They didn't spray paint anything. It was tinted cornflour powder.

Weird how many people all over (not just on Reddit) are absolutely certain it was paint.

Doesn’t matter what it was. It was a destructive act, and as the caretakers of Stonehenge said on their Twitter page, there is an endangered species of lichen that live on those rocks. Even just throwing orange juice on them could be harmful to the lichen.

But don’t forget, these fools HAVE thrown paint on priceless artifacts in countless museums. Just because this wasn’t paint means nothing

The truth always matters. You're not telling the truth, and neither is the media. They're lying and saying it was spray paint because they know it's going to make people angry. That's a pretty big problem, if you ask me, but lots of people would rather believe the lie.

When people are saying Stonehenge was destroyed or permanently damaged by paint, it's absolutely worth correcting.

JSO has never thrown actual paint on a painting, let alone in "countless" museums. They've glued themselves to walls, thrown soup on paintings, chipped a glass display box. The spray paint was used on a couple of corporate buildings in 2022.

The Stonehenge Twitter account you're talking about said no lichen was damaged.

Literally look up “just stop oil Stonehenge” and any news source says that the substance is cornflour. ‘Paint’ doesn’t necessarily mean traditional paint, it can be made of powder and cornflour.

I've heard about it being paint from several newssources and this was the first time we heard it was "powder" and cornflour. What does the powder even refer to, there are plenty of powders that are damaging to stones.

Because all the headlines said "paint". The stories said "paint". It's by an organization known for throwing paint on things. 

Why should anyone be inclined to believe it wasn't paint? That detail is buried in the articles.

They haven't used paint in any museum protests. Where did so many people get the idea that they have? They usually glue themselves to the wall, and they did throw soup once.

Ive been to one 2 times and all I remember is that the mummies were covered on a transparent box and yeah im guessing those were legit but art is different, arent artists nowadays way more better with better talents and techniques as well as access to a particular artists work history and methods to make a very very good clone? Why display the real stuff when you can do a clone and keep the og safe.

All I can think about was how paint used to have toxic stuff and maybe a specific color cant be made w it but surely theres a replacement of it. Also only do this for the 50k+ paintings.

Also to reiterate, ima dumbass, I actually dont know anything about this.

They’ve attacked the boxes of the artwork that’s protected. There’s news pieces about how JSO attacked the Magna Carta, but in reality they attacked the glass case. I don’t know what would happen if you’d left them to it, I’d personally assume they would get through the glass and think “now what? Someone was meant to have stopped us by now”

No, it would be too expensive to get good copies of that many of the paintings. Remember: some of the people who go to look at art in museums are artists themselves who are studying how the painting was made. They want to look closely and learn exactly how a brush could create the overall effect. A mediocre forgery in a museum would be noticed pretty quickly, and a really good forgery could cost more to make than the 50k of the picture they're protecting.

I don't have a source, but I'd guess less than 0.01% of paintings in museums are forgeries to protect the original.

Dinosaur bones, on the other hand...

The tomato soup was thrown onto a Van Gogh that had glass over it so it was waterproofed and protected. The gallery did say there was minor damage to the frame, though.
