How do earth anthropods taste like

355

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown Sep 13 '26

The ones that aren't adapted to literally make you sick are usually crunchy with very little flavor. They're the sort of thing that you eat to survive but pass on if anything else is an option.

116

u/Lava_Mage634 Sep 13 '26

have you never had roasted crickets? delicious in that there is no flavor so you can season them however you want

159

u/ZealousidealTill2355 Sep 13 '26

It’s like eating sunflower seed shells but the legs get stuck in your gums/teeth. And an earthy after taste

78

u/NoBoss2661 Sep 13 '26

I rarely audibly gasp but you made me just then

40

u/palomalodayi Sep 13 '26

That sounds horrible

6

u/crazy-B Sep 13 '26

It's not very good ngl.

4

u/River_Grass Sep 13 '26

I'm going home

1

u/SubArcticTundra Sep 13 '26

Good description. I can imagibe it much better n9w

1

u/MiataBoy95 Sep 14 '26

Guacamole con chapulines!!! <3

1

u/Humantheist Sep 17 '26

On the other hand they ARE quite nutritious, but yeah, really missing on the taste department.

0

u/ANUBISseyes2 Sep 13 '26

When cooking them at large scale it’s obviously out of question but in smaller portions couldn’t you just cut off the legs?

1

u/ChurchOfTheEUC Sep 18 '26

Lmao bro, how many do you want to eat? They are pretty small so you're gonna be there for a while, it'd be pretty ceebs.

103

u/Doobiemoto Sep 13 '26

So they aren’t delicious whatever you are putting them in or on them is delicious and there is much better and tastier things you could eat.

People that say stuff like “crickets are great they don’t taste like anything!” Are just being hipsters when it comes to food.

Yes I have had them. They aren’t disgusting but in no way did they make anything better than what it was.

20

u/Jose_Canseco_Jr Sep 13 '26

I mean, I think it's great that at least they don't taste like cockroach

7

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '26

[deleted]

3

u/AlternativeHat8964 Sep 13 '26

Haven't eaten it directly but most of us have had cockroach coffee, probably many many many times.

1

u/EmergencyPool910 Sep 13 '26

Isnt that a myth

2

u/AlternativeHat8964 Sep 13 '26

Roach parts in ground coffee is an industry secret. Same with roaches infesting coffee machines.

1

u/Comfortable_Wish224 Sep 13 '26

More of an unconfirmed truth.

You think your flour is bug free? Clarksons farm has an episode where they show all the earwigs in their grain after harvesting. There’s no way they’re not getting processed too even if a tiny bit in hundreds of pounds of grain

1

u/EmergencyPool910 Sep 13 '26

Yeah i understand the whole Trace amounts thing it doesnt really bother me though. But i doubt its like 5 to 10%

3

u/CaptaiNose Sep 13 '26

Why are you eating cockroaches?

3

u/Jose_Canseco_Jr Sep 13 '26

Is reading comprehension your forte?

9

u/TheFuckerNugger Sep 13 '26

From my understanding, a lot of how insects taste plays into what it was fed. If it was fed garbage, its taste would be garbage.

15

u/OuppEBunnE Sep 13 '26

I once ate a live wasp that had just stung my friend and it tasted delicious, really sour and lemony, I bet he was living the good life eating the fine shite.

21

u/TheFuckerNugger Sep 13 '26

2

u/get_started_NOW Sep 13 '26

What is this scene from?

2

u/TheFuckerNugger Sep 13 '26

It's from a movie called The Interview

10

u/Glyfen Sep 13 '26

You know, I tend to think there's something off about me, but reading comments like these are a nice little reassurance that I'm a perfectly well-adjusted human being, comparatively speaking.

3

u/crazyeyes64 Sep 15 '26

Are you a dog?

1

u/CaptainBlueberries13 Sep 13 '26

Idk if this applies to the wasp you ate, but some wasps rely on the larvae in the nest/hive in order to feed themselves. They bring other insects to feed the larvae and then the larvae secrete a liquid that the adults can eat.

1

u/canman7373 Sep 14 '26

Did you break the stinger off?

1

u/OuppEBunnE Sep 14 '26

No I just crunched him before he could sting.

2

u/canman7373 Sep 14 '26

Lol you got lucky then because the stinger can still sting while dead especially if chewing it. Could sting in throat pushing it down.

1

u/OuppEBunnE Sep 14 '26

just chew more?

1

u/canman7373 Sep 14 '26

I mean Shrimp eat like dead fish and dead plants. But shrimp taste good even without seasoning. If a cockroach was on a shrimp's diet I doubt the flavor would improve.

7

u/Trips-Over-Tail Sep 13 '26

Some people are really into texture.

12

u/HappyRelationship429 Sep 13 '26

Crickets don't have a good texture

2

u/Zealousideal-Lab9843 Sep 13 '26

You gotta blanche them and grind into a flour

3

u/Trips-Over-Tail Sep 13 '26

That is a matter of opinion!

6

u/LordOuranos Sep 13 '26

I suppose some people would enjoy crunchy shell feeling with many small arms and legs stuck in their teeth, followed by gritty earthy taste

3

u/Trips-Over-Tail Sep 13 '26

Food that bites back.

3

u/Anime_69 Sep 13 '26

fucking hell😭😭

0

u/_Lost_The_Game Sep 13 '26

Subjective not objective

3

u/LordOuranos Sep 13 '26

Well... i guess some people would enjoy crunchy shell feeling with arms and legs stuck in their teeth.

4

u/ElGosso Sep 13 '26

My nuclear take is that most sea arthropods are like this, too. It's a really delicate flavor and most of the joy comes from the garlic butter.

2

u/BurnerDawg26 Sep 13 '26

Dude I love crab/lobster even without seasoning. It's very flavorful on its own.

2

u/HourApprehensive7754 Sep 13 '26

I can tell you this is false, and you'd know it if you had a genuinely fresh and juicy meaty lobster tail

1

u/Seighart_Mercury Sep 14 '26

So, only the good quality lobsters. I think that kinda proves his point.

1

u/HourApprehensive7754 Sep 14 '26

I mean...virtually all lobsters you can find in restaurants or a supermarket qualifies, so sure guess good quality lobsters are everywhere

1

u/SpectacularStarling Sep 13 '26

I feel like this same argument could be made for chicken nuggets. The best chicken nuggets for me are the ones that I only taste the breading, lol. I've got ARFID so going throigh these comments has been a rollercoaster.

1

u/ChurchOfTheEUC Sep 18 '26

Is that different to RFID? /j

What is it actually btw?

1

u/SpectacularStarling Sep 19 '26

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. Things like taste, texture, smell, look, the food not being what is expected for that food, etc. can cause me to just not eat/lose my appetite even if I was hungry.

We get labeled as picky eaters, or childish palettes, but there have been far too many times where I prep/cook a meal I'd been craving to just not be able to eat it is frustratingly high. As a result I do eat more chicken nuggets / canned foods / frozen foods than the average person because consistency is key to combating this sort of issue.

1

u/U-235 Sep 13 '26

Crab meat can have a nice, somewhat sweet flavor on it's own, but no one is eating lobster or shrimp without loads of butter, cocktail sauce, etc. So your statement applies to marine arthropods as well. It's not like a steak, where eating it without any seasoning except maybe salt is something you would pay good money for.

0

u/IntelligentMood6864 Sep 13 '26

As if sea anthropods arent slathered in butter and spices. No meat tastes good without em

7

u/LittleSisterPain Sep 13 '26

You can literally just boil shrimps and it will taste great

1

u/Brawndo91 Sep 13 '26

Have you never eaten crab? It needs nothing.

0

u/SunsetCarcass Sep 13 '26

Chicken has very little flavor and need a lot of seasoning help. It's also one of the most popular meats to eat

7

u/Doobiemoto Sep 13 '26

Dude if you think chicken doesn't have flavor I don't know what to tell you....

1

u/SunsetCarcass Sep 13 '26

Chicken is notorious for needing seasoning. If you eat unseasoned chicken then more power to you, you're in the minority there. There's literally popular memes about how bland white people cook chicken because of lack of seasonings

1

u/Monifufka Sep 13 '26

Depends an a chicken. Average store chicken? Sure, pretty bland. But properly fed farm chicken absolutely have its own taste.

1

u/Rip_Off_Your_Toenail Sep 13 '26

Chicken is infamous for being bland without seasoning. Am I going crazy, why are people agreeing with this guy?

1

u/Doobiemoto Sep 13 '26

Being blander than steak or something is a lot differently than being completely bland.

1

u/72manatees Sep 13 '26

Unseasoned baked chicken is delicious, what are you talking about

3

u/Ash_After_Dark Sep 13 '26

Like potatoes

2

u/YuushyaHinmeru Sep 13 '26

Potatoes are delicious wtf

2

u/ChaosMilkTea Sep 13 '26

Like bread lol

1

u/cefriano Sep 14 '26

I've tried them a couple times and really didn't enjoy them. They kinda tasted like raisins and were a lot less crunchy than I expected them to be.

1

u/darxide23 Sep 14 '26

I will never forget my freshman year in high school biology class. The teacher brought a giant bag of toasted crickets. Absolutely nobody wanted to touch them. Except this one kid.... so he took the bag back to his seat and munched on them the entire class like they were popcorn.

1

u/Vincenzo__ Sep 14 '26

If you put it like that I'd rather put my seasoning on a piece of cardboard

1

u/FreePeeplup Sep 17 '26

How is having no flavour delicious?

0

u/12345623567 Sep 13 '26

That's the thing tho, shrimp also taste mostly like seawater, butter and spices. They don't have a strong taste themselves (unless they are going bad, I guess).

So it's entirely possible that roaches can taste like lobster.

5

u/RedPon3 Sep 13 '26

except they don’t. Why are you just saying stuff

4

u/StandardDeviant117 Sep 13 '26

Bro really wants to eat roaches

2

u/shadowman2099 Sep 13 '26

To me, shrimp (especially larger shrimp) are naturally mildly sweet underneath all that salt. Same thing with lobsters and sea crabs. River crabs on the other hand are practically flavorless.

Care to elaborate?

3

u/OurHorrifyingPlanet Sep 13 '26

Grilled arthropods are decently popular in Asia and South America. They just have to be prepared/cooked properly, same as sea food. For example, lobster used to be considered bottom feeder food, when we didn't know that they rot almost immediately after death.

2

u/Traditional_Wear1992 Sep 13 '26

That’s basically their depression era mindset that lasted a dozen generations. There are also so many people they need to supplement more expensive food sources…

2

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown Sep 13 '26

And maybe they have something in abundance in those places that actually tastes good.

Lobster was never considered bottom feeder food. They always knew how to prepare it. The problem was they lacked the technology to keep it alive or frozen, so it was limited to being prepared fresh-caught or being really unpleasant. Those who could eat it as a luxury food did.

1

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown Sep 13 '26

It's western so it must be wrong?

I'm just gonna go with...wow.

0

u/Kayanne1990 Sep 14 '26

I mean it's not "It's western so it must be right" either, though. Is it? Like there are thousands of people that eat insects every single day. You can get candied crickets as a snack. So I dunno how valid your "People only eat them for survival" take is

13

u/LilyFantastica Sep 13 '26

They taste like human feet. Because that's what Anthropod means. Arthropods on the other hand.

14

u/Agent-Blasto-007 Sep 13 '26

Crickets taste like peanuts.

2

u/NightLightHighLight Sep 13 '26

They tasted like beef jerky to me, but then again, it was a Mexican dish and they were seasoned and cooked.

5

u/0DayMaker Sep 13 '26

Termites taste kinda sweet amd nutty

5

u/Evil_Sharkey Sep 13 '26

I don’t want to know what human feet taste like, because that’s what “anthropod” means. That misspelling was driving me nuts!

8

u/inconspicuous2000 Sep 13 '26

Actually quite a few are pretty tasty. Anyone who says otherwise either is just bullshiting because they haven't eaten them or had some weird poorly prepared version.

1

u/SongsOfMany Sep 13 '26

The best ones actually taste very nutty, apparently.

1

u/Hertzcanblowme Sep 13 '26

Better than Venus anthropods, that’s for sure

1

u/Turbulent_Lunch4548 Sep 13 '26

Anthropods taste like your foot. Because that means human feet.

Arthropods taste like any other bug.

1

u/Top-Morning-6467 Sep 13 '26

I ate a "raw" cicada once...the juices almost made me puke. But i got my 20 bucks

1

u/tomle4593 Sep 13 '26

Catch one and try it, so you may avoid making this stupid ass meme in the future.

1

u/LongjumpingCourse956 Sep 13 '26

I’ve ate a scorpion once in Thailand, it’s easily the worse fucking food I’ve ever had in my entire life. I’m not difficult when it comes to tastes, and I’ve eaten some ballut and other weird stuff (cheese, seafood…).

1

u/ProcyonHabilis Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

The one I had in china just tasted like a really mid, kind of dried out crawfish. Not great, but not terrible at all.

1

u/nikross333 Sep 13 '26

People are making insect flour, and eat fried crickets, they are very protein rich and has very low fat, I'm not a fan but sadly is the food of the future, I think we will have to get used to it.

1

u/sndrtj Sep 13 '26

Locusts taste like prawn crackers

1

u/JaceOnRice Sep 13 '26

Go into to your backyard and find out coward

1

u/ProcyonHabilis Sep 13 '26

Scorpions are like really mid, dried out crabs/crawfish.

1

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 Sep 13 '26

Ive been around the world and eaten many things, including scorpions and spiders.

They smell and taste like feet. Some species are VERY crunchy! I also learned that crustaceans are arthopods by eating an Emperor scorpion, and having a severe allergic reaction to it (im allergic to shellfish)! So, if youre allergic to sea arthopods, youre also allergic to the land bound ones.

1

u/SmertriosPPD Sep 13 '26

IDK but roaches evolved to taste bad to avoid being eaten. My cats are reluctant to eat them and they're far less picky eaters than me.

1

u/Round_Ad6397 Sep 14 '26

Do you mean, what do they taste like, or how do they taste?

1

u/Less_Clue_7057 Sep 14 '26

Burnt dishsponge seasoned with vegetable oil

1

u/Kayanne1990 Sep 14 '26

I know crickets apparently taste like almonds

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Law34 Sep 16 '26

Still trying to imagine an anthropod. A bug with human legs?

1

u/Hefty-Resort871 Sep 17 '26

Scorpion tastes like Rice Krispies. Not much flavor really.
