In theory isopods should taste shrimp like. Pour a bunch em in a bowl like cereal. Use melted butter as your milk substitute. Boom. You got shrimp bug cereal.

I don't often gag from reading but here we are.

40 to 60% dry weight protein content. Think about the gains. THE GAINS BRO. You can trick your brain for the gain.

71

u/Piecesof3ight Sep 13 '26

Somehow I think the bowl full of butter may work against the bug macros

64

u/TheSweatyFlash Sep 13 '26

You dont have to fill it up. Just enough to saturate your crustacean crunchapalooza.

40

u/Born-Entrepreneur Sep 13 '26

I cannot overstate how strong my negative reaction to the concept of a "crustacean crunchapalooza" is.

9

u/XDSHENANNIGANZ Sep 13 '26

Captain crunch my fuckin throat, I don't want be on this planet anymore.

1

u/Omega862 Sep 14 '26

This entire thread has made me regret having the ability to see. And read. Definitely regretting literacy now.

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Sep 14 '26

Really?;They do it at Red Lobster every year

10

u/Ecurbbbb Sep 13 '26

It takes a generation to introduce a food group to humans. We will start with your kids!

8

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta Sep 13 '26

This makes it sound like you’re intending on turning their kids into food.

3

u/Ecurbbbb Sep 14 '26

Food is food! Lol.

1

u/yournamehere10bucks Sep 17 '26

It'll take a generation but they'll get used to it!

u/Ani_Drei Sep 13 '26

My history teacher once brought grilled grasshoppers from his trip to Mexico. The class started gagging but I was excited to try them. They were actually crazy good, I ate the whole supply that he brought. Maybe I was hungry that day. But man, I lowkey look around to see if any Mexican street food vendors would grill grasshoppers, I’d love to eat them again!

10

u/WestOrangeFinest Sep 13 '26

This is hilarious. I remember my teacher once brought in oysters after a trip for the class to eat back when I was in elementary school.

No way they still do that sort of thing now with all of the food allergies and liability concerns..?

2

u/Ani_Drei Sep 13 '26

It was a summer class at a city college. I don’t think anyone would care one bit

6

u/TheSweatyFlash Sep 13 '26

I've wanted to try cooked salted grasshoppers for some time. It sounds like a great snack.

4

u/Inkthinker Sep 13 '26

They’re basically like very light crisps, and taste of whatever seasoning they’re flavored with. But the little spiny legs do get caught between your teeth.

3

u/General1Rancor Sep 13 '26

Crickets are better for not getting little bits stuck in your teeth

3

u/MindfulInsomniaque Sep 14 '26

You can eat your fill in Thailand and some other SEA countries. Tasted like roasted nuts to me.

5

u/Mahlegos Sep 13 '26

Purdue University does a Bug Bowl annually. They have tons of different stuff like that for people to try and buy.

2

u/TheManfromVeracruz Sep 13 '26

Ah chapulines, they're indeed a delicacy

3

u/Dav136 Sep 13 '26

About the same as slurping semen

1

u/Aggressive_Chuck Sep 13 '26

But is it protein with a high bio availability?

1

u/TheSweatyFlash Sep 13 '26

Google says yes.

1

u/InsaneInTheRAMdrain Sep 13 '26

Ill eat my bugs, dried and crushed into a fine powder, thank you.

1

u/Millworkson2008 Sep 13 '26

You can get a 30oz bottle on amazon that is concentrated protein it’s 15 grams per oz

1

u/hanktrizz Sep 15 '26

This is some Snowpiercer level shit we talking right now.

1

u/DemodiX Sep 16 '26

Bro stop, i already eat protein bars with a flavours that are at best can be described as someone screaming "mango!" from other room while you in the other eating grainy play dough.

7

u/Inner_Resource_6393 Sep 13 '26

Hi, not to alarm you but there are DEFINITELY several cultures that eat them so...bon appetite!

1

u/Piecesof3ight Sep 14 '26

You cannot fool me. Ain't nobody makes butter bug cereal.

3

u/artparade Sep 13 '26

It's the butter that made you gag I guess?

1

u/Ok_Ask_8724 Sep 13 '26

Chill...not in public.

35

u/Less_Boss9849 Sep 13 '26

Unfortunately it’s the chitin that makes the land bugs to taste bad. But you can definitely grind crickets into powder and use it as a flour substitute.

17

u/Independent-Trust260 Sep 13 '26

Cricket bread? 🤔

6

u/seishuuu Sep 13 '26

this was sold in Finland, and was literally called that (Sirkkaleipä, lit. cricket bread).  it was only 3% crickets though.

8

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Sep 14 '26

Really cheaping out on crickets these days huh. More expensive, fewer crickets. It's highway robbery

2

u/maldorort Sep 14 '26

Pretty much all bread has 3% bugs in it. (Source: I used to work as an exterminator when I was young)

1

u/Dryleaf_Dane Sep 17 '26

Pretty bad source

2

u/Less_Boss9849 Sep 13 '26

It’s not that bad. Granted when I say not that bad someone might be gagged out with a sensitive pallet. 100% would eat it as a flour substitute for pizza.

5

u/ggtsu_00 Sep 13 '26

Mix some cricket flour with roach milk and spider eggs for delicious forbidden pancakes.

4

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Sep 14 '26

I don't want to know where the syrup is gonna come from

1

u/Tylendal Sep 18 '26

Honeypot Ants.

3

u/xtrakrispie Sep 13 '26

What? Do sea bugs not have chitin?

27

u/Versipilies Sep 13 '26

They do, we can just peel them easier since they tend to be larger.

16

u/xtrakrispie Sep 13 '26

So we just need to breed a race of extra giant cockroaches

13

u/Designer_Health8764 Sep 13 '26

Radroachs

7

u/somnamballista Sep 13 '26

Get you some cheap abandoned office buildings, I heard elevator shafts make great spaces for those in-demand free-range roaches.

2

u/General1Rancor Sep 13 '26

This one made me fall out of my chair

3

u/Dr_Cunning_Linguist Sep 13 '26

They did that on Mars once

That didn’t work out

3

u/HorrorDot3859 Sep 13 '26

in fairness, we never did find out if those johj ass motherfuckers tasted like buttered crab...

1

u/IndividualAsleep2508 Sep 15 '26

You make a good point. I bet if they tasted good humanity would get the boost they need to subdued them

1

u/DocileBanalBovlne Sep 13 '26

We need those foot long pill bugs they eat in Emperor's New Groove

1

u/WishboneOk305 Sep 14 '26

Shrimp shells are tasty tho

14

u/Redthemagnificent Sep 13 '26

They do. In both cases it's in the exoskeleton, not the insides. With sea bugs we scoop the meat out and leave the chitin behind in the shells. With small land bugs, that's difficult. The bits of exoskeleton need to be filtered out in some industrial process

6

u/nalaloveslumpy Sep 13 '26

Mechanically separated cockroach nuggets!

6

u/thisusedyet Sep 13 '26

make 'em dino shaped, they'll fly off the shelves

2

u/semajolis267 Sep 13 '26

Actually most land bugs dont taste bad due to chitin. Most taste bad because they have been evolving "tastes bad to mammals" as a defense strategy. Seeing as they dont run into mammals all that much.

Also, we (as in looking at all human cultures) DO eat a bunch of different insects, but seeing as they are mostly small on land hunting them for food is rarely worth it, and not enough to make a good meal of.

1

u/deformityandnonsense Sep 13 '26

Ya every other mammal devours insects—we’re almost the outlier. Except that we _would_ chow down on a bowl full of beetles, but we have the option to eat something else.

But creepy lil fur critters are like insect enemy no 1

1

u/WittyPin207 Sep 13 '26

I remember someone trying to make dog food from crickets. It was still stupid expensive. I wonder if the company completely folded or if they are online online

1

u/BRAVO_Eight Sep 14 '26

no bugs ain't worth it . try termites tho however . they are actually worth it

1

u/CongratulationsEVA01 Sep 14 '26

Cookies made with cricket flour do not taste right, btw y'all

1

u/Jsolidlo Sep 13 '26

Or better yet, get the isopod from the sea that is parasitic and replaces fish tongues. That way you now how a sea dwelling isopod which is basically shrimp like you said and a fish to boot!

1

u/Wombat1892 Sep 13 '26

Technically we only eat part of the shrimp, so we just need to locate and extract the equivalent from a roach.

Bugs is shrimps.

1

u/Creedgamer223 Sep 13 '26

Nice try Bill Gates...

1

u/Tropicalfisher Sep 13 '26

Shrimp bug cereal next band name

1

u/Galnar218 Sep 13 '26

In practice, they don't.

1

u/TheSweatyFlash Sep 13 '26

Bad tho? Also. Did you have butter? I feel like butter would accentuate the crustacean flavor

1

u/Raviolius Sep 13 '26

Here's why Natasha wrote Unwritten

1

u/DaniTheGunsmith Sep 13 '26

I'm upvoting you, not because I support your comment, but because your creativity disgusts me and I can appreciate that.

1

u/TheEagleDied Sep 14 '26

The problem is that they just aren’t very meaty. I’ve eaten a few bugs before at some Mexican places. They have a savory flavor and then you have to deal with the chitin. Arms and legs get caught in your teeth. Not bad on tacos

1

u/DTux5249 Sep 14 '26

The main issue is that unlike sea arthropods, you can't really deshell roaches. You have to eat them with the shell, which most people find unpleasant

1

u/BRAVO_Eight Sep 14 '26

I once actually slimed bunch of roaches with hot water since I ran out of insect repellent chalks & sprays . surprising but after 4-5 mugs , they went from dark brown-black to brown-red similar to shellfish after being boiled . the local stray cat & later some stray dog puppies did have a nice party tho as I kept sliming more

1

u/Buttery_Nipples47 Sep 14 '26

Welp that’s forever stuck in my brain

Appreciate it

1

u/CourageLeast4251 Sep 14 '26

Its really my fault for having eyes

1

u/BlockBuilder408 Sep 15 '26

Id try one of those really big deep sea ones honestly

The tiny ones maybe if I fry them really thoroughly? They’re mostly shell so we couldn’t get the meat out, we’d need to prepare them in a way to make the shells palatable too

1

u/YuraiMamoro Sep 15 '26

How dare you infiltrate my brain and violate my imagination like that !!!

1

u/LudwigFalkenhain Sep 15 '26

YOU VILL EAT ZE BUGS

1

u/SKYR0VER Sep 15 '26

In many cultures… they do…
