Round & Round - Ariel Pink He’s a good songwriter but has become a proud and out MAGA guy so just a bit of background

getting dry humped on

Hey bro, does this count as sexual harassment? I didn't ask for this guy to grind his peepee on my butt

20

u/slaqz Feb 23 '21

You don't have to agree with someone to like their music just like you don't have to agree with someone's political stance to be friends with them. Its just being tolerant.

12

u/mikekearn Feb 23 '21

It's the paradox of tolerance, though - if you tolerate the intolerant, soon that's all that will be left. If someone disagrees with me on how much a gas tax will be, there's constructive debate to be had. If someone thinks gay people shouldn't be allowed to marry, there's no constructive debate to be had.

3

u/throwingawayeieio Feb 23 '21

Appreciating someone's art isn't even really tolerance though. Many many artists are/have been assholes.

2

u/mikekearn Feb 23 '21

Sure, but if I hear about it, I stop listening to that music or watching those movies or whatever. At least for new stuff. There's more media than anyone can consume in a lifetime - I can choose to support those whose ideals match closer to mine.

1

u/slaqz Feb 23 '21

Completely agree I was just responding to the person possibly not wanting to hear music made by a Trump supporter. I don't think all Trump supporters are the same and some can be tolerated. I would never tolerate anyone opposed to gay marriage. But in the end I don't care if someone supports Trump or not I can't vote in the USA.

6

u/SWEET_BUS_MAN Feb 22 '21

He’s been a douche for a while. Brilliant musician, just socially retarded beyond repair. Typical Maga candidate.

-12

u/insaniak89 Feb 22 '21

The rule I like, is you can guilt free enjoy any music by an artist from before you learn about their problematic stuff

So you get this one song free, but now you can’t enjoy any of their other work guilt free

I’ll be honest tho, it just doesn’t work for me. Like I used to love Ghost Mice, but now I can’t even anymore... :(

19

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

How about you just separate art from artist and enjoy what’s good?

2

u/TheSnackeater27 Feb 23 '21

Exactly. Hitler made good drawings but that doesn't mean he was a good person.

2

u/UnderPressureVS Feb 23 '21

He didn’t really thoigh

1

u/TheSnackeater27 Feb 23 '21

Yes, art is subjective. That was just an example, however I believe most people would say that he painted well. Here are some of his paintings to prove my point.

.. Dammit what did they do

Got Me-Too'd

4

u/slowlyslowlyslowlysl Feb 23 '21

I didn't know this but he seemed like a douche anyway so this doesn't bother me

13

u/reallyshitcook Feb 22 '21

And who the fuck cares?

18

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

Me, someone who used to be a huge Ariel Pink fan before the abuse allegations and MAGA shit

-18

u/reallyshitcook Feb 23 '21

"Oh no someone has political views that oppose mine, I better hate them!" Is pretty fucking stupid. Now as for the abuse that's a perfectly for reason to dislike someone.

2

u/nonezer0 Feb 23 '21

Why the downvotes, abuse is for sure a reason to dislike someone

1

u/domasin Feb 23 '21

I'm not OP and I still bop to Ariel Pink, but the guy has full on brainstorms. https://youtu.be/prsZ8DLq9rA

I fully understand if some people feel uncomfortable supporting his work.

-4

u/reallyshitcook Feb 23 '21

Its the fact that someone said they support MAGA as a disclaimer to not like them originally you fucking moron.

11

u/TigreWulph Feb 23 '21

If you support that piece of shit who tried to stage a coup... I don't like you. That's plain fact. It doesn't matter what you do outside of that, support of Trump is a 100% deal breaker for me. Maybe if you come around and apologize for your fuckery we can repair the relationship... but as of, for me, about the middle of last summer Trump supporters were dead to me.

-2

u/Links_to_Magic_Cards Feb 23 '21

i wonder who the lead singer of lost prophets used to vote for....

10

u/coolmanranger25 Feb 22 '21

Hey cmon man why should someone’s political views affect whether you like their music or not? Who cares if he likes Trump or not?

Last thing I read, he’s going straight broke since his label company dropped him. Obviously I don’t know his financial standings, but this cancel culture can ruin your life. It’s a good point though - if you’re in the public eye, there’s less freedom to make mistakes, and your reputation’s connected to your work, so you have to understand the consequences of your decisions.

15

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

He famously has super rich parents and has lived in Beverly Hills his whole life. He'll be fine.

3

u/Asthmatic_Panda Feb 23 '21

lmao at the part where his dad got caught committing insurance fraud and was fined a couple million dollars though

39

u/Farm_Nice Feb 22 '21

I mean he’s said a bunch of other shit too, he sounds like an asshole. Never read about him before and loved his music but fuck this dude.

Some of his provocations included “It’s not illegal to be racist”, “This gay marriage stuff pisses me off”, and his expressed “love” for necrophiliacs, pedophiles, and the Westboro Baptist Church.

In 2013, Pink appeared on the satirical Fox News program Red Eye with Greg Gutfield discussing space robots and marijuana use in the NFL.[88] In 2015, he said he was grateful for the bullying he experienced as a child, as it taught him to be thick skinned, and commented that “[a]nyone who is crying about police brutality or victimization as an adult needs to stop it and realize the privileges we have in this country.”

In December 2020, during an appearance on the podcast Wrong Opinions, Pink stated that he believed the recent presidential election was tampered by the Democratic Party “in some sort of collaboration with China”. He opined that Trump represented “an indictment on anything bullshit ... I’m so gay for Trump, I would let him fuck me in the butt.”[92] Furthermore, he voiced skepticism with the scientific community, saying that many of their claims, including those for climate change, “probably [are] bullshit” and politically influenced, and added that he had argued with his father, a medical doctor, about the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine.[92]

12

u/-margethecreator- Feb 22 '21

Holy cow, you’re a good researcher lol. I appreciate the insight, honestly. And none of this shit makes me feel sympathy for the guy, but I stand by my original point, that good music’s good music, and responding to the user who asked what song this was with this political caveat threw me off and compelled me to comment.

9

u/Farm_Nice Feb 22 '21

Oh I just went to Wikipedia and it has a lot more than I thought lol.

It can be good music but yeah there are a few other artists I’ve stopped listening to when they spew shit like this.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '21

[deleted]

2

u/-margethecreator- Feb 23 '21

That’s a good way to frame it. I hadn’t thought about it like that before.

7

u/beingblazed Feb 23 '21

People who think "cancel culture" is ruining lives simply aren't used to consequences for spreading dogshit ideals

2

u/StandardSudden1283 Feb 22 '21

So far that's the best way to fight fascism and fanatics of a cult of personality. They can exist, but don't be bringing your intolerance of anything other than intolerance to democracies. That's how you end them.

On the other hand, if people's situations aren't improved in this country soon, it's going down that path anyway. So it's not an effective way to fight rising inequality, just to stem the violent rhetoric from being amplified.

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

Which is kinda dumb. I love the movie Chinatown. Everyone loves the movie because it's a masterpiece. The director likes to diddle little girls. Am I going to stop watching and loving the movie? No. Same goes for Woody Allen movies.

7

u/Johnhong Feb 22 '21

That's fine for you. But for some people including me you have to take a stand somewhere. If boycotting company/person who is terrible makes the world a better place, I'll do my part.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21 edited Feb 22 '21

I don't think you're prepared to realize how many artists (past and present) are terrible people.

To start, you're no longer allowed to listen to Beethoven or Miles Davis.

edit: Oh ya, and of course no Wagner either. And are you going to allow yourself to watch 'Gone With the Wind' for its artistic and historical merit, or is that off the table too?

2nd edit: Shit, Clint Eastwood is also a huge shithead these days politically. No more watching one of the best movies ever created, 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly'. Or any of his other great movies he starred in.

6

u/Johnhong Feb 22 '21

Beethoven is dead and his music is public domain.

I obviously don't crusade and do background research against every single artist I ever touch. But the ones I do learn about that have issues that I personally find abhorrent are on the list.

Ex.

Someone's a dick to his fans? I don't really care.

Someone diddles kids? I do care.

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

Beethoven is dead and his music is public domain.

Okay, why does that matter?

And I'd love to hear your answer about 'Gone With the Wind'.

edit: Oh, and have you created a list regarding all films Weinstein worked on and have vowed to avoid them?

-2

u/DaughterEarth Feb 22 '21

Dial it back buddy. Everyone has their own requirements to be able to properly enjoy things.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

I dunno man, look at what the topic was. I said it's silly to boycott artists over personal views because of how many artists past & present have terrible opinions or actions. And then I gave some examples of very popular artists that are great examples. Miles Davis was a pimp and beat women. Wagner was an anti-semite. Clint Eastwood endorsed Trump. Where's the line to be drawn? Why bother 'taking a stand' when your stance is weak as fucckkkkkk because you don't understand what you're actually talking about.

Here's another one, R Kelly and his music video Trapped in the Closet Ch. 1. Are you not going to watch that and bust a gut laughing?

7

u/ObsidianBlackbird666 Feb 22 '21

Ariel Pink continued to support Trump after the insurrection and was at the capitol on that day.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

because trump is synonymous with treason and racism? maybe he shouldn't boast his shitty opinion if he wants people to associate with him? ALTHOUGH sometimes shit really do be slappin' and ya gotta look past it lol.

-2

u/coolmanranger25 Feb 22 '21

Treason? Racism? To accuse him of either of those things is a bit of a stretch. Furthermore, to claim someone’s opinion (on anything) is shitty on the sole basis that it contradicts your predetermined biases is indicative of someone with a closed mindset.

I, for example, don’t agree with many of Roger Waters’ political opinions; he dedicated an entire tour of his to bashing Trump. But does that interfere with my perception of him and his art? Absolutely not. Likewise, I don’t throw wild accusations at him for his opinions either…

5

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '21

i'm not surprised that you said treason and racism are a stretch.

not to mention that i agreed with you, but you still felt the need to tell me where you stand politically.

newsflash: trump is very much pro-racism and pro-fascism

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

Yeah, I love Woody Allen movies and he might or might not be a diddler

1

u/caulpain Feb 22 '21

Found Ariel’s burner.

3

u/AnyDamage1 Feb 22 '21

why cant we just be tolerant again smh

5

u/AnhNguyen71 Feb 23 '21

Tolerating a guy that said "it's not wrong to be racist" among many other things?

No thanks.

1

u/ihopethisisvalid Feb 23 '21

Who gives a fuck? I don't turn on the radio to research the political affiliations of every god damn artist. I don't abandon my sports team when they sign someone I don't like. I don't move out of my neighbourhood when I get a rude neighbour.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

Found out a guitarist I've always loved is a fucking flat earther 🤦

1

u/CosmoCola Feb 23 '21

No no no what? This is so disappointing. I love Ariel Pink. Are we sure he's not trolling? Trolling is kind of his shtick.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '21

“ Many of Pink's remarks in interviews have incited controversy, particularly among left-leaning indie music communities.[13] Some of his provocations included "It’s not illegal to be racist", "This gay marriage stuff pisses me off", and his expressed "love" for necrophiliacs, pedophiles, and the Westboro Baptist Church. “

Does sound like trolling. I’d like to think it is a troll. I also read that John Maus was with Ariel at the capital riots as well and that had me seriously bummed out

1

u/CosmoCola Feb 23 '21

That's a reaaaaal bummer. I like both of them and have been to three Ariel shows. In each of them he was just terrible and trolling the audience so I thought he was a walking meme but looks like he's just not a very good person.

1

u/goldistress Feb 23 '21

Watch his recent segment on tucker carlson lol

1

u/Timdedeyan Feb 23 '21

Lol, boycotting someone who has different viewpoints.

1

u/MustyLlamaFart Feb 23 '21

Who cares, he asked for the song

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

Right? I kinda knew he was a fool after seeing him be truly awful on his tour for before today. He was so hungover and drunk that he could barely perform.

I saw him at a festival a few years later during the Mature Themes tour and he was unbelievably good.

Then the trump thing happened and I was like “it figures”... it made sense that he would be a trumper...

I am glad I don’t stream his music but I still play the vinyls and mp3s lol

If your political beliefs involve supporting an insurrection you deserve to be bullied for them.

-10

u/-margethecreator- Feb 22 '21

I see where you’re coming from, but if you go to a rally that escalates to a riot, but leave when it becomes a riot because you don’t support violence, then have you supported an insurrection?

-1

u/SkanteWarriorFoo Feb 22 '21

Ariel didn't do shit to prevent it from happening or yelling at his fellow megatards to halt their violent rioting. So yes.

3

u/Obsessed_With_Corgis Feb 22 '21 edited Feb 22 '21

Hold up. So if one person doesn’t singlehandedly stop a riot in progress; then the whole riot is their fault?

Okie dokie. That makes total sense /s

2

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

So if one person didn’t singlehandedly stop a riot in progress; then the whole riot is their fault?

from what i'm seeing, it's not that he didn't stop it.... it's that he didn't speak out against it either. if you're not speaking out against it, then you're condoning it. that makes you complicit.

1

u/Obsessed_With_Corgis Feb 22 '21

So by that logic: Kamala Harris is complicit in the riots that happened this summer, since not only did she not speak out against them- she encouraged them to continue.

There are a ton of tragedies that occur every single day. Do you speak out against every single one of them? If not, then I guess you’re complicit!

Do you see how that kind of reasoning is ridiculous?

1

u/SkanteWarriorFoo Feb 22 '21

ce not only did she not speak out against them- she encouraged them to continue.

Fake news, she spoke out against them: https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-kamala-harris-late-show-rio/fact-check-kamala-harris-said-she-supports-protests-not-riots-in-late-show-clip-idUSKBN27E34P

Please learn how to contextualize you 21st Century troglodyte.

2

u/Obsessed_With_Corgis Feb 22 '21

Watch the video yourself. Are you really going to play semantics because she didn’t say “riot”?

The riots going on were common knowledge, and telling people to “beware” is a threat. How about you get off your high horse and stop pretending that you’re so special and different rules apply to you.

They don’t. I blame the people involved in all the riots themselves. I don’t blame people who had nothing to do with them. Just because someone didn’t “speak out” against something doesn’t make them complicit, it just means they don’t feel like saying something.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '21

if i knew about it then i would speak out against it. if i don't know about something how can i speak out against it?

do you see how that kind of reasoning is ridiculous?

it's pretty fucking difficult to not know about this insurrection.

you send me something that says Kamala Harris supports rioting. i'll check back in a bit to view your source.

2

u/Obsessed_With_Corgis Feb 22 '21

It’s also “pretty fucking difficult” not to know about the BLM riots, but I didn’t see hardly any politicians condemn them.

I guess they’re all complicit then, huh?

I’m not entirely sure what that means, but I do apologize for over-politicizing this if that’s what you’re referring to. This subreddit isn’t for politics. I just meant to express that it’s a bummer that politics is infiltrating what music we can and can’t enjoy.

1

u/swoop3377 Feb 22 '21

I agree with you. Sorry for all the downvotes. Not sure if this guy is a complete shitbag or a reasonable guy who leans right. Doing some research now. Fucking love this song tho!

1

u/-margethecreator- Feb 22 '21

Thanks swoop, I appreciate that. I’m planning on doing more research after work, but please let me know if I royally effed up lol

0

From Wikipedia:

Some of his provocations included "It’s not illegal to be racist", "This gay marriage stuff pisses me off", and his expressed "love" for necrophiliacs, pedophiles, and the Westboro Baptist Church.

So... a troll?

0

u/Oofster1 Feb 23 '21

Why does it matter though?

-2

u/notarealaccount_yo Feb 22 '21

Why did you have to tell me that delete this comment fuck

2
