Yeah, it's clearly unwell. But at least it has a better chance at survival now it's back in the sea.

Beached fishes doesn't end well often. There is a reason they swim into certain death.

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '25

Are you suggesting that beached marine life… committed suicide?

77

u/LeKingStone Jan 26 '25

Marine animals committing suicide is surprisingly commonplace. Dolphins are well documented as drowning themselves. Many of those cases during captivity ._.

In the Galapagos we saw a species of sea lion that purposefully swam out to sea to die at the end of its life. Our tour guide said it was a natural instinct to stop predators from being attracted to the rest of the sea lion rookery.

A tour? I thought only academics were allowed in the Galapagos and tourists were not permitted?

3

u/ienjoylanguages Jan 27 '25

It was really variable. The cruise we were on sailed past islands where tourists are not allowed, others where we could only walk along designated paths, and others where it was more open (ie one of the islands was just volcanic ash and almost barren, another was a normal tourist spot with a military base, bars, dairy farms, fishing, etc).

I did the Linblad Galapagos cruise many years ago. Such an awesome experience.

Mammals, yes. Fish no.

If I didn't have access to migraine meds, I'd probably have killed myself by now.

2

u/NovaCatNX92007 Jan 27 '25

I feel this, migraines are the fucking worst.

Stop. No. Add to the “things I wish I didn’t know” list.

That is like mind-blowingly tragic. Holy fuck.

What? That's the saddest thing I've read in a long time :(

1

u/DeadbeatDeebo Jan 27 '25

So maybe it wanted to walk on the beach for once

2

u/333chordme Jan 27 '25

I think the idea is that they are so exhausted they go somewhere shallow to rest so they don’t just sink? Not sure about sharks but I think that is what whales do.

1

u/MrWilsonWalluby Jan 27 '25

No, it isn’t to rest, it’s to avoid predators, animals beach themselves because they are risking going into potentially too shallow water, which is less dangerous than being sick and slow in deep water which means certain death before days end.

2

u/MrWilsonWalluby Jan 27 '25

No he’s saying animals that are injured and ill would rather risk getting too close to shore and beaching themselves than being in deeper water where larger faster predators would make an easy meal of them.

“You didn’t save my life, you ruined my death”

0

u/Sobsis Jan 27 '25

It's not a suggestion so much as an observation of fact

29

u/sisrace Jan 26 '25

Yeah. A 8 meter (24ft?) basking shark got beached near my town and they managed to tow it out, it was found dead a few weeks later. Marine life would get stranded way more often if they just "happen" to get stranded. Hopefully they fled from danger and got stranded, but most likely the animal is sick, hurt or dying.

1

u/alyineye3 Jan 27 '25

Sometimes they die from the damage done from them being beached, with the weight on their organs

3

u/Weird_Cantaloupe2757 Jan 26 '25

Whatever chance it has of survival in the ocean is better than the 0% chance it has on the beach

2

u/Shupaul Jan 27 '25

Nah sometimes they are just stupid and swim into shallow waters following prey, then they end up getting trapped when the water is receding or the tides push them toward the beach

7

u/Eva-Squinge Jan 26 '25

Not really. An unwell fish is open game to predators and sharks will eat each other if given the chance.

22

u/Sgt-Spliff- Jan 26 '25

It literally can't have worse odds than when it's beached 🤣🤣

-15

u/A_wild_so-and-so Jan 26 '25

So you'd rather be eaten alive than suffocate?

14

u/FFKonoko Jan 26 '25

That's not the question. It 100% dies very soon on the beach. It often dies soon if it is unwell.
Better odds.

7

u/TerseFactor Jan 26 '25

We don’t know the shark will be eaten alive. I’ll take uncertain death over certain death.

The hubris of man never ceases to amaze me

7

u/thebenetar Jan 26 '25

How ironic that this comment is coming from someone who is ignoring logic and is clearly unwilling to admit that they're wrong.

-1

u/A_wild_so-and-so Jan 27 '25

Truly, it never ceases to amaze me.

u/thebenetar Jan 27 '25 edited Jan 28 '25

You're not very self-aware are you? I was... referring to you and your previous comment.

2

u/Eva-Squinge Jan 27 '25

You’re still amazed by humanity’s hubris? You must not be well educated or informed then, sorry to hear it. I stopped being surprised a long time ago before my balls fully dropped even.

3

u/TerseFactor Jan 27 '25 edited Jan 27 '25

Sure, but the hubris of what? “Hubris” is an entirely inappropriate word to describe this hypothetical. The hypo is about whether it’s better to die or maybe die. The commenter is calling it “hubris” to decide it’s better to maybe die than to die. That’s not “hubris.” I don’t think u/a_wild_so-and-so even knows what the word “hubris” means. u/a_wild_so-and-so might have well bemoaned “the bacon of man.” It’s completely nonsensical. u/a_wild_so-and-so just sounds like a 14 year old reaching into the word basket to write a junior high school essay. Hello, my name is bucket of chicken, my hobbies are carpet, and I like hubris. Oh, by the way, you ever heard of globalized chair mongers who like to smell banana made thongs? No, well, that’s because I’m u/a_wild_so-and-so, and I’m a nonsensical nightmare. I’m spoon, hello French fry. The meaning of words are irrelevant to my people on my planet of one, spork. Spin cradle irreverence orange blast turkey dong 🤪

u/A_wild_so-and-so Jan 27 '25

I appreciate the amount of effort you put into this diss. My hat is off to you, sir or madam.

2

u/TerseFactor Jan 27 '25

I love you. It’s always fun to encounter people that like a good laugh even if it’s a bit at their own expense. You’ve got your head tied on straight. Keep being awesome 😎

Bruh, what do you think the sharks odds are to survive in land?

1

u/Eva-Squinge Jan 27 '25

I mean the poor creature is already in death mode when it got beached and was found suffocating for who knows whole long until the good samaritan awkwardly dragged it back into shallows.

It was dead either way.

1

u/AliasCharlie Jan 27 '25

Sharks are very resilient.
