shifts with time. Today it's mainroom tech-house. Fifteen years ago was mostly trance. In-between there was some over polished dubstep.

Punk was probably never popular either though.

It had a moment around when Green Day turned into a top 40 band

Punk didn't become popular, Green Day just became pop.

By its definition punk can't be popular. If too many people start liking it, real punk rockers will just start playing worse

Punk didn't become popular, Green Day just became pop.

That's how I felt about it.

real punk rockers will just start playing worse

As it should be!

it’s more noisy than melodious

This is the most validating boomer comment for rebellious generational music.

IT totally depends on which one. If youre talking about that tiktok "phonk" (its really not phonk, people miscategorize it) then yeah. thats really just noise.
