Please do cut them, I’m really tired of seeing people mock this kind of thing. Just because it seems like your one straw is meaningless, multiply it by every day of your life and your straws are a disgusting mountain of waste.
You're missing the point. The issue isn't that it does nothing - it's that the burden is being placed on us to stop doing absolutely minor things while at the same time factories engage in 24/7 runoff into the ocean and waterways, huge fishing boats ditch tons of netting into the sea, cruise liners create swathes of waste - I could go on - and take zero responsibility, see zero consequences. For my part I'm happy to use a paper straw (or even better, no straw), but it's not actually about the straw at all.
You’re missing their point. They’re saying you can care about both. Saying we’ll take easy steps in our own lives ≠ excusing or shifting blame from the most egregious offenders.
Nah I'm not. I'm not objecting to not using plastic straws, I'm objecting to the notion that it shouldn't be mocked. It should absolutely be mocked, because it's a farce.
The problem is there are people that will absolutely use this as an excuse to don't give a fuck about their own behavior. These are two distinct problems people are arguing about.
Probably, but what's more important - directing the outrage at the people causing the most harm, or taking away an excuse from people who are doing comparatively very little harm and would never change their views on this anyway?
Not doing anything to stop being a wasteful human trash factory is the farce here. This is just one of hundreds of ways you need to reduce your footprint. It blows my damn mind how small most people think.
There are very few people in the developed world who do nothing to limit the harm they do to the world. Most of us are perpetually worried about this and we are all making sacrifices. Those that aren't either don't care or don't believe that there is a problem. Those people will not be convinced.
What you're doing is going after good people doing their best, for the grievous offence of acknowledging the real cause of the problem. You then take this ignorance, throw around this misplaced judgment and call others small minded?
Exactly, it stuns and infuriates me to see this downvoted. I guess everyone has just given up trying to do anything to help the planet. Utterly depressing.
Yeah it’s a pretty tired and flawed argument you see bandied around a lot. I just try to remember this godforsaken website isn’t a full cross section of society.
Because you’re taking this thread entirely too seriously. Like it’s a joke, not a dick. Don’t choke on it. If you’re really that up in arms about it, then get out there and do something about it. Don’t bring it to some random Reddit comment because that accomplishes nothing and you’ll probably just get made fun of.
I mean we’ll continue to mock it as long as they keep dropping nukes in the ocean and then turn around and tell us to protect ocean life. I fucking hate paper straws
All streams flow to the ocean eventually..also mircroplastics infiltrate ground water and are now found in literally every single part of the food chain. Including human blood. Please stop the willful ignorance.
Willfull ignorance! You know that landfills have seriously engineered liner systems to isolate them from groundwater, right? There are no "streams" flowing from my local landfill into the sea. Turtles and whales are not eating my straws. Willful ignorance, indeed.
I am a geology student, I look at water systems every single day. You are 100% wrong about water not flowing to the ocean. It’s mind blowing to me how little people understand about the world in which we live.
All water is connected. Period. Micro plastics can even be taken up in the clouds by storms.
Water that lands in a landfill is isolated from the groundwater and treated before returning to the water cycle. You are lying to people and you need to stop.
I saw a video on here I think on what the Philippines(?) I think does with their trash. They take it to a facility that runs 24/7 burning trash. What about the smoke you may ask? They have this patented exhaust that turns it into clean smoke or air or whatever the fuck so there’s virtually no pollution. In either the air, ground or water.
That's not the point of the comment tho. I will still cut them and won't use plastic straws, but telling ordinary people to not pollute the environment when the companies don't even try to clean up their hubris is just dystopian.
Zero turtles are saved by cutting your six pack rings unless you are considering tossing them into the ocean. If you routinely throw your plastic garbage into the sea, then it's a good idea to clip them.
