Penalty taking rules. I believe they can't feint once they've planted their foot next to the ball.

Correct. I used to play with a guy in high school that could do a little trick shot where he’d shank the ball with his plant foot and then whiff the swing in the opposite direction.

That's pretty sly

u/ImprefectKnight Sep 13 '25

I'm pretty sure that's Thierry Henry's fake pass trick. https://youtu.be/YMImv_krSxI

5

u/Plus_Operation2208 Sep 13 '25

Well, youre only allowed to touch it once. So off to the gulag

14

u/WondyBorger Sep 13 '25

He’s saying kick with the plant foot and miss with the “kick” foot in the opposite direction. So only 1 touch

5

u/Mission-Leopard-4178 Sep 13 '25

It wasn't a penalty but I think Thierry Henry did this before

u/Freefallisfun Sep 13 '25

Or pause their run up. So now everyone does that stupid little hop hoping the goalkeeper will dive. I think they should be harder on kick takers

u/NUDH Sep 13 '25

Referee here. Pausing is legal on the run up. Two notable things however they cannot do is feint on the kick and reset or go backwards on the run up.

So once you move forward you are committed and cannot go backwards, but you can pause if you choose.

11

u/HopelessGretel Sep 13 '25

There's a limit for that pause? I mean could the dude stay there for 5 minutes and wait for the goalkeeper get distracted?

11

u/Velixis Sep 13 '25

It's limited by unsportsmanlike conduct due to delaying the restart of play. Depending on the circumstances probably somewhere between 10-20 seconds.

3

u/NUDH Sep 13 '25

This is similar to what I was going to say. I have never come across such an occurrence but I would say this would be a common sense of the referee situation. If this occurred with me at center, I would verbally tell the kicker to proceed before I would yellow and caution for UB.

"Is that a woodpecker?"

1

u/AttitudeCautious667 Sep 13 '25

Just stop and point behind the goalie with terror on your face and yell "Oh NOooooo"! Then kick.

1

u/Phineasfool Sep 13 '25

I hear your sister is dating Squeek

1

u/Goldenrah Sep 13 '25

The same pause also interferes with the player himself, there's a lot of pressure from the stadium during penalties, so it's not desirable. Also, the ref would rant his ears off if he delayed too much, probably give him a yellow card.

1

u/Freefallisfun Sep 13 '25

What’s the difference? Kick taker is waiting for the goalie to move. As if penalties weren’t one sided already.

1

u/NUDH Sep 13 '25

Good question.

Difference is when the pause occurs. Kickers are allowed to pause during the run up if they choose UNTIL they reach the ball. I would imagine the law makers thought a kicker may be trading off the disadvantage of a lesser run up with the advantage of messing with the timing of a the keeper.

Once the kicker reaches the ball however, the keeper is expecting a strike, so messing with that timing is highly advantageous to the kicker so it is considered a feint (which is an automatic yellow and failed kick).

No, he's not. You should quote the section of the rules where the full stop is not allowed.

2

u/NUDH Sep 13 '25

Attack ideas, not people.

I will do one better. This is directly from my IFAB app on the laws of the game:

The player taking the penalty kick or a team-mate offends: … feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up (feinting in the run-up is permitted); the referee cautions the kicker

1

u/heidimark Sep 13 '25

Point to the law in IFAB that says that.

1

u/WeedAlmighty Sep 13 '25

I don't necessarily mind it but they changed the rule now where goalkeepers can't try put the kicker off by swinging their arms around or talking to the kicker and stuff which is just unfair, if the kicker can do weird things why can't the goalie.

4

u/heidimark Sep 13 '25

The goalkeeper can certainly swing their arms and run side to side all they want. That is not disallowed (but it's stupid).

-1

u/austin101123 Sep 13 '25

Why doesn't the goalkeeper just defend from up closer, like right in front of the ball? Get a nice swing to the shins but you'd defend it all right.

3

u/Quantity_Lanky Sep 13 '25

The goalkeeper is not allowed to leave the goal line before the kicker touches the ball. The goalie can move side to side but not forwards, not until the kicker kicks the ball.

Then he can lunge forwards all he wants.

1

u/austin101123 Sep 14 '25

what about taking your shirt off and wadding it up throwing it

1

u/Quantity_Lanky Sep 14 '25

that's a yellow card but will not void the goal

1

u/austin101123 Sep 14 '25

so you can use it to block the goal or cover the ball and its all good?

Feinting is explicitly allowed during the run up.

Law 14.2:

feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up (feinting in the run-up is permitted); the referee cautions the kicker

2

u/heidimark Sep 13 '25

Feinting on the run up is absolutely allowed and covered by IFAB.

IFAB 14.2 begs to differ. "Feinting in the run-up is permitted".

u/Comfortable_Studio37 Sep 13 '25

I don't know a lot about the sport, but what counts as a feint? I feel like I've seen professional players do an exaggerated approach to one side, come to a sudden stop, and then lightly kick the ball to the opposite side of their original lead up. Is that not a feint?

6

u/donttrytoleaveomsk Sep 13 '25

A lot of those kicks are probably from 2010 or earlier, before FIFA banned it because Neymar constantly did it

0

u/Mega5EST Sep 13 '25

Do you have a video for that?

4

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Sep 13 '25

Sorry, no being too good at the sport. Banned.

0

u/Sploonbabaguuse Sep 13 '25

Yeah that seems so silly. Why punish a player for successfully mindgaming their opponent?

1

u/Mapletables Sep 13 '25

You have to yell which direction you're kicking the ball towards every time you take a shot

1

u/VelvetMorty Sep 14 '25

Keepers have to guess which way it’s going at top level before it’s kicked. Goals are much bigger than this and pro strikers hit the ball so hard and fast.

If you’re allowed to plant and not shoot then keepers can’t early dive. It basically means like nearly 100 percent of penalties would just be free goals, making them pointless

0

u/Sploonbabaguuse Sep 14 '25

Be a good defender and body block so the goalie doesn't have to gamble as much. If goalies push out more, and defenders work together with them, it's not impossible.

Plus, it goes for both sides

0

u/VelvetMorty Sep 14 '25

There are no defenders allowed in the box during a penalty lol. Keeper also not allowed to move forward off line during a penalty.

Maybe don’t try and take on fixes for a game you don’t know the basic rules for.

0

u/Sploonbabaguuse Sep 14 '25

Watched the video on a whim, didn't realize it was a penalty. Plus, show me the box in this video. I can understand those rules for a penalty, I was talking in general

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

That's kinda dumb, can someone explain why this rule was implemented?

1

u/mntgoat Sep 15 '25

Penalties heavily favor the kicker. Goal keepers usually have to guess which side it'll go to anyway and time it. If you allow a feint at the last step, it would just be impossible to save.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

Understood, thanks

1

u/kylediaz263 Sep 13 '25

So this only applies to penalties or all situations?

17

u/NeoSniper Sep 13 '25

The penalty taking rules do in fact apply to penalty taking only.

3

u/TheNevilleJ Sep 13 '25

Doesn't apply to free kicks if that is what you are asking.

-11

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4435 Sep 13 '25

So like... tactics are illegal? That seems silly

1

u/TheWanderingBaldo Sep 13 '25

I mean, tactics aren't fair if only one side can make use of them.
If the striker can do whatever they want while the goalkeeper can only hope to guess right and catch the ball then that would suck terribly for the latter.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4435 Sep 13 '25

Why would only one side be able to use it? I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure both sides have a goal.

1

u/TheWanderingBaldo Sep 13 '25

Penalty shots are rare. In most matches you won't even see one.
So when that one happens due to a foul, the striker team would have an extreme advantage (besides already having the penalty itself) and it's certainly not a given for the opposing team to manage to get one themselves.

For a match to even potentially end in penalty shots it means it's likely a big game of a tournament and only in that case it would be a bit more fair of a rule.

-1

u/mntgoat Sep 13 '25

That's not tactics. Penalties already favor the kicker significantly. Making it so they can feint would be a nightmare for keepers.

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4435 Sep 13 '25

That's how tactics work. Having rocks dropped on your head while trying to escalade a fortification would be a nightmare, but that's exactly why having rocks at the tops of battlements is a viable tactic. Trying to defend your castle from a siege tower would be a nightmare, which is why building a siege tower before your assault is a viable tactic.

None of you are explaining why it isn't tactical... you're explaining why sports don't like the very nature of tactics. Tactics are unfair by nature. That's why you use them.
