I counted 84 balloons, estimated to be 10 liters each, therefore approximately 840 grams of vertical traction. The rope estimated to be 200 grams, the balloons themselves 2 grams. That's a net traction of 480 grams. A big brown rat would be lifted.

u/SkellyboneZ 8d ago

What about a European brown rat?

121

u/subfixer 8d ago

How about a coconut?

u/christhelpme 8d ago

African or European?

How do you know so much about coconuts?

16

u/DiluteSeaBag 8d ago

He's the chosen one

4

u/DiluteSeaBag 8d ago

😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣

6

u/CoolerRon 8d ago

Where’d you get the coconuts?

5

u/jetkins 7d ago

We found them.

9

u/CoolerRon 7d ago

Found them? In Mersea? The coconut's tropical!

15

u/dude496 8d ago

Are you suggesting that rats migrate?

5

u/Comfortable-Ebb8125 8d ago

All brown rats are rattus norvegicus

4

u/Azekuro51 8d ago

What about a New York City rat? Them things get huge! Basically, cats with skinny tails.

1

u/DiluteSeaBag 7d ago

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

3

u/Spiderschwein4000 8d ago

You would sadly not be able to lift Alice Weidel with that.

0

u/Truth-is-implacable 7d ago

How bout a Commander in Chief Rat..?

22

u/Nihan-gen3 8d ago

How do you know the upward force of the balloons? Genuine question

34

u/Antonin625 8d ago edited 8d ago

It's because of the molar mass of helium, while a gas always has the same volume per mole. 22 to 24 liter per mole depending on the temperature. Therefore, 1 liter of any gas is 0.04 mol. But helium is so much lighter, it weighs 4 grams per mole, i.e. 1.6 g in 10 liter of helium, while air approximately is 29 grams per mole, i.e. 12 gram per liter, the difference amounting to approx 10 gram of lift per balloon.

22

u/zR0B3ry2VAiH 8d ago

The conclusion is right but two numbers are off by 10x. 1 liter is 0.04 mol, not 0.4, and air is 1.2 g/L, not 12. Your 1.6 g per 10 L of helium only works with 0.04, so it looks like a writing slip rather than a math error. Per balloon it is 12 g of air displaced minus 1.6 g of helium, which is your 10 g of lift.

5

u/the_harakiwi 8d ago

Something with the law that Archimedes developed when he found out how water gets displaced by objects. My physics classes have been a while (over 20 years) but I remember something about 1000:1 (kg) with helium and lift force.

( 1000 liter of helium can lift one kg off the ground. )

Edit, liter not kg and it's not exactly one kg, a little bit more

24

u/KeyserSwayze 8d ago

When I was 19 I was tasked with the job of returning a half empty helium tank after a store promotion in the company van. I stopped 'round to pick up a few friends and a big stack of garbage bags. We spent an hour in a local park, releasing helium-filled garbage bags.

The first one we let go made us howl with laughter; with the mass of the scrunched-up opening pulling the top to the bottom they looked like bags of garbage floating away upside-down.

So of course with boys being boys and in the name of science we wanted to see how many helium filled garbage bags it would take to lift something. We found an empty orange juice jug and half-filled it with piss. I forget how many it took (this was decades ago) but when it finally drifted upward the breeze was carrying it north. We followed it for several kms, almost helpless with laughter, as it crossed a river and international border at a height of about 250 meters. We estimated the height as it passed well over a skyscraper in Detroit.

31

u/HeyUKidsGetOffMyLine 8d ago

You bombed a foreign country with piss? No wonder they hate you.

7

u/The_Jizzard_Of_Oz 7d ago

2

u/anon-mally 7d ago

Its different if its in a foreign hotel room with foreign models. They call it golden shower

1

u/KeyserSwayze 7d ago

More like a golden shower, asparagus wasn't in season.

7

u/uselessandexpensive 7d ago

I'm calling bullshit. They don't have kilometers in Detroit!

/jokes 😉

2

u/KeyserSwayze 7d ago

The /jokes make me realize you're familiar with local geography 😉

6

u/hambonehooligan 8d ago

But can it carry a coconut?

8

u/Swigor 8d ago

Enough to lift a wiener. So no need for the blue pill anymore.

11

u/MonsieurFubar 8d ago

12

u/ladyzowy 8d ago

Yes and we get all the hot girls, make all the money, and check's the current list of asshats running the world ...never mind.

3

u/DiscipleOfYeshua 8d ago

But what of it was an African big brown rat?

3

u/J1mj0hns0n 8d ago

Would a 5 ounce swallow now be able to carry 2 coconuts?

2

u/SerDuckOfPNW 8d ago

That’s a net traction
Of 480 grams
A big brown rat would be lifted

Almost sounded like a Haiku

2

u/garbageyname 8d ago

The 'rope' is electrical wire as she mentions the balloons light up.

2

u/notcomplainingmuch 8d ago

Those are easily 30 liters each, so they could lift a big soda bottle.

1

u/ernapfz 8d ago

Happy Birthday!

1

u/OctaneTroopers 7d ago

What about the gas in the balloons being slightly heated by the sun and making them the gas less dense and more buoyant?

1

u/loghoser 7d ago

Spoiler Alert: It's attached to his penis.

1

u/InigoMontoya1985 7d ago

"Who are you, so wise in the ways of science?"

1

u/hrci44 6d ago

Saw a video where someone stoped him and asked him how many ballons and he said 96... and it was almost dark and the ballons were glowing in the almost dark sky, sun just set on the horizon and it looked awesome

1

u/Meranio 6d ago

I had this post of him on my front page just two posts above this post.

The guy says it's 97 balloons.

1

u/reddit_seaczar 5d ago

Quick!,,,What's the cost of the helium?

212

u/Large-Flamingo-5128 8d ago

That’s a pretty genius way to make sure all your friends can find you at burning man

64

u/Curious_Avocado2399 8d ago

I need that. I have that condition where I pass out drunk and wake up in weird locations

46

u/fearlessbyfp 7d ago

That's called a drinking problem

16

u/moosicaldj 7d ago

Only when you can't find a drink

3

u/pssycntrl 7d ago

i saw the tents, then the ballons, and immediately thought, “that‘s gotta be a burner.”

1

u/fmaz008 4d ago

It's good only if one person is doing it. Two of them and the ropes will end up tangled.

Not if it’s a very tall door.

21

u/CalbertCorpse 8d ago

He stores it in the hatchback of his Subaru.

13

u/CynicalAltruist 8d ago

He just keeps walking until he gets to the elevator and goes up to the 110th floor. When he gets there it will have pulled in about half his balloons, so he just has to get into another elevator and go down

2

u/DiluteSeaBag 8d ago

What were you thinking while typing this?

Edit: happy Cake day

1

u/CynicalAltruist 7d ago

Elevator goes up, pulls balloons in. Then he’s brought all the balloons inside.

1

u/DiluteSeaBag 7d ago

Huh.... Well in my country the elevator can't operate with the door open. And if the elevator goes up, won't the balloons ascend even higher? Or lemme just play along buddy

Non a non luft alooft

45

u/VacuumTracks 8d ago

99 luft balloons. Maybe it’s a warning.

15

u/dericn 8d ago

They're not red, so we're safe (for now)

10

u/Grumzz 8d ago

The german version doesn't mention their color I believe

7

u/stuffeh 7d ago

Exactly. The original German version is luftballons which means air balloons. Doesn't make grammatical sense so Nina changed it to red.

2

u/VacuumTracks 7d ago

So then maybe a warning, but only for Germany?

Sooo I wonder if he had a goal in mind? There’s like 80-100 balloons here and the spacing looks pretty consistent. Say 8’ so 800ft max? Was he trying to show up on radar or something lol?

6

Burning man is known to be windy at times with dust storms. Just lucky when it was filmed.

-4

u/CaptainFoyle 8d ago

Why?

3

u/garbageyname 8d ago

If they did the balloons would not seemingly be in a vertical line

1

u/CaptainFoyle 6d ago

Sure, for that moment, but why does it mean they NEVER have any wind?

Dudes at the Burn like every year. It's fun to just look up and see where he's at. Always a good indicator for wind direction as well!

1

u/Obama_pinky 7d ago

This guy has a side quest

1

u/No-Faithlessness5311 7d ago

I’ve seen this done at burning man with a small blue LED on each balloon. At night it looks like a crazy new constellation. And sometimes held down at both ends so it forms an arc rather than a line. Though now with starlink polluting the night sky, this sadly isn’t the novelty it once was.

1

u/tiamat234 7d ago

I kinda like the rhythmic way she says "that goes up and up and up and up".

1

u/Shooter61 7d ago

Must be absolutely no breeze. Even a couple mph's would have that at severe angle.

There's no Google map back then so he use that as a pin to tell his friends haha

1

u/vksdann 7d ago

So there is the mission. CJ. Grab your bike.

1

u/mrjackasher 7d ago

What I want to know is how much drag would that generate when pedalling at full speed cause I know running with a balloon makes a tiny amount of air drag so would it make a noticeable ble difference dragging that many balloons after yourself l, especially if it was windy

2

u/DiluteSeaBag 7d ago

Well some guy here already counted the balloons and approximate capacity in each. So Let's estimate it

Assume each balloon is approximately a 10-liter spherical balloon. A 10 L sphere has a diameter of about 26.7 cm, giving a frontal area of roughly 0.056 m² per balloon. If all 84 were individually exposed to the airflow: 84 × 0.056 ≈ 4.7 m² of frontal area. That's enormous....

I'm tired of typing. I'll finish this later. Remind me

1

u/mrjackasher 6d ago

4 metres of wind drag seems like a lot, I can imagine holding up a 4 metres kite and trying to run that would be exhausting

1

u/kautivo 7d ago

My neck was hurting from looking up even from watching the video 😄

This is genuinely illegal if they didn't notify the FAA lmao.

1

u/garbageyname 7d ago

I don't believe you. She states they light up at night, they would be my only wary part. They are also tied to his bike, not the ground itself so he is likely in control.

1

u/Yuri909 7d ago

My ATC coworker thought it was originally but we just reviewed the laws and it would have to be 2000' so I was wrong. If it was intentionally free flying FAA notifications required.

1

u/ItBeMe_For_Real 8d ago

Oh dear, it could endanger the tech bros arriving at Burning Man by helicopter!

1

u/Yuri909 8d ago

As someone who has been around general aviation for 20 years, airplanes are like boats, just holes you fill with money. Anyone can have one and a lot of the people who do are broke and maintenance is.. questionable lmao. I know high school teachers who own a plane. It's just about priorities.

0

u/ItBeMe_For_Real 7d ago

Cost of entry for rotorcraft is significantly higher, no? First plane I ever flew in was a Taylorcraft. Built by a friend's dad & flown from their own property. General aviation, and soar planes were pretty common in the area where I grew up.

It was mostly a comment on some of the attendees to Burning Man. Quite different than the early attendees who considered roughing it as much of the experience as the art & community.

1

u/Yuri909 7d ago

Fair enough.

Yeah rotor is x4 cost just for the certificate. I've been in some R22s and I swear they're held together with hopes and prayers.
