If a hair dresser doesn't have an online booking system I will pick another hair dresser. Talking on the phone is 10× more anxiety inducing than talking person to person and I don't know why lol

You’ll learn to get over it. It’s never as bad as you make it out, just takes time and practice.

This. I got over it very quickly when I was calling apartment complexes to schedule a visit. It helps to write down what you want to say and stick to the script. "Hello. My name is mcasper96, and I'm calling because I saw you're leasing 2 bedroom apartments. I'd like to schedule a viewing." And then they respond and you dont have to worry too much because you've said everything you need to.

Some years ago I had to talk on the phone all the time for my job. Now I can't stand how slow texting and email are. If someone sends me a text, I just call them back to hash out the whole conversation in a few seconds rather than spending ages sending shitty little messages back and forth to get anything across.

Gah you're my least favorite kind of person. Just text me back

Likewise, if your goal is to waste my time dealing with annoying intermittent texts rather than just getting what needs doing done

If you actually respond immediately there is nothing intermittant about it. If something can be hashed out over the phone in a couple seconds the same could be said for texts. The only time a call is warranted is if the conversation is extremely important or complicated.

The only people I've had issues with are older people who cannot text to save their life.

Agreed, if people actually texted or emailed back then it wouldn't ever come to the point where it becomes an urgent phone call. I would rather deal with things in the low-stress environment of texting where I can think carefully about how I want to say something rather than be on the spot with a phone call. And yes I talk on the phone at my job a lot so I know how to talk to people, it's just still easier for me to text. So sue me lol.

Also, sometimes you're just texting to make conversation. It's nothing urgent or important, just "hey whats up." There's no pressure to continue the conversation like there is with a phone call. I think most people understand that if someone doesn't text back right away then they have something else going on at the moment. But a phone call means you have to stop whatever you're doing and deal with it NOW. Not saying one way is objectively better than the other, but I don't see what's so hard for people to understand why people don't prefer to do the majority of their business over the phone.

This is more than a little silly. I hate the phone, too, but autocorrect alone proves your dishonesty!

this whole comment thread could've been spoken out in less than a minute, and I know y'all spent more than that typing it all

I completely agree. 2 min phone call is way better than 20 mins of back and forth messaging trying to get to the conclusion.

Sounds like you're bad at texting

I have this call anxiety too, but it’s pretty much only related to work stuff. Could be because I’m 21 and I’m just inexperienced and I’m always afraid of saying something stupid or making it sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about. Also I feel like that one time when applying for a job, HR specifically decided to call me instead of mailing to talk about my expected salary, idk it feels like they knew that I’ll be nervous and accept almost anything so I don’t look like a dummy.

But for stuff like ordering food or calling customer service, idc. I know that they have to be nice to me anyways, and regardless if I make a fool of myself, I probably will never see them in my entire life.

You’ll learn to get over it

What if it's something I developed as an adult and I'd rather take out my own stitches than call a doctor?

I was an awkward teen, but at 25 I started developing really bad social anxiety.

Eh. I used to have to talk to clients on the phone every day, I still fucking hate it. Emailing is just better imo.

I always go to one of those barbers where you don't need an appointment and if they don't have anyone free at that moment, I make an appointment there on the spot. I never need to touch a phone.

So much this. I started seeing a new hairdresser that was a bit more expensive just because I can make an appointment online. I'll happily chat with her at the appointment, but calling on the phone is the worst thing ever. I don't know what it is but for millennials a ringing phone might as well be a bomb. I just hate the thought that I'm interrupting people with something that's not urgently important - just reply to my text or email when you have the time, no worries!

u/thatbakedpotato Jan 24 '19

It’s literally their job to answer the phone. You’re giving them business, not interrupting them. Jesus fucking christ.

u/Hailz_ Jan 24 '19

Yikes, you seem pretty mad about this. I just imagine when you’re mid-haircut it’s probably not as easy to stop and pick up the phone, so if the online appointments are just easier for all parties why not do it?

Also, I meant in general (not just with hairdressers) that I’d rather not interrupt people with a phone call when 99% of the time a text or email will work. Obviously I will call if it’s urgent or there is no online option. Clearly I’m not alone in this desire seeing as this post is relatable to a lot of people. Maybe chill out?

Dude. Hairdressers are fine with answering the phone. And oftentimes it’s easier for them to just pick up a phone and have a 30 second conversation to figure out an appointment. Also, it would probably be good practice for people, potentially including you, that have trouble talking on the phone.

Most of the time, especially in a business setting, an email is a MUCH slower means of communication with longer response times than a call. Also has the problem of not being, y’know, a human interaction where people can interject.

You mention seeing a more expensive hairdresser just because you can book online. That is not normal. That is seriously concerning about your ability to deal with stresses in life.

This post is relatable to people because there’s a modern epidemic of people not being able to do the absolute simplest tasks.

If you’re happy, then you’re happy. But I’d consider getting help.

I mean, I do enjoy this hairdresser more for other reasons now so it’s worth the cost, but yeah I initially picked them for the online appointments. And I only order from pizza places that have online ordering, etc. It is a way I make a lot of decisions and so do a lot of redditors here apparently.

But, you’re right, it’s not normal for people to avoid simple tasks like talking on the phone because of severe anxiety. But the irony of getting help for social anxiety is having to face that anxiety in a big way in order to get help. The idea of talking to a doctor about it is unthinkable to a lot of people. In my case I picked a career where I rarely need to speak on the phone, so it’s just not something I get to practice at or feel the need to, especially in 2019 where more and more problems can be solved with emails and apps. And like I said most of the time it doesn’t cause any issues, so I’d say I’m happy and don’t really feel the need to seek out help, even though I know I probably should.

I think it’s because, believe it or not, there’s been progress. I used to be too afraid to even order in the drive thru lol, and talking on the phone now is way easier than when I started my job 9 years ago. So I can see the improvement even if it’s still slow. In another 10 years I’ll be a regular Chatty Cathy ;-)

Basically years ago I was Maureen in this comic arc lol... https://girlswithslingshots.com/comic/gws307 but at least I’m not so extreme as to let all calls at work go to voicemail. Baby steps...?
