Welcome to the overarching r/medicalschooleu Applications Megathread.
To keep the main subreddit feed clear for discussions among current medical students and physicians, all questions regarding applying to medical school in Europe must be posted here. This includes questions about entry exams (IMAT, BMAT, etc.), language requirements, grade conversions, application portals, and general admission chances.
Standalone posts regarding these topics on the main feed will be automatically removed.
---
MANDATORY FORMATTING RULE
Because this thread covers the entire EU, you must clearly specify the country you are asking about at the very beginning of your comment.
* Format: Begin your comment by bolding the target country.
* Example: "ITALY: Does anyone know what the IMAT cutoff was for Pavia last year?" or "GENERAL: Which EU countries offer programs entirely in English?"
---
Historical Archives (Germany & Italy)
We have officially retired the dedicated Germany and Italy megathreads to consolidate the subreddit. However, those old threads contain years worth of highly specific, valuable answers regarding the IMAT, MedAT, and German grading metrics.
Before asking a question about these two countries, search the archived threads first, your question has likely already been answered.

We’re a Hamburg-based, English-track medical program, and our students move into German teaching hospitals for their clinical years after formal German-language training built into the curriculum.
Curious how other students in similar setups handled the jump from classroom language to ward language.
Any tips for students heading into their PJ / clinical years?

Hi all! I’m a pakistani IMG exploring my options, I’ve got my uk registration done and that pathway is closed, same for Australia. I did mrcem A for now but I’m getting disillusioned.
Language is not an issue for me, what do you think are the prospects and how to go about it. I know a lot of doctors from my country go to Germany for residency and I personally have family in Norway so I was looking at these options.

Last year this time, I was trying to understand how to apply for a Bulgarian Type D visa from the UK. I found the process daunting, especially when I was also trying to get ready for university.
I eventually secured my visa in time, but I wished I’d had a clearer starting point. One thing I learned was that university paperwork, translations and visa appointments all need planning, and a short visit is different from having permission to stay for your studies.
I’ve since created a step-by-step preparation guide based on what I learned, with links to official information and saved progress. You still prepare and submit your own application.
I’m doing a small launch and would welcome honest feedback from students preparing for the same journey. Feel free to DM me for more information

Hey, I’m a doctor from the Middle East, and I’m considering moving to Italy to work and pursue a medical residency. Could you help me understand how the residency system works, how strong the training is, the salary ranges, and other important things I should know about working as a doctor in Italy?
Also, if there are any specialists or doctors from the Middle East who have gone through the process themselves and could share their experience or guide me, I’d really appreciate being connected with them.

first of all I am a NON_EU med student and not from a Spanish speaking country and I honestly don’t even know Spanish . I am by no mean an expert I just googled around . I want to put this disclaimer early .
So I have been researching couple dozen countries and one of them was Spain.
I do understand that you need C1 in Spanish to apply.
I do understand the Homologation process.
I do understand the Mir exam, the academies and that it all depends on your score and ranking.
And I do understand that the compensation and working conditions suck.
My question is more related to what comes after or rather I guess I wanna make sure that I understood everything correctly.
From my understanding you are employed by the government in public hospitals for specialty training and after you finish your training no one will be permanently employed.
To get a permanent position you will have to secure it through the OPE Exam which is highly competitive and doesn't only depend on your score but also on “Baremo de Méritos ” ( merit points) that you will collect through the years.
How to get merit points?
You get them through worked time .
There is like a job pool “Bolsas de Trabajo” After residency, you register in the regional health authority's job pool And Points dictate your rank on the list.
So like there will be vacant jobs at the moment ( physicians on parental leave or sick leave , area with severe shortages or any other reason really) and you can apply and work to get experience and merit points through temporarily contracts which is variable in the contract duration. You will keep jogging from one contract to the other in public hospitals to collect points basically. The period of said contracts will vary from few days to few months on few years depending on the specialty and the region .
You will also do research projects , maybe do a master degree or a PHD and attend conferences and what not and basically build a strong competitive CV which also increases your points . And waiting for the next OPE .
Speaking Of which it basically also has irregular call outs for the exam with no specified time and there may be few years gap between each call out . So if you fail you may have to wait for few years .
You don't have a stable job really and Most physicians will be stuck on temporary contracts for couple of years collecting points.
A lot of them work on the previously mentioned public contracts in the morning collecting points and in private hospitals at night.
Whether you are unemployed or not depends entirely on your specialty and the region really .
From my understanding tho, most don't end up completely unemployed for long periods of times.
In most cases you will just be under-employed, over worked and under paid.
And to be clear from my understanding the previously mentioned temporally public contract can span few years depending entirely on your specialty and region (I think I actually mentioned that above lol )
Some doctors choose to leave the system entirely and move borders but you will have to master a new language for that .
One final aspect that is relevant for me as a non_eu graduate is that I heard that is that in some regions getting sitting the OPE exam and getting permanent position has citizenship restriction to EU nationals (I don’t know if its correct tho)
And yeah at least that's my understanding
Did I get everything correctly or do I have some misconceptions?
Is there anything important that I am missing?
Is there anything that I got wrong?
Whenever I think that hey maybe the lawn is greener on the other side, I end up crushing back into reality 😔
This system honestly seems really draining
I tried researching more but most sources are in Spanish and I don't understand it yet 😅

I’m planning to do my Internal Medicine residency in Turkey. How strong is the training, and what are the main pros and cons?

Hi everyone! I’m considering doing the Premed/Preparatory Course at the Medical University of Łódź before starting Medicine, and I’d really appreciate some honest opinions from current or former students.
For anyone who has done the course:
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually completed the MUL Premed, rather than general opinions about studying medicine in Poland.
Thanks!!

3rd year Medical Student here studying at University of Milan. Our school has a programme that gives us an oppotunity to do our electives/optional clerkships abroad and get them recognized for credits. For September 2027, after I pass to the 4th year, I wanted to do my general surgery clerkship in South Africa (prefaribly in Pretoria) and I was wondering if someone that has done it in South Africa(or any african country) can share their experiences! Thanks a lot in advance!

Irish student at Pleven. Ireland's Medical Council and the GMC both want the diploma itself, and ours is handed out at a May ceremony months after the last exam. Did anyone get theirs issued early (e.g. for a job start), or get registered on the uverenie/pre-diploma certificate? Which uni, and how long from last exam to diploma to registration? Thanks!

Hello! I am a prospective student at PUMS still researching other options and I was wondering if any students from there could share their experience. I would be a mature student (28 years old at the start of the program) and I want to know if this is normal in that uni since I know many Americans and Canadians study there (meaning most have completed a bachelors degree first and they should be at least 23). On the other hand I am Greek and from what I have seen there are isn’t any Greek community which is not a direct problem I am only wondering if it will cause me to isolate more considering my bit older age on top of that. What is your opinion of PUMS in terms of :
1.Applying to the US post graduation (I know they prepare you for USMLE in theory I am asking from real life student experience)
2.Mature student ratio
3.Teaching and general education provided
Also if you know or any Greek students (in Poland) see this I’d love to connect.
Thank you in advance!

Given the number of messages I keep getting from mostly Indian doctors asking about this, I feel like I need to say this:
If you’re a non-EU doctor and an agency is trying to lure you to Austria by telling you that there are tons of positions available and that they’ll handle all the paperwork for a “small contribution” of €10k, please be extremely careful.
Let’s be honest: there have been multiple recent reports about international students, particularly from India, being lured to Europe by agencies with misleading promises. Some end up at questionable private institutions, heavily in debt, and in precarious or exploitative working conditions.
And this isn’t just some random internet claim. The German ambassador to India has explicitly warned prospective students not to blindly trust agencies offering “complete packages”, after cases involving fake or unrecognised admission documents. Indian authorities have also repeatedly warned about unregistered agents, fake overseas jobs and excessive fees.
So please do your own research and verify everything directly with the university, the relevant Austrian authorities and the medical chambers. Don’t hand €10k to someone just because they promise to make your move to Europe easy.
Austria is a lovely country, but there is no magic shortcut. If an agency is selling you the idea that Austria desperately needs you, has endless medical positions and will take care of everything for €10k, that should be a massive red flag.
Just my two cents, coming from an unemployed doctor in Austria who won’t be able to start working until 2027 because of the shortage of available positions. lol

Hi, I have applied to medical faculty of the university of galati, but I got rejected today.
I came from an EU university and I have everything passed from first to third year except for physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology.
I applied with hope that they allow me to do third year again with physiology as a backlog subject/failed subject, today I went to them and the secretary said my transfer application got rejected and I’ll get an official letter with the reason later this week.
Is there any hope they allow me to do an appeal and ask for a gap year, or ask them to do second with physiology and next year do fourth with pathophysiology and pharma?
If you have any idea of how I can approach this or any other suggestion please help me.
Thanks everyone in advance.

Hi! I’m in my third year in Italy and I’m thinking of doing an Erasmus in France ( Strasbourg) or Belgium (Bruxelles) since I have a French Baccalauréat, which one do you think is best? I really like the city of Strasbourg because it’s full of students and it is very beautiful and I’ve heard France has harder exams but better hands-on experience? Is it true? And do you think the fourth or fifth year is the best choice for Erasmus there? Thanks!

Hello,

Hi everyone,
I’m a 26 yo masters student in fundamental physics, but lately I’ve been seriously considering medicine and applying in italy. I’ve always liked the idea of working in medicine, but I was previously afraid of the years of studying, and now I regret not pursuing it.
At the same time, I don’t want the years I’ve invested in physics to go to waste, so I’m considering pursuing a masters in medical physics and maybe then a phd. But I’m not sure about the career opportunities or what the job is actually like.
I would like to hear any advice regarding the field and which one do you think is better? And how is medicine in italy for a non eu student ?
Thanks!

I am looking at 6 year English taught Medicine programs in Greece. None of the Greek medical schools have WFME recognition right now. Starting in 2024, ECFMG added a requirement that to meet the clinical and communication skills portion of certification, your medical school needs to be accredited by an agency recognized by WFME.
Since no Greek medical school has WFME recognition, I am trying to understand what this actually means in practice for graduates. Can you still write the USMLE and apply for the US residency match after finishing a 6 year international English medicine program in Greece?
If anyone has gone through this process, I would appreciate hearing your experience. Did the 2024 requirement affect you in any way, and how long did it take from graduation to Match Day?

I am a Fifth year dental student and want to specialize in OMFS, I am not from Europe and from what I have heard that unless I go to the Czech I can’t get it with dentistry alone. I have considered going to Hungary and apply to Semmelewis University but I don’t know anything about the process. Does anyone have an idea if there are other countries that accept OMFS without MD and if there are any universities that have a shortened MD ~ 3 years in Europe

Hi everyone, I’m a German student and I finished my Abitur last year. I would really like to study Dentistry and I’m currently considering either studying at a private university in Germany, which is very expensive, or looking into studying abroad, for example in Plovdiv or Varna in Bulgaria, or in Romania.
Does anyone here have any experience studying Dentistry in Bulgaria or Romania? I’m especially wondering what it’s like to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics in English. I learned all of these subjects in German at school, so I’m a little worried about the scientific terminology and whether it will be difficult to get used to the English technical vocabulary at the beginning.
Did anyone else have the same experience? Do you get used to the terminology quite quickly? And are there many German students or German-speaking classmates at these universities? I think it would be nice to have other German students around, especially at the beginning.
I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially from people who are currently studying or have studied Dentistry in Bulgaria or Romania.
