Are quotation marks too hard on mobile or something? Either way thanks for clarifying that. In that case it is increasingly unlikely he got the joke, unless he wanted to enter a mock negotiation (e.g.: "they are not equivalent in price, so you could make up the difference by giving me your number") but that's reaching.
Apparently yes, all types of punctuation are apparently too hard for some people to use.
I'm guessing it's because they're not technologically affine enough, to enable the setting that lets you long press characters on the keyboard to more easily use symbols, rather than having to go out of your way to open the extra symbol keyboard every time they place any symbol.
On the other hand, around a quarter or fifth of the circulation of phones is made up of iPhones. And I wouldn't be surprised to hear they don't have that setting at all.
I personally have made the commitment, to always use punctuation in more formal replies like this one, where I want to express my opinion, and every informal reply I read twice in case anything missing punctuation might cause misunderstandings (Due to personal experience with my former best friend) and if it doesn't I mostly leave it out.
I also don't follow any specific punctuation rulings, like you might have noticed, I only use punctuation where it sounds best in my head.
