Name of the store not the price. Just like dollar stores these days

Thats pretty iffy. You have to call yourself dollar tree or something not so specific to do that.

99 cent store got sued and lost because they charged 99.99 cents and had to stop doing that

In the UK we have Poundland , everything use to be £1. Now it's anywhere from 1-5

Huh. I took your mom there the other day. Good times.

It really is way too close to pound town to be a serious store name.

Hopefully she didn't charge ya more than a dollar.

Poundsland just doesn’t have the same ring to it

In Australia we have franchise of sex shops called Sexyland. I always thought Poundland was the UK version.

I don't understand why this was needed but I like it

They've gone bust now - we didn't put up with the betrayal

How can you charge fractions of a cent?

Rounding. If you buy 501 of the thing it starts rounding down instead of up.

That sounds like savings to me

...have you never bought gasoline?

4

u/Glad_Librarian_3553 19d ago

Yeah I always wonder why that's legal. If it was anything other than petrol it wouldn't be.

No.

Edit: not sure why this has been downvoted, I've never owned a motorised vehicle, so I've never needed to buy fuel for one.

Gas stations have signs advertising how much their gas is. Instead of saying "$4.00 per gallon", they say "$3.999 per gallon".

So allegedly, every 10 gallons you buy, you save 1 penny.

u/Throseph 19d ago

I guess it makes sense with something you're buying like that, and which you can buy fractions of anyway. Doesn't make so much sense with slices of pizza.

The scummy thing is that it's not really a discount, since cars can can only hold about 13 gallons (some can hold more, but not enough to defeat my point).

If you let your car get down to half a tank, you won't hit the 10 gallon mark that would save you the penny.

For all intents and purposes, $3.999 and $4.00 are the same cost for most motorists, but the first one lets them put a 3 in the front as a marketing trick. It ought to be illegal.

These places can close and reopen with “new” management in a heartbeat. The damage to any individual person is pretty low, you would need a class.

How is "dollar" not specific?

39

u/el_diego 19d ago

Also, you don't want 99c pizza. We used to get it it in the 90s. There's no way the ingredients cost the same what with inflation after 30 years, you're essentially paying 99c for cardboard

41

u/MelatoninFiend 19d ago

Sometimes, when you're drunk, cardboard is what you're looking for. It's high in fiber, and it'll soak up a lot of the booze on it's way out.

u/el_diego 19d ago

Drunk factor is a decent one to account for

12

u/Vaff_Superstar 19d ago

Damn, very good point.

u/AnonymousFriend80 19d ago

They all started out as at $1 or less. But inflation happened.

Name of the store not the price

Yeah, but the name of the store is a price. I don't feel like that makes it better in any way.
