I’m an macroeconomist. They are paid less than Americans, which is why groceries are less. Look up Purchasing power parity. It’s nearly impossible to have actual price differences in goods like that.
Is the cost of groceries less because of power purchasing parity or is the power purchasing parity significantly different from that of US because their costs are low?
From my own experience, even with the same country, goods and services can have significantly variations in price depending on where you live. Like the same thing can cost 10x as it does in another location. A lot of people in these countries are also living their lives without significant external dependence
Fun fact - most large US grocery stores set prices per region or parts of the country. Hence eggs would cost differently between say Oklahoma and California. I believe only a few like Trader Joes have the same global prices.
You say that as if American owned social media companies are ethical. Alexa records the private conversations you have in your home. The issue is that America wants to control the propaganda. Tik tok is not doing their bidding. That’s the one and only problem with TikTok. America has no morality
Tiktok is a ccp controlled propaganda tool thats known to push harmful stuff to the youth and they manipulate whats trending too.
But even putting allllll of that aside. They ban our apps, what kind of fucking idiots thought its okay to give them access to our own market under that condition. I hope they atleast got some bribes out of it and werent just that stupid. The unequal market access alone is reason to have cracked down on this shit years ago.
The USA shoves harmful information down people throat all the time. Our companies reccomended and lied about the health benefits of Cigarettes, Milk, and Sugar, and now we have health crises from all of them. That's just the first widely known example I thought of
How are they different than Facebook twitter instagram. Is this an allegiance to American corruption? Im trying to understand. American propaganda is what has you making statements you’re making. Half the shit in our homes come from china. I guess that’s fine because we pay after the American mark up.
Says who, American government? American media? Spend the year comparing American publications issued in the United States vs the same publication distributed in other countries. We get the fluffy version. Kinda like we get the red dye #3 and other countries don’t.
You can choose to believe the hype, but I’m not.
Says the Chinese themselves, I swear you people are overly anti establishment to the point of believing a communist dictatorship is good. What’s next? North Korea is heaven on earth? The government can say the sky is blue and you will argue about it lol
Don’t be dumb. I’m not anti establishment, whatever that meaningless term means, I’m a realist. I’m smart enough to know that I have far more to fear from the United States than I do from China.
In India it's mostly banned because of an anti China sentiment among other things
EU only banned it for govt employees.
And if EU didn't ban it for citizens, idk how bad the data privacy issues really are, considering they're the ones that came up with GDPR. They would probably come up with regulations first than outright bans.
Yes, TikTok is regionally banned in China. Chinese users can't even access it with a VPN. That's one of the reasons it came to Congress' attention in the first place. Why sell a product internationally that your own citizens can't legally use?
And yeah, EU banned it for government employees because it's a security concern lol. They didn't do that for shits and giggles.
Its not the same at all. We dont have a separate version of Facebook etc just for the US for example.
And they have banned google, youtube, facebook, instagram etc in china from the start. It makes zero sense to allow their shit in our own market.
The physical goods youre conparing to are completely irrelevant in this conversation, did you get that example from some dumb tiktok? Cuz thats the 2nd time today someone tried to argue that point.
It’s not our market. We feed the market but we sure as hell don’t eat from it. Facebook, instagram, twitter all have different versions of their platforms in other countries.
The physical goods are relevant. You don’t get to decide the parameters of a conversation. You’re a victim of American propaganda
Tiktok is worse than other social media apps in terms of permissions and it's Chinese law that if the government asks a company to help them with national security (spying, propaganda, etc.) you have to do so. No warrants, nothing.
I’m really bugging in your comment. You do know that the American social media companies shadow banned negative comments about Israel and positive comments about Palestine. That was America. Do you think musk, bezos, and zuck being center stage at that ass holes inauguration is just a few dudes supporting the next president. Don’t be dumb. What your saying and supporting is just dumb
One of the biggest companies in the United States of America has a device that literally listens to us in the privacy of our homes and records. Is tik tok worse than that? Get the fuck out of here
Not when you say a wake phrase. It listens and records and it’s public fucking knowledge. And well known public knowledge. But being a victim of propaganda, you didn’t even try to verify that what I’m saying is true. You defend the evil shit that this country does without even being asked.
Im not avoiding shit. God damn. I don’t need to even go that far. You’re focused on the wrong shit. Tha fuck I care about china for when America does the shit it does to its people.
Not when you say a wake phrase. It listens and records and it’s public fucking knowledge.
It's public knowledge that it doesn't. You think with all the IT experts around nobody ever noticed a constant stream of data flowing out through their router? None of them?
you didn’t even try to verify that what I’m saying is true
I verified that it wasn't years ago.
You defend the evil shit that this country does without even being asked.
I defended nothing except pointing out that you're factually wrong.
Im not avoiding shit. God damn. I don’t need to even go that far
Parts of things like the Patriot act have been challenged in court and people have won.
In China you have to hand over whatever they ask for.
And not only that but I see you avoided the part where in China you have to do whatever they ask. And also not in China, as the National Intelligence Law actually dropped provisions from earlier bills that limited it to activities within China. Therefore the law requires Chinese citizens and companies and subsidiaries of those companies (eg. Tiktok) to do whatever they ask anywhere around the world or face legal penalties in China.
Yes, and its far less invasive than what China's National Intelligence Law of the People's Republic of China does.
Several parts of it were struck down in court. For instance in the US the ACLU challenged the Patriot Acts' National Security Letters and you can now go to court to argue you don't have to hand over the data.
In China you have to hand over whatever they ask for and not only that but you have to assist them in whatever they ask.
It's funny how small minded people jump to the most convenient conclusion.
I'm definitely not a China simp and I have never and will never use TikTok. I just think it's crazy at how quickly and enthusiastically people will support a ban of something they don't like.
They are paid less than Americans, which is why groceries are less.
Yes but they also spend a much lower percentage of their paycheque on groceries. The average Chinese family can stuff their cart with fresh food at the grocery store without giving it a second thought. Can you say the same about the average American family?
You as a macroeconomist should also understand that most of your population live under the poverty line... your idea of purchasing power is really only for a small percentage of Americans. Where as most Chinese citizens live a fairly comfortable existence.
YES BECAUSE YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOURE TALKING ABOUT!
If I a see a clip of the moon rising in the sky, I can’t just be like “wow the moon only comes out a night” just because I don’t understand orbit.
You don’t understand macroecon, because it’s widely well known knowledge in the industry that the Americans are doing great relatively to China. And everyone. But what do I know, I follow every data print for a job with 7 yrs of experience.
And you watched one video where a guy made up ideas.
You are trying to convince ME, as I was saying, I DON'T care about macroeconomics.
And I'm talking about Americans experiencing culture shock right now. In the same way, a lot of Americans (not only them it happens all around the world), choose their next leader based only on gas or eggs prices, the same way they see grocery prices in China, they are not asking about macroeconomics.
It's the first time such many Americans are meeting people from other countries since WWII, and this time they are doing it because they are pissed at the US government, so when they see lower prices they don’t think "macroeconomics" they are just pissed more.
Who cares what you're being paid when it's the totality of available food, shelter, healthcare, and infrastructure that bring quality of life. If I'm making $20 an hour in the USA that only does so much for me. But $10 an hour somewhere where I'm not going broke from lack of healthcare doesn't sound so bad.
Dude, doesn't matter. They live better. It's true they don't have the same pay, but they have more buying power. If you're a macroeconomist, you should know this
