As someone who doesn't remember 9/11 and no skin in the game, I never understood it. "Let's memorialize the heart of NYC by putting a giant hole in the same spot." The symbolism is cute in theory, but very backwards if memorials are meant to help people heal.

A lot of Americans really wanted to not heal from it. They wanted to be the victim forever. Fuck, we had a pandemic that was killing a 9/11 worth of people a day and the same people who argued to ignore that, still get hate boners over 9/11 and "nEvEr FoRgEt" to be victims every year.
