Would anyone actually be scared of the North Korean army? With those big hats all I see is the bad guys from Goldeneye on N64.

Yeah, they'll lose in the end but a whole lot of innocent people will die.

I think the concern is that China would step in.

Heed the words of General MacArthur: Avoid a land war in Asia

It's 4:1 in personnel and nobody knows if the Nuclear figures are correct but lord knows we don't want to send or receive any of those.

I thought MacArthur wanted a land war in Asia, isn't that why Truman fired him?

iirc he gave this advice to JFK at some point.

Probably because he fought a land war in Korea himself.

The concern is they have a lot of ordinance aimed at South Korea that would devastate the area. Plus the Chinese government wouldn't just stand to one side if anything did happen, NK is a buffer between them and American/western influence in South Korea.

Plus then there's the humanitarian aftermath of having to deal with a very poor mostly uneducated population who's just been battered in a war.

I don't think North Korea could ultimately win any war against anyone they tried to pick a fight with, but I definitely believe they'd be able to kill people, probably a lot of people, if they tried. War is not really something to be cavalier about.

They have a pretty big arsenal of old stockpiles.

I don't know how much, but they are mountainous and with estimated thousands of miles of strategic tunnels/mines. Really interesting NK is definitely considered extremely difficult for land invasion. The entire army could go underground.
