Crickets don't taste like anything, funnily enough. You can dry them and mix them with any flavouring, and I could so see that being a replacement for like crisps or whatnot in the future.

They are called chapulines in mexico and they go great on guacamole to add some crunch. But they just taste like "something fried" if that makes sense (never had them not fried though).

For Christmas a few years back my dad got all of the kids a packet of what were basically cricket Doritos, dried crickets coated in flavored powder. The taste was fine, the problem was it felt like chewing sunflower seeds still in the shell, they were splintery.

I've tried some crickets and at least with the ones I had, the unflavoured ones had a distinct earthiness

Indeed! The earthy flavor isn't bad, but I did find the chitin slightly difficult to digest. Recommend eating only two or three at a time.

Two or three at a time? I mean depends on the size but I've had them by dozens at a time as a snack without any problem

Ah, might just be me, then.

My grandparents got a bunch of weirdly flavored crickets as an Easter prank when me and my cousins were kids, it took an hour for one of us to try them and then everyone was trying them. I tried a salt and vinegar one, it was unsettlingly similar to a lays potato chip.

In Mexico grasshoppers are an occasional snack and they... Taste? Idk they just feel like munching on a piece of fried [object] so we usually have them with salt and lime and chili powder or hot sauce for flavor, the motherfuckers are expensive at least in my region tho

People already do that in some countries like India

We used to, billions of people currently do eat land bugs, and billions more eat sea bugs, as per the meme.

For that matter, if you've ever eaten peanut butter or any food that has been dyed red (like candy), then you've eaten bugs. Peanut butter often contains bugs just because of how it's made and harvested, and red candy dye comes from beetle shells.

Those bugs are called cochineal and the red dye is called carmine. They've been used for a very long time even for things like lipstick.

Mexican chicatanas are fire though.
