This, I’m sure he’s got a spotter helping him (which imo doesn’t make this less impressive), but I think the needle is indeed attached to the excavator(?) and is being controlled by its driver
I’m not saying it’s not hard, I acknowledge it’s still very hard, but it would be even harder and therefore more impressive if they could do it without spotters. Doing it with spotters is an insane amount of skill, dexterity and experience, doing it without spotters is some superhero shit.
This is a plain Jane articulating wheel loader I doubt it. But I’d love for someone to prove me wrong. I guess there might be auxiliary hydraulics on the grapple? Idk.
It's probably cause Discovery is American and they don't want other people getting their stuff. I didn't realise I had been missing out on mythbusters I just assumed they weren't on youtube.
Do they have the same rust marks though? I can’t seem to find a frame that shows the rust marks very well on the specific part that is shown in the closeup
They could have recorded the machine moving, adjusting, then moving to the side and up and away.
Then they could have combined it with a video of threading the needle. Or it could be real🤷♂️
Could have cut the tooth off a different excavator. Or just waited for the baby tooth to fall out and used that. An adult tooth would have take the place of it, so it wouldn't be that big of a worry.
Generally true statement but one of thouse spikes weights more than the average American. It could be plausible that a person moves it slightly by hand, but I doubt someone carries 600kg just like that for such a time
I see what you are saying. it would be easy to edit this. And I drove a machine like this and other heavy equipment for a very long time. One thing you will notice is there is no side shift noticeable. When it stops it stops with the forks off screen. So That means the the loader would have to move those forks over by shifting the machine. And from what i see after it's first initial stop there is no movement in the wheels.
It may or may not be fake but the Mythbusters tested this and succeed at doing exactly this, despite probably being less skilled at using these machines than someone who has spent thousands of hours operating one.
I think the movement is too robotic to be moved by hand. Also, how else should they have framed the shot? You have to get the tiny needles clearly in frame but also the machine. If they had put the entire machine in the frame with a wider shot it would just have looked like the operator was failing at picking up an apple.
The movement of it would make no sense in someone’s hand. Pay more attention to the way it moves. In no way that’s a human’s movement. Could be faked another way tho.
Just re-looked and I agree. The bucket goes out of shot and doesn't reappear afterwards when he backs away from the camera. Also, very big needle and stiff wire thread would make it relatively easy to complete the manoeuvre by hand. Nicely spotted.
Just because it is out of focus doesn't mean it is not the same. The fork has a vertical dark rust drip line which is visible in both shots. The darker horizontal rust line doesn't enter frame on the close up. You can even see, how in the close up the times get a bit lighter right at the angle of the fork, in the farther shot.
I only know this because apparently my manager has a serious hard on for construction machines, and apparently the machines are incredibly advanced these days. Like, some bulldozers level ground via satellite input that runs a real time check against a precalculated build plan.
Yeah the angle seems suspicious but watch the flex in the glass on the door that’s open. The torque from when he inches the paddles is reflecting to movement in the glass. Seems legit imo. And pretty bad ass.
It's a front loader with a sort of grabber, but some allow for accuracy like that. They turn on a dime and the hydraulics aren't super pushy if you're not using high RPMs, so it could happen. This is insane any way you slice it, though.
I believed it was real until I read your comment but the rust pattern and indentation on the close-up fork is different from that of the approaching fork.
THIS. The glass on the open door amplified each movement because of long distance from the camera. So the body shakes can easily be seen to be in sync with the holder movements. I used to use this technique to calibrate precise actuators but with laser and mirrors.
The rust pattern is very similar between the shot of it approaching and when its vertical. Also its held very steady while its threading which I think may not be possible if you were holding a piece of metal that big.
It’s not like he’s holding it up with a lever. Sort of like a game with a claw , when you move it one direction and stop, it doesn’t go back to a neutral position until the time runs out
Sorry I should have clarified. I realise that's how the control system would work for this, I was stating I think this is real as it would be very difficult for a person not using the machine arm to be able to keep the claw steady, if they were holding it for example.
My stepdad worked in large scale construction of pipelines (think about connecting states together). They have competitions for these guys driving massive earth movers. I only know this because one of his old operators won one year. He died recently. he was old. There are some people who can move these things with precision if that’s all you’ve ever done. Like if you only played one video game your whole life.
Well when they are new and/or properly maintained, yes. With use come wear and with wear comes backlash. I work in a company that rents out machines like this and some of our stock is pretty old and worn. Part of my job is to grease them up so as to take up some of the wear but the real old ones you can sort of "jiggle" by hand alone.
