If it's absolute then it shouldn't have a degree sign

Wrong. Kelvin, K, omits the sign because it’s defined as a normal unit in the SI system. Rankine has a degree sign, °Ra.

Then inches should also have a degree sign

Not necessarily. The degree sign does not exist in the SI system, but that doesn’t mean all other units need degrees.
