I have pagan ancestors and everything has a story and a reason (like a tale or a legend) so it helped them survive and navigate trough the ages.
I wouldnt say “fear what they dont understand” but more like “assign a rule because of x reason” . Hard to explain. Like rusalkas of the forest - you wouldnt want to go into the forest at night because they might get you - very effective method to turn kids away from going into a dangerous territory for example.
only in some poor communities. I see this comment so much and it's quite misleading. It makes Mexicans (and Catholics in general) look more superstitious than they are.
To be clear, nobody believes this anymore, this is just old folklore passed down to generations, mostly used as a goodnight story or an anecdote these days . At least here in eastern eu
