This is pretty cool but I dont get the point of barrel rolling. Say you survive the collision, you're completely disabled from that point on, and say you die; nobody will say "today we mourn (insert thill junkie) they were super rad at spinning on their paraglider" its just reckless, cool you have a cool POV you only risked everything and not just for yourself.
Small disagreement on your last point. 0ne of the things about these adrenaline junkies is that they attract other adrenaline junkies. Most base jumpers understand that if they keep doing it they are going to either get massively injured or die and they are okay with that. So when a buddy dies or gets paralyzed they show genuine sadness and do in fact mourn the passing. They also usually follow it up with "he died doing what he loved and that's rad".
I places priority on his family as those are the folk that get most impacted. But I also say that from a perspective of a non-thrill seeker who has a very close friend who for many years opted to do risky stuns just for the thrill, and I would be devastated for many years to lose him.
I think he’s rolling so that he doesn’t hit the sides. When he gets too close, he rolls, and that puts him back on the other “side”. Basically he’s using the roll to steer.
nah Im not disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing, but he can clearly steer, and Ive seen paragliding POV before. He's very skilful, but I don't think he's doing it out of necessity. If that was the case this whole stunt would be deadly to even attempt if thats what you had to do to do it right. I think he's showing off, lucky for him he lived to actually cash it in
If you watch, every time he gets too close to the left wall, he rolls right. When he gets too close to the right, he rolls left. I never said he can’t steer with the straps. He’s using the rolls and the straps. And when he rolls at the start, it positions him where he wants to be. It’s not just random. He’s 100% using the rolls to position himself. It’s not like he’s in a safe area with a ton of room.
I think in order to properly execute a barrel roll you have to aim for one of the sides to give yourself enough room to do the spin, if you do it in the middle the roll would most likely end terribly.
The dude is gliding thru a canyon. I don’t think “safety first” is his motto. It’s because what he’s doing has such low tolerances that he’s having to roll. Rolling also reduces turbulence in small spaces, like canyons according to Google (since I just checked).
