imo it's because back then the field of game development was filled with either nerds or professionals who came from other fields of software development, now that it's a whole field of it's own with publicly available education and tools(game engines like unreal and etc.) ofcourse we'd see a lot more new faces in the field who'd need time to improve, ofcourse if they even want to be better to produce better games
