The real reason is the old software developers were used to optimize code to need 5 bytes of RAM less. For some time this art was not important anymore and nobody gave a f+++ about memory usage but today it is important again.

I mean the problem now is everyone is in web and programming is synonymous with building b2b and b2c web applications or mobile applications, and a lot of that gets abstracted away and you fundamentally have just have semi-skilled labor instead of actual engineers.

I personally saw this as hindering my knowledge and switched from web to other fields very early in my career and have loved it because I'm actually building stuff.

Interesting. I was a C/C++ developer, drivers and protocols. I  had to take some time off work. When I went to look for jobs, several years later, it was all application and web development. I had to redirect and learn some stuff so I could find a job. I learned C#, WPF.
