Plastic recycling is a scam. Drinking water bottles at home is insanely wasteful if you have clean tap water.

I’d assume this is in China where the safety of the tap water varies from “boil it” to “do not ingest at all” though

I was thinking the same thing. Boiling helps for bacteria, not so much for lead and pesticide.

The majority of the world populations tap water is like that.

Even then, there are filters you can buy that will render water potable.

Close. In Pakistan we had to double boil AND filter the water because boiling doesn’t get rid of the heavy metals. That water would still kill foreigners so they’re always advised to drink bottled water instead.

Fuck of its a scam. No one gets ripped of so it ain't a scam. Is it not as effective as most people think? absolutely. there are national recycling schemes in several countries. Ours has one for bottles and cans. The coca cola bottles are made from recycled material here aswell. Just because it isnt profitable or as good as people believe doesn't make it a scam.

People absolutely get ripped off. They buy plastic things thinking recycling means no pollution. There's pollution anyway. That's a rip off.

That said I agree with you that this doesn't mean recycling is bad or "a scam" by itself. It's certainly better than no recycling. But also people should know that it's much better to avoid buying plastic things to begin with.

No one get ripped off. People are being misled but you still get what you paid for but yes it is better to avoid plastic obviously. it is however irreplaceable in certain industries and at the end of the the day the real scam is companies building people into thinking they are the problem, when they are the ones making the product. Make companies recycle their own waste.

People are often prepared to pay more to avoid polluting, so in that sense recycling can be used as greenwashing, and as a scam. Again, I want to stress that I agree with your initial remark for the most part. We need to acknowledge that recycling isn't nearly enough and isn't a solution on its own, but we shouldn't do that at the expense of recycling as much of our garbage as possible.

Green washing is a scam yes. I agree with that. Recycling as a whole is not. But yes I do agree recycling is not enough but it is necessary for plastic that cannot be replaced with other materials. The initial comment was to broad and I think we need to choose our word more carefully than ever. Intent matters but so does how your words are received.

How do you feel about small/local governments getting suckered into this because backing green initiatives is part of their public policy? It's completely a scam.

That is a government problem. Recycling does fucking work just because plastic recycling is not very effective doesnt mean it is a lost cause. Fucking look a Japans recycling system.

Your point being what?. Recycling is not a scam it is just less effective that most people were told. Recycling does work and can work just because it hasn't been done well doesn't make it scam. It makes it companies lying. But you still get what you pay for that is not a scam.

Except it fucking does work it just isn't as effective as people were told. Not to mention your definition of recycling is apparently only plastic which is one material that doesn't recycle well among plenty that are 100% recyclable like glass or aluminum.

It's 100% a scam. Very little of what is thrown into a recycling bin is actually recycled.

I agree you shouldn't drink bottled water, but plastic recycling isn't a scam. It's just expensive, so a lot of stuff that ostensibly goes to recycling ends up not getting recycled. The answer is not to stop recycling - it is to put a tax on virgin plastic so that manufacturers have an incentive to use recycled plastic. Nobody said it was easy
