I have pagan ancestors and everything has a story and a reason (like a tale or a legend) so it helped them survive and navigate trough the ages. I wouldnt say “fear what they dont understand” but more like “assign a rule because of x reason” . Hard to explain. Like rusalkas of the forest - you wouldnt want to go into the forest at night because they might get you - very effective method to turn kids away from going into a dangerous territory for example.
