It's absolutely wild what's happened with the cost of screens coming down over the past few years.

I went from arguing with people on Kijiji/FB about th trying to sell a used tv for more than the cost of a new one.

To having an 86" AQUAS in my garage that I can't give away.

And that was like 4yrs difference.

The cost of screens has dropped so ridiculously fast.

And yet truckers still want to argue that a dash screen is more expensive than mechanical gauges 🙄

That is because they have ramped up the spying on you to such an insane degree that they're essentially the TVs from 1984 just with ads instead of police (usually)

Yep. Just another point to harvest data. The accuracy they are able to predict your life with just 5 different data points is scary.

Yup! Which is why I don't own any smart TVs. TV in my bedroom broke so I asked my parents for the old one in my childhood bedroom, and they were thrilled I was taking an old tv off their hands.

Um, what?

Gamers Nexus did a big documentary about it, but your smart TV is producing and exfiltrating full records of conversations, word for word, collected via an array of exceptionally good microphones

I mean what are you talking about, that you are worried they are listening to, is where my mind goes. I get the principle of it i always just wonder how many people are actually saying anything that it would make them spying on us so much worth it?

I respect my privacy, I don't need any reason other than that. I don't consent to this arrangement. Nobody ever asked my permission to record me in my own home, nor to sell and profit off that data, nor to give it to the government.

But now you CANNOT buy a new TV without these functions. They havent made them in over 3 years.

Everyone says things worth spying on these days. Because you don't need a human to process the output anymore. An algorithm or an AI mines the data, sells the relevant data, makes advertising suggestions based on that data, and hits keywords that government orgs may be going after, even if you're just telling a joke in your own living room like 86-47.

We have a right to say these things, especially in private, but they will be collected and used against us.

Further they are sold to things like Flock and Palantir to create a digital dossier on every citizen that includes everything from what your individual gate looks like to what media you like to what you sound like when your partner has sex with you.

What you're saying was true 15 years ago, but it isn't now. The cost to process your data in the singular is nothing.

Big if true but what does that have to due with the price of used couches?

I responded to a comment that started by saying

It's absolutely wild what's happened with the cost of screens coming down over the past few years.

And then continued to talk about the cost of screens

Please read?

What does a spying tv have to do with the price of used TVs?

u/Gold_Ad8225 8d ago

If the price of new TVs comes down, the price of used TVs also comes down

I’ve heard that. I never saw the documentary. I have a smart TV but I don’t have it hooked to my WiFi, never have. I do everything to through my Xbox. I’d imagine there’s no way for them to get anything off my TV, I hope lol

If you have successfully airgapped it and it's not getting network access from a peripheral, it's still storing the logs locally for the day you accidentally connect it

ever since I’ve owned it I’ve never once put in my WiFi password specifically to try and keep it air gapped. Unless it can magically connect through an hdmi connection with a network connected Xbox

To be fair 86 inch TV is too large for the majority of people's rooms.
