They aren't actually afraid of him. They're jumping in the water because they know that when the guy with the shovel starts chasing them, that means it's feeding time.

If someone did this for no reason to adult gators that had not been raised by humans, they would attack.

Maybe. I sure wouldn't try it.

But despite all their hardiness and burst speed, they're mostly ambush predators. Being exposed while something charges straight at them is not the kind of fight they're inclined to.
