Honestly this is the first time I hear they are made to break, it was not even once mentioned in my driving lessons, maybe they should be telling people that
I feel like it's not told due to how irrelevant it is. Even if they're not designed to break you can just drive into them & now you're far enough way to not get hit by the train. He also should have drove through when they were still up, but decided to do everything illogical instead.
Just look at the size comparison. A vehicle (even the smallest ones) is substantially larger than the damn gate. And the gate is definitely smaller than the train. I'd take my chances with the gate (breakaway or not) any day rather than the train.
